The Fox Goes Free

Spontaneous lunch time visit on way back from airport and a real find. Despite being midweek it was buzzing and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Great menu choice and although there was a Tuesday special deal I opted for the fish pie which was delicious and very good portion size. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and excellent food. Perfect combination. Worth having a wander around the pretty village as well.

I would heartily recommend The Fox Goes Free - it’s a beautiful old pub in a stunning location, so makes a great destination whether you’ve been out exploring the South Downs or just wanting to go somewhere lovely to eat. Our food was, in the main, exceptional. Some of the best pub food we’ve had - sensational pie and wonderful fish & chips. I said “in the main”, as we did have an issue with one of our dishes, which wasn’t cooked correctly. Whilst this is understandable especially at a busy time, it wasn’t really improved on being returned at our request to the kitchen. Usually a dish which was less than fantastic would dampen my experience and review score, however the manner in which the waitress (and management) dealt with the issue was nothing short of exceptional. Upon collecting the plates, she noticed that the dish in question hadn’t been eaten, asked if it was any better after being sent back, apologised profusely, asked if we’d like anything else instead, and didn’t charge for it. The measure of a hospitality establishment isn’t how they deal with everything when it’s going well, rather it’s how they deal with an issue without it becoming a problem, and The Fox Goes Free scores top makers here. We’ll definitely be back. Thank you.

I did not stay at the hotel I only had a meal. My choice of a curry from the menu of the Fox is Free was absolutely ruined by the deceit of the chef. A note to the chef. Please do not advertise a dish as being a curry when it doesn't have any of the spices that go to make a curry. A curry is NOT a stew sprinkled with Cayenne Pepper, as was served to me. A curry contains spices such as Cumin, Coriander, Turmeric, Garlic, Ginger, Mustard Seed, Fenugreek, and Black Pepper. Other spices are also added, but not Cayenne pepper.

Cosy dinner by an open fire - home-made ice cream was a highlight. Friendly & attentive staff. Comfortable, quiet room with good en suite. Excellent breakfast - the most perfectly poached egg I've had in a long time! Overall, would definitely recommend for a night away.

We arrived early evening without a reservation. Surely not busy on a Wednesday? The FGF most certainly is! Christain shoehorned us in for a lovely early dinner which explained its popularity. Goodfood. Sensible prices and friendly staff. Such a shameits 80 miles from home.

The Fox Goes Free have accommodated us for Lunch & Dinner over the Glorious Goodwood week for a fair few years now and every time, we have been so pleased with the service provided! From the initial conversating over email to being served the lovely food on the day, the Team are extremely consistent and we never have any complaints! Thank you Team, we look forward to coming again next year :)
