One of the better ryokan in Yudanaka, the price is very good, an average of more than 2,000 a night, enjoy the hot spring hotel experience of one bed and two meals. The hotel has many years of history, but it feels very new, not old at all, clean everywhere. The room is small with a small balcony facing the river.
The clerks are of a certain age and have poor language communication, but there is no inconvenience and they are polite.
The location of the hotel is good, it is about 20 minutes walk from the station by the road. The hotel can pick up from the station once for free. There are also buses passing by. The hotel is right at the hot spring street. It is very convenient to walk to the hot spring street, and it can also be sent to Yepi Park for free.
The meals are rich and local, and the taste is not as good as that of other hot spring hotels, but in the private dining room, they have a good time.
From the moment you enter Kokuya Ryokan, be prepared to leave the real world behind and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You swap your shoes for slippers at the door and don’t see them again until you leave. You will receive a warm welcome from polite and gentle-mannered staff, get taken up to your beautiful room, and once you’ve changed into your traditional yukata, it’s time to let the relaxation begin. The multi-course dinner will probably be one of the best meals you’ve had in your life, with many unusual textures and flavors to try. The futons are comfortable, and your room is kept toasty warm. There are even skincare products to keep you pampered and moisturized between soaks in the onsen. Honestly, you won’t even need to open your suitcase while you’re there.
The staff will take you through all the logistics when you arrive, but there are some things that might be useful to know in advance.
- The ryokan sends a shuttle to Yudanaka station at about 15:00 to collect new arrivals, so time your journey to take advantage of this benefit.
- The ryokan also offers guests the opportunity to catch a shuttle to the Snow Monkey Park immediately after breakfast the next morning.
- After you leave the ryokan, they will take your luggage down to the coffee shop opposite the station, so you don’t need to worry about those logistics.
- Trains from Yudanaka back to Nagano leave at 12:30 and 15:30.
- The ryokan itself has several private onsens that you can reserve for a 45-minute slot. Because the onsens are on the property, you can go in with your partner or travel companions regardless of gender. It’s a boutique hotel, so you don’t have to worry about not getting access to all the onsens you want.
- The ryokan is on the main road of the Shibu Onsen town. The hotel will give you a key so you can wonder down the main road, visiting any of the public onsens you wish - however, with so many gorgeous and more private onsens in the hotel itself, you probably won’t have time or the desire for this.
- Also, there is a coffee machine in the room! (I was worried about having to survive without coffee, and this turned out to be an unfounded concern).
We had an incredible and totally indulgent time at Kokuya. Experiencing a traditional ryokan is a privilege that you should try at least once if you can. And adding the Snow Monkeys in give the trip a double purpose, making it that much more memorable. The only thing that would have made the trip better is if we had been allowed to linger longer over every course of our dinner.

I booked a night in Yudanaka with my partner so that we could visit the Snow Monkey Park. Most places were already booked up, so we went for Yorozuya (sometimes romanised as Yoroduya) even though it was a little beyond our budget. At £300 a night for a double room with dinner and breakfast, I thought “this had better be good…” Honestly, it was probably worth double that. The ryokan itself is massive; the atrium has a scale that almost defies sense. We were greeted by staff who were awaiting our arrival, and took our luggage up to our room while we enjoyed a complementary matcha tea. A guide led us up the stairs, handed us XL yukata to wear during our stay and explained the situation with towels. She took us in the lift to our room, and showed us how to access the onsens and where the dining halls would be. We took a few moments to settle into our tatami-floored room, change into our yukata, and investigate the albeit pretty boring view from our balcony. For the record: the joy here is _inside_ the ryokan rather than outside. We tested both the on-site onsen; they operate on schedules so that male guests and female guests bathe separately, but can both enjoy both of the baths. It is worth trying both. It’s a cliché to say, but particularly coming from Europe without much experience of this kind of venue, they made me feel like I was in Spirited Away, if Spirited Away was a series of Hokusai prints. I loved relaxing in the heat of the outdoor bath surrounded by rocks, trees and classically Japanese sculptures, with snow gently falling. Suitably relaxed, it was time for dinner. This was worth the whole booking price alone. We were served a 10-course kaiseki dinner, in a private booth, with attentive staff bringing us fresh water and sake whenever we desired. Every single bite was exquisite. While not 10 courses, this extended into breakfast which was a similar luxurious experience. I was sad we only had one night there, and would go back in a heartbeat. The experience of staying here creates a stronger draw for me to return to Yudanaka than the snow monkeys. We were treated so well, and truly unwound in a setting that felt almost too good to be real.
