Honest Review: Unsafe, Unhygienic, Discriminatory inaccessible Hotel Palia Puerto del Sol, Cala d’Or, Mallorca This is the most disappointing and unsafe holiday I’ve ever experienced. I would strongly advise against booking this hotel, especially if you have dietary needs, mobility issues, or care about hygiene and basic safety. The hotel failed on every fundamental level — and I ended up ill with vomiting and diarrhoea, which I believe was directly linked to how the pool hygiene was handled. First Impressions When we arrived, the hotel looked okay on the surface. But within minutes, we saw signs of poor organisation and unfair treatment. Only one staff member was checking people in, and even though several guests were waiting, a Spanish couple were allowed to jump the queue and were checked in first. This set the tone for what felt like preferential treatment for certain guests throughout our stay. ⸻ 🛏️ Rooms & Accessibility Our apartment was very dated, with uneven wooden flooring that felt unsafe — especially for me, as I have a mobility disability. The bathroom had no floor mat, making it very slippery. Although the room was cleaned daily, it was far from safe or accessible. I saw several elderly or disabled guests also struggling with the layout and stairs. The hotel is not suitable for guests with mobility needs. There are stairs everywhere, and steep pathways and although there’s one lift to the restaurant, staff repeatedly turned it off about a hour before mealtimes had finished, my opinion was they were not wanting people to go down to restaurant near closing time this forced elderly and disabled guests to use steep stairs. 🍽️ Food & Hygiene: Dangerous Standards Food was one of the worst parts of this stay. Breakfast was always poor — burnt sausages, sloppy eggs, cold beans, and frozen-in-the-middle hash browns. The fryer oil was black, clearly not changed in days. I saw chefs handling food with bare hands, including one cooking churros in the same filthy oil just used for sausages. There were no allergen labels or ingredient signs anywhere — a huge problem, as my son is dairy-free and I have Crohn’s disease. Because of this, we had to eat at the nearby marina at extra cost, some days I just ate bread and crisp which isn’t acceptable. I raised the issue of cold and inedible food with the manager. His response? “I eat here and I like it.” No apology, no action, and my complaint wasn’t logged. I also saw multiple guests reheating their food in a microwave, which speaks volumes about the kitchen standards. ⸻ 🏊 Serious Health Incident After Pool Contamination I personally witnessed faeces in the pool, and immediately reported it to staff. Shockingly, it took them over 40 minutes to act. Guests were left swimming in it, and staff seemed unconcerned. The next day I saw a staff member cleaning scum from the side of the pool while people were still in the water — again, completely inappropriate. Two days later, I became unwe

We stayed for 8 nights at Palia Puerto del Sol as a family of five (kids aged 9, 7, and 4). We arrived at 4am to a clean reception and a friendly welcome. Our 2-bed apartment (Room 383) was spacious and initially clean, with a fridge (with complimentary water), kettle, and working air-con. Unfortunately, things went downhill quickly. By day two, the air-con stopped blowing cold air and a strong sewage smell developed. Despite multiple complaints (5 by memory) the issue was never resolved. Ants began invading the apartment due to gaps in the floor, and cockroaches appeared on the balcony and in the hallway. The floors were never mopped, and bed linens for the kids weren’t changed during the stay. Water in the apartment was salty – problematic for hair washing, especially with coloured hair and/or extensions. The snack bar (located at the main pool) had mainly chips, burgers, hotdogs and salads. Cakes and fruit are served around 3:30. Selection is fine and plentiful. Ice cream is not self serve and you must ask a member of the bar staff to get it for you. Most of us (including in-laws) had experienced stomach upset by the end of the week. The pool area was poorly maintained. Ashtrays and dirty sunbeds were left uncleaned each morning. A rat was spotted running through the pool area, and when someone defecated in the pool, it took staff 20 minutes to act. It reopened the next day with minimal urgency shown. On the plus side, the animation team were excellent – always friendly and engaging with the kids. The view from the chill-out bar overlooking the marina was lovely. Food at the buffet was fine but repetitive, with little for kids. A dedicated kids area with lower serving station would be ideal. The floor in the restaurant area is quite slippery. We witnessed several people take a tumble. My own daughter did also. Not one member of the restaurant staff came to check on her. To their credit, a member of the animation team ran to her assistance shortly after the accident. Cleanliness overall – both in rooms and common areas – was lacking. Cleaning staff were minimal and unmotivated. The sub-level entertainment area ("entertainment dungeon") was musky and outdated, and notably lacks a functioning bar – due to fire regulations, you're required to carry drinks from the chill-out bar yourself, which is inconvenient. The hotel has a large number of French and German guests, along with some British. I didn’t come across any other Irish guests during our stay, which was unusual based on past holidays. The staff are mostly French also. Not a negative, just an observation. Note that floats aren’t allowed in any pools, not even in the kids pool with the slides. Accessibility is poor – lots of steps and only one ramp. While the marina location is scenic, it’s a 20-minute uphill walk to the center of Cala d'Or. The nearby Spar shop was handy. In summary, while Cala d'Or was lovely and we might return to the area, would we stay at Palia Puert

