Ideal location for seeing Bakewell. Nice atmosphere, shame they stop serving food at 6pm.

I was staying in the area for work and decided to have lunch before going home. Solo-dining, especially for women, can be daunting. I picked the Red Lion because it's quite large and has little nooks to hide in and dine fairly inconspicuously. This attempt was, sadly, ruined by the bar member (short grey hair, glasses, over 50), who decided to make an example of my solo-dining. As I ordered my food at the bar, she asked me if there was any other food for the table. I said no. She asked again, slowly, if that meant that there was no other food being ordered for the table: I confirmed that this was the case. She then said loudly, in a high pitched voice "Aww, just you by yourself then"? This felt patronising and insulting and I wish I had left then and there. Sadly I continued with the order of steak sandwich (rare), which turned out to be more of a lettuce and mustard sandwich with some overcooked and tough pieces of beef thrown in as an afterthought. The "bloomer" bread was standard white bread which was a little stale and the fries had been cooked a significant amount of time before serving, and had clearly been reheated. They were dry and I left most of them. Overall, an unpleasant experience marred by bad food, average beer and terrible service.

Stayed for new years eve and a meal. We thought the meal was excellent, nothing was too much trouble for the staff who looked after us. We stayed in a small double, room very warm but cosy! Only bit that was annoying which had got nothing to do with the hotel was bin lorry at ten to 7 on new years day morning waking us up

Absolutely awful service , was told we could order food until 7.45 and they woukdnt serve us at 7.35. Very rude staff and happy to take our £27 drinks order. We are fuming. This is not what you expect when you come to a lovely part of england , no wonder this country is going to the dogs

We wanted to have lunch here. It was a sunny autumn day and I felt the dining room just up the stairs was unbearably hot. There were no windows open at all, so I suggested we eat outside in the back patio garden. When asked the table number, we said out side in the back garden, we got a brusque “No, we don’t serve food in the garden” from the woman behind the bar. So we left. She came out with us to wedge open the back door and I asked her what was the reason. We were ignored.

Myself and my husband visited for one night, we came our motorbike, there was unfortunately no parking but plenty of parking nearby. I messaged ahead of our arrival to see if there was a possibility or checking in early due to being sweaty and wanting to freshen up after the journey, we did manage to get into the room early which was great. Fantastic room, they had thought everything, there wasn’t just tea and coffee in the room, but hot chocolate, cordial, apple and orange juice, porridge and biscuits, excellent selection. Lovely beer garden in the sun, we didn’t eat but from what we saw it all looked lovely. The staff where lovely and friendly, and they love a banter. we would definitely recommend and would stop here again if we come back.

Came in with our family on the off chance and the guy behind the bar kindly accommodated us all. Food was good quality and plentiful. Good pub food. Food prices were good although drinks a little on the steep side. Was a slight mix up with our order but quickly rectified. Staff were very apologetic. Nice experience and would return
