Our 4th visit for lunch. Standards appear to be slipping. We were seated in a lounge room for lunch, when we had explicitly booked to eat in the dining room/ restaurant. Our booking details were not checked on arrival. We were seated in one of the “Lounge” areas, and waited 15 minutes before we were asked if we would like a drink. After ordering 3 glasses of sherry, after 10 minutes, we were informed that there was no sherry. The low lounge coffee-style table was then provided with cutlery in the style of the expectation of a “Bar” snack. We explained that we had booked for a formal lunch in the dining room. The food was superb - no complaints here - but the staff appeared to be inexperienced, and the standard of service was well below par. After recommending the hotel to many friends, we were most disappointed by our experience on September 11, and as a result we shall not return; neither shall we recommend the hotel in the future. What a pity, we previously thought we had found the ideal place for a perfect lunch.
Whatley Manor on the face of it is everything you would expect when spending over a grand for 24hrs stay and use of the spa. The staff were welcoming and friendly, the grounds beautiful and expansive, our suite was spacious, clean and pleasant and the spa had pretty good facilities given the size of the hotel. So why the 'average' review? Unfortunately it comes down to money and the overly nitpicking, almost penny-pinching attitude, which totally cheapened our otherwise lovely stay. Firstly if one is paying £869 for a night's stay, one does not expect a service charge of £107 to be added on top. The restaurant also charged for bread and butter, which surely should be part of the welcoming service and finally after leaving my brand new jumper behind (still wrapped in its shop tissue paper) I was charge £6 postage (reasonable in itself), but when the jumper arrived it had been stuffed into a green compost bag before being wedged into a far too small jiffy bag with the postage showing £4.89. Why Whatley Manor needs to take this penny-pinching attitude is beyond me and entirely unnecessary - completely cheapening the whole experience.
Getting into the rear car park through the narrow driveway which is obviously a relic from the coach and horses days was quite an experience but no real problem, it's just that I'm used to wide Australian driveways. The rooms are converted stables but they have been converted with style and considerable cost. My room, facing south so the sunshine warmed the room, was well-appointed and comfortable. The pub itself, just a short walk away so you don't get too wet if it's raining, oozed charm and hospitality. The reception staff were most obliging and courteous. The hotel is centrally located on Malmesbury's High Street so you're close to all the major attractions of the town such as the Abbey, the Athelstan Museum and the Avon River walk. My only regret is that I could only stay for one night. God-willing, I shall return.

As others have written, this hotel could be good - but there are just so many failings which make a stay here disappointing. A bath mat was missing. Towels are fine but are not generously sized. Wifi was good. It was frustrating that the reception desk was not manned more often - especially annoying at check out time as there was no one to say 'How was your stay? ' (I am not sure if they are interested in feedback because if they were, they would make sure there was someone present at check out time) But the hugest disappoinment was the lack of cooked breakfast. This was a surprise - I had no idea that I was booked into somewhere that did not serve any cooked breakfast. It then became apparent that cooked breakfasts stopped a week ago. I felt very sorry for the waiter who had to deal with many unhappy customers - none of which were aware of this change. The continental breakfast that was served was not very appealing - everything just seemed cheap. (So disappointing especially as there is a fantastic deli/bakery just up the road serving amazing croissants) For the price that is charged, there should be a cooked breakfast offered. I would imagine that all the other hotels in Tetbury offer a cooked breakfast. For this reason, I would not return.
