Ermitage - Mont-Saint-Michel

SCAM! SCAM! SCAM! Please be careful when booking this hotel. My French husband, and my American mother and I, along with our 5 month baby were at this hotel. The images online are enhanced and DO NOT reflect the actual rooms. The rooms are overpriced with old furniture and lay-outs that make no sense. The heating and air-conditioning DO NOT WORK. Again, please be aware that the heat and air in the rooms (we had two suites) do not work. When we asked the owner to help us, he screamed and yelled at us that we were wrong. He ever brought a ladder to our room to prove the air worked and then saw for himself if did not. But instead of offering us a discount or free breakfast, or even just a "sorry", he stormed out and said nothing. He then proceeded to draw us diagrams of how air-conditioning works. It was hostile and uncomfortable. He yelled and became so crazy that my 5 month baby cried hysterically in fear and my 78 year old mother was scared. As we left, we saw an air-conditioning repair van show up and after telling us the air does work and we are just dumb, he had a repair man come, right in front of our faces! It was bizarre and uncomfortable. Also, the restaurant is likely in the Michelin guide because it's one of the few formal places to eat. But please be aware the experience is not formal, up-scale, or elegant. Our lobster was old, smelled very bad, and we did not even finish it. The pasta sauce was disgusting and the prices were very expensive for what in the end was a terrible meal. Please, my husband who is French was absolutely horrified by how rude the owner was and how terrible the rooms were. He similarly was sick from the restaurant and said no French person would consider this a nice hotel or restaurant for the price.

We were guests at the restaurant, not staying at the hotel. The welcome was fulsome, the staff super helpful, the setting delightful. However we were instantly bombarded with an offer of champagne and caviar on a trolley pushed to our table. It was invasive. Secondly I'm no fan of pets in restaurants but there were two dogs with separate customers, one being held in the customer's arms with its paws on the table. I noticed no attempt to correct this from the staff. Were the customers perhaps too important or too rich? Our meal (dinner) itself fell far short of expectations. The starter of asparagus was good. The main course, however, of pre sale lamb, was just this side of edible. The lamb, supposedly amongst the best in the world, was overcooked, dry, barely warm and small. It had a slightly unpleasant taste. The accompaniment was a round white mash, which according to the menu was lingot beans, tasted like a rather unpleasant potato puree. It was dry, stodgy, barely warm again and needed a double swallow. Apart from this there were no vegetables. The dessert, however, of white chocolate and pear, was excellent. My wife and I stayed 4 days in the Mont St Michel area, ate at 5 different restaurants, and this was definitely bottom of the list as well as the most expensive. The place is pretty, elegant, and classy, and the staff friendly, but the word 'pretentious' springs to mind, and if only the food could have matched the surroundings and the service
