Mercure Fukuoka Munakata Resort & Spa

I originally booked this hotel by mistake but was pleasantly surprised by some aspects of my stay. Tthe location was quite far from Fukuoka, where I had intended to stay for a concert. I arrived at the hotel around 11:30 AM–12 PM after an early morning flight, unaware that check-in wasn’t until 3 PM. When I approached the front desk, the receptionist—a young girl—gave me a strange look before informing me of the check-in time. The lack of warmth in her greeting was disappointing, especially compared to my experiences at other hotels in Japan. The weather on February 6, the day of my arrival, was harsh—it was very windy as it was cold, and I had to walk from Seto bus stop to the hotel with two suitcases in freezing conditions. Exhausted from my flight and journey to Munakata, I had hoped for a more welcoming atmosphere. Instead, after a brief trip to a nearby Lawson to grab food, I returned to the hotel and waited in the lobby, as it was too cold to explore. By 2 PM, fatigue took over, and I lay down on the lobby couch to rest. Despite dozing off in the cold lobby, no staff member approached me. The heating system inside the hotel was weak, and I kept waking up from the biting cold. At 2:30 PM, I heard guests checking in, which surprised me—no one had informed me that I could start checking in earlier. When I lined up at the front desk, the same receptionist from earlier recognized me but seemed to push her colleague forward to assist me, which I found rude and unprofessional for a staff member at a four-star hotel. However, her colleague was kind and attentive. Since I speak Japanese, the check-in process went smoothly. There was an error on my part regarding my booking—I had mistakenly reserved my stay until February 10 instead of February 9. I explained this at the front desk, and the staff member tried to help but apologized, as the booking was made through a third-party site and couldn’t be refunded. I understood this and simply wanted to inform them of my earlier departure. The hotel itself is old but well-maintained. I stayed in a Japanese-style room, which, despite its age, was clean and comfortable. The air-conditioning unit was quite old, but amenities were available on the first floor. The hotel seems to be popular with families or tour groups. There are a lot of Korean guests as well. Even for a business hotel, customer service toward foreign solo travelers was severly lacking. It's embarassing to think that was the kind of training they gave their employees at a four star hotel. I'm writing this review while staying at Comfort Hotel, a cheaper chain of hotel but the omotenashi I received here is on another level. There isn’t much to do nearby Mercure Munakata. The closest kaisendon restaurant was about a 30-minute walk away. Unfortunately, the weather during my stay was terrible—windy and snowy—so I didn’t explore much. There was a church (?) next to the hotel, but nothing else of note. One of the highlights of the stay was the hot spring, which had both indoor and outdoor baths. I didn’t eat at the hotel restaurant, as the prices seemed high. A free shuttle bus is available to Togo Station, but you need to inform the front desk of your preferred departure time in advance. I didn’t take many photos of the hotel itself—there wasn’t much worth capturing besides the bath, where phones aren’t allowed. Would I stay here again? No. Would I recommend this hotel? No, especially not for solo foreign travelers.

If you’re visiting Fukuoka but can’t make it to the onsen town and still want to to experience onsen, then this is the place for you! I have stayed in Dormy Inn hotels in other locations and decided to stay here as well for my Fukuoka trip because a nice onsen bath after a day of intense shopping will recharge me right away. The location is great (there’s a subway station exit right outside). I wasn’t able to try the breakfast buffet because I wanted to visit other nice brunch cafes nearby. My room was spacier than the other rooms I’ve seen in Japan (two people could have their luggage out and have no problem moving around the room). And the onsen has a bath that’s outside which was sooo nice! And the complimentary popsicle after was 🤌

I have stayed at this hotel twice already and had a great experience both times. The location is unbeatable, situated just directly opposite Hakata Station. It’s super convenient for getting around the city and beyond. The room size is relatively spacious compare to other hotels in Fukuoka.

Though location is a little far but the free shuttle bus to and fro Orio station made is super convenient for an onsen retreat. There's a direct bus from Kitakyushu Airport to Orio station too, which makes it even better. Thankfully, the staff kindly took note of the shuttle reservation request made during booking, otherwise, it would have been very inconvenient to contact them and expensive to get to the resort by other means. They left a note to check the official website for pick-up point but there was no specific information - something that can be improved. The location was found to be BEHIND Maxvalue Shop (see first few photos). The resort is visited by mainly locals so it was helpful to see and ask them for confirmation. Facilities might a bit old but generally clean so it was okay. The room is nice and comfortable, particularly the view. It was very nice to see the hotel using reusable wares with even a refillable jug to get water from a machine at the shared space. Both sides of the natural onsen is switched between male and female everyday. Supper tantan noodles is great! Breakfast is not bad with both fusion western style and traditional Japanese options. It was a very nice and relaxing time!

I had a wonderful 3-night stay at this hotel. The location is very convenient, just a short walk from both the subway and JR station, making it easy to get around. The breakfast offered a good mix of both Japanese and Western options—healthy and delicious, with the cheesecake being a standout treat each morning. As a solo traveler, I found the bed spacious and extremely comfortable. After long days of sightseeing, the hot springs were the perfect way to relax and ease my tiredness. Overall, a great experience and I would definitely stay here again!

It was excellent. I was initially skeptical because of the cheap price despite the good reviews, but it turned out to be an amazing experience. I can't speak Japanese at all, and my English isn't great either, but the staff kindly used a translator to communicate with me. They were incredibly kind. The amenities are quite good. The room had a clean bathroom and shower (with a bathtub), which I appreciated. I didn't go to the public bath, so I can't comment on that. The view is absolutely stunning. Lying down and looking straight at the park, I felt truly relaxed. The accommodation provided taxi discount tickets and even helped me with reservations for a boat ride and taxis, so I had no trouble getting around. The boat ride boarding point was right in front of the accommodation, so I could walk back to the hotel without much trouble.I also added dinner, and the quality was quite high. I almost missed breakfast because I turned off my alarm, but they kindly called my room to wake me up. Thank you so much.Overall, it was the best. There may not be many tourist attractions nearby, but if you're coming for a boat ride, I don't think there's a better place than this.

2nd time to stay in 2 years because loved their location, in the middle between Tenjin and Gion where lots of shopping and dining choices but not that crowded as in Hakata JR station.

The location of the hotel was further from the station than expected, even if you use the nearest one at West 24. Since I'm not taking the train to get to the airport after checkout, it does not matter much. I must compliment the counter staff, Meng, for helping me to check with the luggage service provider as well as my former hotel as my luggage did not arrive in time during my check in. It was a panicky situation for a solo female traveller, especially when I was due for a morning flight the following day. Onsen facilities are great, there is even an onsite sauna. As the onsen is separately run, you don't have to bring towel from your room to the onsen. Breakfast is great too, with several options from the buffet line.
KAMENOI HOTEL YANAGAWA

Great venue for a quiet holiday and enjoying hot spring bath. Guests can enjoy indoor and outdoor bath without paying extra. We enjoyed very much the private bath which can be reserved with an extra ¥2000. Room is large with a Japanese style sitting lounge. The toilet/bathroom is quite old but most important it's clean. The public laundry has two washing machines available for guest's use, but the room is not cleaned properly and the washing machines are quite old. That's the main set back after all. Overall it's a nice place with walking distance to boat ride and eel restaurants and tourist attractions.