We had a brilliant time here. Definitely would recommend the sea view rooms. Rooms were very big and clean. The staff were all very friendly. Lots of steps but - especially getting the suitcases up to the room! Would definitely go back. Perfect location.

Must admit, the mixed reviews on the place had left me a little bit nervous ahead of the trip, our first to Cala d'Or. But in the end, we left having had an absolutely wonderful stay. The hotel is beautifully situated right on Cala d'Or Marina and it's an absolutely spectacular setting. Both the restaurant and Chill Out bar (an adult only pool area by day, bar and entertainment setting by evening) have magnificent views of the marina and it really has the 'wow' factor. We enjoyed sitting outside overlooking it at every mealtime. The food itself is brilliantly varied. We found the lunch offerings in particular really, really good. The snack bar at the main pool had great options every day too if you didn't fancy making it over to the restaurant. The reception staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, while the animation team do an incredible job. They work so hard and keep everyone entertained around the pool every day. For those wanting to do so, there are loads of games and activities every day. Our room (a one bedroom apartment) was extremely spacious and had a nice view overlooking the gardens at the back of the hotel. Towels were changed daily and if I had one minor criticism it would be that I'd expect more/better cleaning every day too. In terms of another couple of minor issues - we had to visit reception three times upon arrival. We were on an early flight so while we were able to be checked in upon arrival, we were asked to return at 2pm to be given the room key which we did. However, the staff said they were too busy at this point with fresh arrivals to sort the safety deposit box and asked us to come back a third time. It would've been much better to do everything in one go. The hotel also contains a LOT of steps to get anywhere and no stairs so if you aren't particularly mobile, this might not be the hotel for you. We were unable to get a late checkout which although frustrating, wasn't the end of the world. The hotel has a luggage room to keep your luggage stored in and just beside this room are male and female shower facilities with a big changing room and hairdryer. This was absolutely fine and allowed us to enjoy our final day at the pool without any stress even though we had to be out of the room by midday. We are also allowed to continue using the all inclusive facilities until leaving the hotel. Other good things - there's a free shuttle bus to Cala Gran beach in the centre of Cala d'Or that runs every morning and every early afternoon, either side of a siesta. Although it gets busy, the minibus keeps going round every 10 minutes so you aren't waiting long. The ting ting train also stops right outside, once an hour all day, and will take you anywhere you need across the resort. You're also only a 5 minute taxi ride from Cala d'Or resort and a 15 minute walk away from Cala Egos. All in all, a brilliant stay and we needn't have been worried. Would definitely return.

