We booked through Jet2 and I have to admit I hadn't done my homework very good. Our room was a Classic. On arrival found out that this is in the Reception Building. On the ground floor there is Reception, Bar and lounge areas. The bedrooms are located on the 1st floor - there are stairs and a lift. The other rooms with balcony's are located just across the road. On the ground floor and first floor - on the second floor is the pool and breakfast area. Our room was No. 136 which had 3 windows, which open - two windows overlooked the bar - just across the alley and the second window the road. The room is quite spacious - very clean and light from the windows, during the day. If you are a light sleeper, definitely a no. My husband wears hearing aids so once he took them out, he slept like a baby - but the noise goes on until the bars close after midnight. A good sized bed, very comfortable, pillows the same. There was only one chair - although when I asked we were provided with a dining chair. The wardrobe is opposite the door as you enter the room - you need the light on. The bathroom for two older, not so slim people was a bit tricky. The shower is to the left of the door, the sink directly in front and the toilet behind the door. So you have to open the door, lean back against the shower and the sink to squeeze round the door to get to the toilet. There is only one hook in the bathroom and not much shelf space in the room. Breakfast was good, plenty of choices and the staff are really pleasant and helpful. No problem with getting a sun bed in the pool area and the pool is very clean. We had a snack lunch on one occasion - a steak sandwich and it was excellent. The bar in the reception closed around 20.30. Daniel on reception was really helpful. The hotel is situated in a lovely spot, overlooking the harbour. Around the hotel are lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. We tried quite a few and they were all very good, quality and quantity of food. There is a local bus stop and the HOHO bus stops just up the hill from the hotel. Madeira is a beautiful island and is well worth a visit. The people are very welcoming.

Firstly, I’d like to start with the positives. The view from the hotel is second to none. The balcony looks out over the sea which is amazing. The room is a decent size and the breakfast is pretty good. However the faults for the hotel all add up and bring it right down. These are: 1. Ignored my 3 emails and Facebook message asking about parking. I also asked could I organise something to make my partners 30th birthday special. All ignored despite actually posting a video on Facebook after I messaged. 2. Adamant that I needed my hotel voucher despite not telling us we needed it in advance. They had us booked in and our room ready but wouldn’t give it to us after a long day travelling until I emailed this hotel voucher off the travel agent. Never heard anything like it. 3. They don’t tell you about parking online as that’s 7.50 a day. And if you wanted to reserve it advance don’t bother as they ignore messages. It was full when we got there. Luckily there were spaces for free on the road outside. 4. I wasn’t told about a holiday tax per night per person that was just introduced. I booked in December when it wasn’t in effect so I got stung by that. 5. They charged me for ice to take to my room. Again I’ve never heard of anything like it. 6. The double bed is actually 2 singles pushed together so you end up just sleeping apart. 7. The maid will without fail turn your air con off or pull your card out so your air con turns off. Glasses/mugs never got replaced when used 8. The bathroom is let down to feel like a public toilet as the soap and toilet roll is in dispensers like we can’t be trusted. So when you’re out you’re out. Overall could have been an amazing hotel but let down by cheaping out. It wouldn’t cost much to do the little things that make a difference.

