The city lies in the area of the northern foothills of the Harz at an altitude between 180 m and 555 m above sea level on the border of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. It stretches south into the Radau valley and borders the Harz National Park. The Radau flows through the city in a south-north direction. To the north it is connected to the city of Braunschweig by the A 395 and thus to the A 2. In the east-west direction it connects Wernigerode and Quedlinburg via the federal roads 6 and 82 with the A 7. The highest point in the Harz Mountains, the Brocken, is about 13 km south. Bad Harzburg has a prevailing mild climate and a wooded area. From 1831 Bad Harzburg was known as a spa and bathing resort. The salt works were closed in 1851 and the actual bathing business was established. Following the example of the large European baths, a colony of initially foreign wealthy citizens was created who knew how to combine the sophisticated requirements of the time at the foot of the Harz: elegant hotels, a casino, a horse racing track and numerous spa facilities. The 8 The tree top path in Bad Harzburg, which opened in May 2015, is also suitable for wheelchair users and strollers with a length of around 1000 m and a height of over 20 m thanks to a 300 m long, spiral ramp in the entrance tower. The facility is located in the spa gardens of Bad Harzburg and leads across the Cold Valley and a pond. The lynx enclosure can be reached in just under 60 minutes on the signposted hiking trails after the ride on the Burgberg cable car. From the 1st April to mid-November you can also take the 875 bus directly to the lynx enclosure and back again. An 18-hole golf course and the SwinGolf course are available for sporting activities, and the Bad Harzburger Sole-Therme (32 ° C warm brine) and the indoor pool Silberbornbad are available for swimming. There is also the Skyrope high ropes park and sports park at the racetrack (equestrian sports, soccer, hockey, beach volleyball and tennis, fitness trail, jogging trails, archery trail, inline skating), a toboggan run, Nordic walking and hiking trails and especially in Winter the outdoor ice rink. The approximately 13 km long Teufelsstieg leads as a hiking trail to the Brocken. Downhill fans and bikers will also get their money's worth in the Harz Mountains. There is no shortage of excursions. z. B. Winter sports fans can easily get to the winter sports area in Braunlage by bus. The Bocksbergbob in Hahnenklee offers (even in winter) a fast descent for young and old on a distance of 1,250 m.