HOTEL PALIA REVIEW!! I would like to start this review by saying that we didnt check other reviews because we came to the same hotel last year & had an amazing week, couldnt fault it at all. Family of 2 adults & 3 children (12,10&6) We booked our trip with Loveholidays. We started our trip away on Thursday 5th June, we got to the hotel really late at night, 11.30 ish, got to our room (367), & as soon as we opened the door, had to squash 3 cockroaches, & assumed they had snuck in when the cleaners had been in cleaning from the previous people staying. Its a foreign (to us) country, & we werent expecting to see no bugs/cockroaches etc, but it gets excessive. Every evening after we had 3/4/5 roaches to kill before we could settle down for the night. Tuesday 10th June rolled around, & my daughter (6) was being sick & had 💩, we took it in turns staying in the room with her, & being at the pool with our sons, so as not to let it ruin their day. She had finished being sick & 💩 by about 3pm. My husband managed to get some Calpol from a pharmacy & she perked up, enough that we went out for tea, but stayed close to the hotel. When we had done for the night, we walked back to our room only to find that the electrics werent working, so my husband went down to reception whilst we waited on the wall outside the room. He returned with a member of staff who quickly sorted the problem out, but when the lights came on, was faced with 2 cockroaches. He killed & got rid of them & said he was really sorry, it was an embarassing situation, & it was unusual, & to let us know if we found any more as he had some spray we could use. Fast forward half an hour, I was getting ready in our room, & our son (10) was sat on the sofa watching tv, he came running to me screaming saying there was a cockroach on his face, in tears & hysterical. It had moved from his face & I managed to whack it off his tshirt, & killed it. I left my husband with the kids at the room & went down to reception to explain the situation, & tell them we needed the cockroach spray. The same member of staff came again, with the spray, told us all to get out, sprayed it & said we could go back in in 5 minutes, he left the spray for us in case there was any more, then he left. I knew this was rubbish, & Googled, & it said you cant be in there for 4 hours. By this time it was midnight. I went back to reception again, & explained this, & said we needed a new room. He said the hotel was fully booked, to which I stated I didnt care, my children were hysterical & I wasnt spending another night crushing cockroaches. He agreed there was an infestation, & found us another room, by this point it was 12.30. He took us to the new room, which was the wrong room, & let himself into a room which someone was in, tv on, lights off but with bathroom light on, someone was clearly in there, he shut the door & just left 🤷🏼‍♀️ & said ‘wrong room!’ We got to the room that we were actually supposed to be in (349),

The location is spot on, right on the marina. The hotel is very spread out rooms aren't always near the restaurant, reception or the swimming pools but it wasn't too bad when you found your way. I would like to point out I was travelling alone and arrived at 1am in the morning it would have been nice if reception could have walked me to my room as it wasn't near reception itself and walking with my case in the dark at that time in the morning wasn't the best. My first room wasn't good at all and I had to ask to me moved to a higher floor which was accommodated in the end and I was much happier so thank you to reception for doing that for me. The rooms are basic they could be a little cleaner, towels are changed daily which I feel is alot but no bedding was changed, no floors swept or mopped. Food was standard all inclusive i always found something to eat, pools were well kept and staff were nice. Overall I enjoyed my stay.

We have just got back from a lovely holiday in cala d'or. It will be easier for me to break this review down into pros and cons. Pros: -adult pool at the top was nice to relax in and was deeper than I thought based on pictures -adults only rooftop bar, the majority of staff serving on here were lovely and there are a wide range of drinks included -views overlooking the marina were beautiful -the dessert options were amazing -reception staff were super helpful and regularly booked us taxis. We also had to check out at 12 but the transfer wasn't picking us up until half 7, they allowed us to keep our bands and use all facilities, including a shower and luggage storage. -relatively close to most things if you enjoy walking, cala d'or about 20 minutes, spar shop about 5 minutes and large supermarket about 10 minutes -snack bar is one of the best I've seen at an all inclusive hotel, all cooked fresh and included burgers, hot dogs, salads, pastries and jalapeño poppers which we loved! -air con and tv in room made our nights comfortable and made it easy to relax on an evening before bed Cons: -although I was aware of the salt water shower I didn't realise how much it would actually affect my hair when washing -food served at lunch and dinner was so salty and the majority of the time the food was cold even when getting there as soon as it started -some staff were rude and appeared to not want to be there. There were also certain staff that made it evident they preferred the French and German guests over English guests which could feel uncomfortable at times. -hotel rooms were never mopped so if you wear white socks prepare for them to be filthy -being located in the marina everything was very expensive and so the majority of the time we had to walk into cala d'or if we wanted to have a drink or food outside the hotel -the entertainment was not the best, the best night was karaoke but it seemed to go downhill from there. Overall it wasn't a bad stay but I don't think I will return to this hotel. However, cala d'or is lovely.

The best thing was the view of marina, room was basic got a kettle and two cups, no cutlery or tea towels, service was non existing couldn't get reception despite being able to see staff from room. This isn't star I would give it 2. Food was awful we ate only at breakfast then it was only beans and egg or tomatoes, British not catered for much.no lifts to rooms, very noisy as by reception all transport stopped by our room all hours of night,no sleep for a week, won't be going back.

We had a great stay at the hotel in May. Great central position on the Marina. Only a short walk from the centre of Cala d’ Or. The food was always good and lots of choices. The rooms are massive! Were cleaned, beds made and towel’s changed every day. A week was not enough! We will be back for two weeks later in the year. xxxx