Vor 20 Jahren hatten wir bereits einen Aufenthalt in diesem Hotel erlebt, der damals sehr zufriedenstellend und äußerst entspannend war. Die Ausstattung war ebenfalls in gutem Zustand. Leider hat sich seit unserem letzten Besuch vor zwei Jahrzehnten wenig verändert. Die Handtücher, die wir vor 20 Jahren schon einmal genutzt hatten, waren immer noch im Gebrauch und zeigten deutliche Verschleißerscheinungen, sogar Ränder waren aufgelöst. Bei unserer Ankunft wurden wir gleich darauf hingewiesen, die Poolhandtücher öfter zu verwenden, was uns etwas befremdlich vorkam. Trotzdem haben wir nach vier Tagen die Zimmerhandtücher auf den Boden gelegt, in der Hoffnung, dass sie ausgetauscht werden. Leider geschah dies nicht. Ein weiterer Punkt, der uns enttäuschte. Außerdem ist vor den Zimmern eine neue Straße gebaut worden, wodurch wir den Eindruck hatten, als würden die Fahrzeuge direkt durch unser Zimmer fahren. Besonders in den Nächten zwischen 1 und 4 Uhr waren viele Jugendliche mit lauten Motorrädern und Autos ohne Schalldämpfer unterwegs, was zu schlaflosen Nächten führte. Am nächsten Morgen entdeckten wir sogar Kreise, die von den Hinterrädern der Fahrzeuge gezeichnet wurden. Ein wichtiger Tipp bei der Auswahl eines Hotels: Achten Sie immer darauf, dass keine Straße vor dem Hotel verläuft, selbst wenn es einen Meerblick bietet. Der zweite Punkt geht nur aufgrund des ausgesprochen netten Personals an das Hotel. ************ Twenty years ago, we had already experienced a stay at this hotel, which was very satisfying and extremely relaxing at that time. The facilities were also in good condition. Unfortunately, little has changed since our last visit two decades ago. The towels we had used twenty years ago were still in use and showed clear signs of wear and tear, with even the edges being frayed. Upon our arrival, we were immediately advised to use the pool towels more frequently, which struck us as somewhat strange. Nevertheless, after four days, we placed the room towels on the floor in the hope that they would be replaced. Unfortunately, this did not happen, which was another disappointment. Furthermore, a new road has been built in front of the rooms, giving us the impression that vehicles were driving right through our room. Especially during the nights between 1 and 4 am, many young people on loud motorcycles and cars without mufflers were causing sleepless nights. The next morning, we even discovered circles drawn by the rear wheels of the vehicles. An important tip when choosing a hotel: always make sure that there is no road in front of the hotel, even if it offers a sea view. The second point is awarded solely due to the exceptionally friendly staff at the hotel.

Returned yesterday after a weeks holiday. This hotel has many fantastic qualities but unfortunately the rooms leave a lot to be desired. Check in was very straightforward and all of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious with a large balcony and a lovely view. However the room itself felt very dated and neglected. The carpet was very worn and had many areas which had been scrubbed so much the pattern had disappeared. The sealant around the bath was black in many places, and the shower over the bath was temperamental. The wardrobe doors are in desperate need of soft closing hinges as they shut with a huge clatter and they had dirty finger marks in them. The mattresses were hard and uncomfortable. On the plus side, the room was cleaned every day, the aircon was excellent, and the shower water pressure was decent. The pool area was lovely. 2 large pools, a hot tub, and a kiddie pool. Loads of sunbeds and parasols. Pool bar was great, lovely staff and good range of drinks. The all inclusive meals were decent if a bit repetitive. Lovely breakfast, fresh salads and fruit at lunch and dinner. The hot food choices were diverse and tasty with theme nights going on. The all inclusive drinks were done super well. There were pumps at various points throughout the hotel to help yourself to beer, wine, and soft drinks, as well as water and tea / coffee. This is something I hadn’t encountered before and think it’s a brilliant way to save a whole lot of queueing. We went to both speciality restaurants and found the Italian one poor but the Madeiran was lovely. The hotel runs a courtesy shuttle bus into town twice a day which we used with no issues. The best thing we loved about pestana Royal was the garden area. It’s beautifully kept and had such a variety of gorgeous plants and trees. We enjoyed sitting there in the evening with a few drinks after dinner. We’d honestly love to go back but only after the rooms have had a refurbishment

The location is relatively biased, away from the central area, but the bus and airport bus can arrive, most of the hotels are old people, rooms, corridors, swimming pools are barrier-free. Not suitable for lone or young people.

Lovely hotel, very clean, good size light and airy room, staff fantastic and so friendly and welcoming, food great. Lovely swimming pool and gardens. Shuttle bus into Funchal and back on weekdays. Public bus available others. Hotel will book you trips out and can provide a packed lunch if necessary. This is not your average high rise impersonal hotel. Thoroughly recommend!