Usually I research for weeks before a trip but this was a last minute opportunity to see the snow monkeys. My train ticket was held up and so I wasn't sure I would be able to go so booked this on the train wifi on the way there. They responded quickly to a query and the key things for me were near the train station, free shuttle to the monkey park and restaurant on site. I wanted to try an Onsen so had already decided on a Royokan. The twin room was spacious and the beds comfortable. I was close to the Womens bathroom so very convient. All areas were spotlessly clean. Being winter the heating system was very effective. I could not have been happier with my choice. The staff were extremely friendly and gave me valuable advice for my first time dip. The Royokan if perfectly placed to wander to the 9 Onsen in the village and only a couple of doors from a very expensive looking hotel. I was too tired to try the restaurant in the evening but the breakfast was a great way to start the day. My only disappointment is that I could not stay longer. I would happily return to the area and if I do, I will definitely stay here again.
This is my second stay in this lovely ryokan, and it was as magical as the first. Matsuo, the owner, is a friendly and welcoming host, who speaks English and is ready to explain anything you need and the staff are wonderful. Matsuo will drive you to the bottom of the Snow Monkey park (the rest is on foot through a lush hill). Our meals were served in a dining room just for us, and the food was a visual and gastronomic feast. We stayed in the largest room, which has its own en-suite. The ryokan has 3 hot baths, I strongly recommend trying the one outdoors: there’s something poetic about sitting in the hot pool, while rain drizzles and steam rises.
It's close to Yudanaka Station. If you go about 200 meters from the hotel, there is a bus stop on the Yudanaka side.
Easy transportation to Shigagogen Ski Resort and Snow Monkey
There is a convenience store near 100 meters, and there are not many doors in the surrounding shops, so there is nothing to see
But there's plenty of hot springs in the hotel, and there's an amusement room.
There's a massage machine, so you can have fun inside.
The food is buffet, but I'm so delicious at dinner.
I can't forget that you can eat beer and sake in unlimited wine for dinner !! 👍
Most of them are family-oriented and friends, so there are many elderly people.
Ski resort and hot springs together
Recommended here to enjoy !!!
The staff were friendly and nice 👍
The location of Ikariya ryokan is amazing. In the middle of all 9 public onsens. Staff is more than nice. Very friendly and English communication is okay! Especially the food there is amazing. I have to say it's really beyond my expectation. Anyway, it's a very good trip to experience the culture of Japanese hotel and also hot spring.
This traditional Ryokan hotel is a little gem of a place and the family hosts are just wonderful. Had the best night sleep of my 2 week trip to Japan sleeping on Ryokan bed. Rooms and hotel is extremely clean, we had our own toilet and washbasin but you have to share showers which wasn't an issue. The family are so friendly, speak very good English. It's a short walk (10mins) to Shibu-Onsen village and only 5mins to Yudanaka train station. We stayed here for one night to visit the Snow monkey park and to experience an Onsen. The hotel has 2 onsens, shared and private. You can pre-book shared Onsen at check-in. I'd love to return to this Ryokan at winter time.

Perfect
GGuest UserThe room was extremely spacious and kept us warm even at -10° outside thanks to extra heaters and cozy futons provided. Our private outdoor onsen was very warm and could be used even during coldest times (you can easily add cooler water if you feel like it is too hot). Lunch and dinner consisted of many many small plates continuously served and prepared with great care, which we enjoyed a lot (even if you don't enjoy every single dish served, you will have enough food). The couple running the ryokan helped us with small requests and was very attentive. Location in the middle of Shibu Onsen is perfect for visiting the Onsens, and it's easy to find transportation to the Snow Monkey Park and Ski resorts. Overall, we've had a great experience, and we were very positively surprised, especially given that our stay was booked last-minute and not very expensive.
CChentutu555⭐Geographical location:
Yudanaka Hot Spring is relatively close to Jigokudani Monuen, a 20-minute walk from the station. It should be noted that you can pick up the station before 5 pm. We arrived at 5:30, but the boss said we could not pick up. Although the distance is not long, it still takes a while to walk on the mountain road. You can also take a bus, which runs every half an hour.
⭐Service:
There are two shopkeepers serving you, and their attitude is very good. They will help you deliver your luggage to the coffee shop next to the station when you travel the next day. It should be noted that if you check in after 3 pm, you will not be able to make calls in the morning. I left something in the room. No one answered the phone after three calls. In the end, I had to go to the store to get it again.
