We stayed here for one night in the beginning of october and we enjoyed it. Staff is really friendly and helpful. The restaurant is great and serves excellent food and is a real gem. At the back of the restaurant there is also a nice terrace. The hotel has a small bar which serves excellent cocktails. The whole of the hotel is really beautiful and lavishly decorated with a lot of different knicks and knacks (clocks, guns etc.). The room we had was basic and is the only reason why this place doesn't get 5 stars form us. The shower is separate from the toilet that is great but the walls do not extend to the roof, making the room (bedroom, toilet and bathroom) in the upper part one big place so all the smells and noises go around the whole of the room, we didn't like that. The room had a fridge which is a plus. The hotel has no pool.

A lovely hotel located in the middle of Tana, the country's capital, but you would never know. Tana is loud, bustling and confusing, but La Varangue seems an oasis with a lovely and quiet courtyard bordering comfortable guest rooms. The hotel offers a restaurant and bar with outdoor seating, and a solid menu. Also parking. I would stay here again.

Our room was in a modern block looking over the dining courtyard and it had a balcony which was pleasant to sit out. Main building of the hotel attractively decorated with a huge collection of antiques which made it very characterful. The restaurant is lauded as the “best in Tana” but we found our 2 dinners and 1 lunch rather mixed in quality and it was extremely expensive . Breakfast was good - small buffet and eggs cooked to order. We were able to have a walk out from the hotel, it felt safe - well the presidential palace is just round the corner!

To be honest: La varangue was not our first choice, but as our booking was rather last minute, we did not have too many options. However, we could not have found a better place. The pictures do not do justice to the place: it is very cosy, very clean and very beautiful. And the staff were extremely friendly. No problem to have some late night snacks in the lovely bar. The rooms (beds) were good and breakfast was superb.

Tucked away behind the President's Palace after the hustle and bustle of the streets around had thought it would be a noisy experience. It was not. The view from the room (first floor, back of property) was across the properties courtyard garden over the surrounding buildings roof tops. The stairways and room were both prepared for mosquitos in terms of burners and nets around the bed. The balcony door was open on arrival (mid-afternoon) so a lovely freshness in the room. Bed was comfortable. Adequate storage for our one night stay. Lighting was comfortable and good enough to read by (paper books rather in keeping with the quirkiness of the general decor rather than digital reading). We had a quiet night both in terms of city noise and hotel noise despite being over the restaurant (which was well used with groups, couples and local families). Didn't know it then but was the best selection of tea and coffee making facilities we experienced on our Madagascar trip. all of the hotel team were friendly and helpful. Also a great location to go for an early evening stroll down to the Lac and up one of the many sets of steps after 24 hours of journeying a leg stretch needed.

Luxury hotel in the heart of Tana. Friendly multilingual staff (French and English). Comfortable rooms, large, modern and clean bathrooms. Televisions with some international channels, good wifi in the rooms. Each room has a safe. The beds and furniture are very comfortable. Mosquito nets and repellent provided. Nice balconies on which to sit and relax. The hotel is decorated throughout with antique memorabilia from Madagascar's past, so if you have free time it is worth wandering around for a look. Good restaurant - the best we visited in Madagascar - with a much larger menu than anywhere else. Everything was well cooked, there was liberal supply of pre-meal snacks, and plenty of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks options. The breakfast buffet was well stocked and offered a good variety of options. Being in the centre of the city the sounds of the city can be heard, but the rooms are quiet. We stayed here three times during our visit to Madagascar and each time it was a a great comfort.

We stayed here for a couple of nights when we first arrived in Madagascar. It's a beautiful hotel as others have said, with an astonishing array of antiques and artifacts. Our room, a deluxe, was large with a king size bed, a mini fridge and a huge bathroom. Like almost everywhere we went in Madagascar, the mosquitoes ruled, but that's hardly the fault of the hotel; efficient insecticide spray was provided. The restaurant was pricey by Malagasy standards but the food was good. Well, except for the Zebu steak which my husband had the first night; supposedly fillet, it was very tough. We saw someone else eating it the next day and it looked as though they found it tough too; they were sawing through it! But in fairness I have to say that we ate 2 dinners, one lunch and a breakfast there and everything else was delicious. All the staff (reception, housekeeping and restaurant) were efficient and friendly. We have 4 nights in Antananarivo at the end of our Madagascar holiday and we have booked to return to La Varangue; I can hardly give a better endorsement.

We stayed for 3 nights at the start of our tour and found the hotel charming. A peaceful setting, our room opened onto the garden where there are 8 tortoises. We ate in the restaurant where the food was excellent. It is not difficult to choose dishes which are a reasonable price. The fillet of zebu was particularly delicious. Breakfast ample, and varied. Most notable was the warm welcome and friendliness of the staff.