This hotel was excellent. There are 1 and 2 star reviews here on TA - I do not recognise the picture in these reviews - all I can say is that the more spelling mistakes I see in a review, the less I value it. (I mean - you expect the hotel to be so perfect in every respect, the least you could do is exercise the same level of care and attention in your review. How can you expect high standards elsewhere when you don't hold yourself to the same level?) From the moment we walked in we felt welcome. The check-in was very simple and efficient. We arrived quite late, and they'd thought to have a tray of cold food sent up to our room for us. Thank you! There is an underground car-park free for guests (useful with a hire car) and whilst we were there it was not too busy at any point. The Wifi is easy to connect to and pretty fast. It did tend to drop out quite a bit when in the main bar area, but otherwise it was problem-free. The pools and areas are excellent - perhaps it would be nice to have one of the outdoor pools slightly heated - they could be cold. The little gym is fine - like most hotel gyms its not exactly a full health-club, but it allows you to keep up most of your workout routine. Restaurants - really good. The buffet for breakfast and evening meal was excellent - very well presented, maintained, and huge choice. That includes for vegetarians, with the slight caveat that it would have been nice to have vegetarian hot main meals for dinner, although with the very wide salad range, no-one is short of choice. The three special restaurants (Madeiran, Italian, and Moroccan) were also great, and although you have to book in advance, there's no limitation on how many times you can go. Vegetarians here generally have to ask, but then there are plenty of options. The staff in all the restaurants were particularly friendly and good at what they do. The room was nice, and comfortable. We had a double room with an extra bed (to make it a family room) - perhaps it was a little small for that given that it is a 5-star, but it was by no means cramped and if you were just a couple in that, then you'd be fine. The room housekeeping was good. A small criticism is that although there was a leaflet saying that soft drinks in the minibar would be replaced (for free) this wasn't done - I don't know if we needed to specifically ask. It wasn't a problem for us (or we would have asked) but it would be nice to have had that happen automatically. Point of criticism - we seemed to spend a little longer waiting for lifts than would be ideal - there seemed to be one lift out of operation although no signage to that effect, and the lifts were a little under-sized - quite cramped when more than three people were in. In many ways the experience of a hotel like this can be affected by the number of people, and while we were here, it didn't seem overly full - perfect for us but may not always be like that. After a 4 hour flight we were taken to this hotel which is about a 45 min stroll on the promenade to Funchal. There was a courtesy bus but not needed. Opposite the hotel is a mall with supermarket, clothes stores and eateries. The newsagent sells Giro cards for the buses. For €5 daily you can use the public transport for as many trips as you like. Simple load the card. You pay extra for the suburban ticket that takes you farther. In the opposite direction, again a 45-1 hour walk, you arrive at the fishing village. We caught a taxi from there up to the skywalk. We walked back down the many stepped corridors through the farms back to the centre. Our knees were wobbly by this time as the descent had taken about an hour. Enjoyed coffee and Bolas on the entire holiday. A ride up the mountain on cable car is well worth it with spectacular views of Funchal. Pick a clear day. The small cafe just near the toboggans provided pan pipe music and delicious cappuccinos as we enjoyed the vista and watched the men in pin*****e suits guiding the toboggans down the steep slopes. We returned by cable car. If its not busy, you can just wait for an empty car and hop in with just your crew. We enjoyed having it to ourselves. A visit to the Ronaldo museum was OK, a bit pricey for the entrance. They should have shown his best goals on a reel but nothing like that. Just saw trophies and pics. The botanical hardens were not in full bloom due to time of year but were pleasant to walk around. There is a museum there too with stuffed animals. A walk through the town is very pleasant. Live bands can be very entertaining on a Saturday afternoon. Hotel room was spacious replete with a mini kitchen,fridge, crockery and cookware. We had the garden view where it was quieter though I couldn't compare. Breakfast had great variety. Many lines. No complaints. The swimming pool was heated and there was a sauna too. Huge towels are provided. There is also an outdoor pool.