⭐Facilities:
The room layout is relatively simple and the facilities are relatively simple. To be honest, the heating is relatively small and it is a bit cold at night. There is no shower room and toilet, and the sink only has cold water. Shower rooms and hot springs need to be charged separately, 500 yen. Public toilets (all small Japanese-style hotels are like this) are very clean, because there are few rooms and few guests, and you have never touched anyone else in the toilet. Anyway, the price/performance ratio is pretty good.
⭐Meals:
Our order included dinner and breakfast, but the portions were small and not enough to fill us up. When we got out of the station, we had to remember to buy some food from Lawson. There are no convenience stores in the hot spring street! Mineral water is not provided, and there is an additional charge of +100yen.
⭐Hot spring:
You can soak in 9 soups on the street, but there is only one key, so you have to go there separately. The private soup shop in the store is in B1. It is relatively simple, has a lot of moisture, and is not very clean. It is recommended to go to the public soup house. Although the boss said that there is no place to take a bath in the public bath, so you can only buy a private bath + shower, which is a bit embarrassing.
GGuest UserThe host auntie and uncle were very friendly and taken good care of our needs:) They speak excellent English and explained everything to us about using the public baths here in the onsen town. We pick the option with breakfast and dinner, although seems we have been ripped off by Trip.com, and it costs way less if we had ordered from the ryokan directly:(….a lot of people do the option without the meals as there are a good selection of rrstaurants jn the onsen town, we we hadn't known about.
1120Dee78This was the most memorable stay of our first Japanese holiday, and probably the reason we would love to visit again. My husband really wanted to experience traditional Japanese hospitality, somewhere with tatami mats on the floor, traditional food etc - and we found it here. The hotsprings and the monkey park were a bonus! This is a beautiful rural area, with friendly people and great food. Most of the wonderful things about this place have been covered by other reviews, but I just have to say that we felt so welcome, so comfortable, our hostess was the most amazing and generous cook. We would love to return, and would definitely recommend to others who would like to experience something special in Japan.
GGuest UserTraditional ryokan where the time has literally stopped. This is also seen at the location, some parts may now use a lick of paint or cleaning. Despite a good experience. The excavaters were very friendly and involved. The food was also beautiful and freshly made in a private dining room. However, the Notre was too warm to enter for a “Western” guest in May.
TTangVery nice place and wonderful service. Due to heavy snowing, we were late but they waited for us patiently. We supposed missed the dinner time but they were very friendly and considerate and everything were well prepared when we arrived under heavy snow with an empty stomach. They concered our safety over all other issues and gave us a very warmly welcome. The private onsen is free of charge and they offered the most juicy apples in the world for all you can eat!! A warmly and friendly hotel, definitely worth to visit especially if you are planning to visit the snow monkey. (5 mins car, 20 mins walk)
DDaydream803278It was good that the hot spring was a turbid hot spring. The room is old, the tatami mats are dirty, and the stains that have been soaked in cannot be removed. The curtain is fluent and has no light blocking effect. There is no heater on the toilet seat even in winter. There is a room bath, but it takes a terrible amount of time for the lukewarm water to come out of the faucet. I can't store hot water at the temperature I can take as a bath. The shower head is broken, water does not come out evenly, and the amount of water is insufficient, so it is difficult to use it as a shower. Isn't it supposed to be used? I doubt. The food is terrible. I served side dishes in a lunch box, but it looked like I had just refilled frozen and processed foods. I didn't know the amount of food, so I chose the plan with all-you-can-eat shabu-shabu, but I don't think the meat was for shabu-shabu. It was thick like a ginger. I wasn't able to serve the meat and vegetables separately. When I ordered the third dish, the color of the meat that was served became worse. I felt uncomfortable and didn't feel like asking anymore. Even though it was an all-you-can-eat plan, wasn't it prepared assuming a replacement for two or more dishes? No matter how cheap it is with GO TO, I'm disappointed. Cospa is not worth it.
GGuest UserIt's close to Yudanaka Onsen Station, so I didn't mind checking in with my luggage. It was easy. I like the appearance of the Showa era. Pets are allowed, so even those who love animals will love it. I wonder if the amount of food is too much. I couldn't finish it. I think I could have finished my meal if I didn't eat between meals before dinner. It's an old inn, so I can't say that the rooms and hot springs are clean. I think that the price is suitable for that area.
