Miðhraun - Lava Resort

Our apartment was not ready when we arrived at around 4pm, we have to wait for about 45 mins. Have to pay to use the hot springs and pay to buy the laundry detergent. The apartment came with a washer but not a dryer.

This was a wonderful place to stay - peaceful, comfortable, and interesting. With sheep in raised pastures in the front, moss-covered lava and a series of creeks and pools in the back, and views of mountains and sea, we could have stayed longer than our two nights. The hot pool is an extra cost but definitely worth it. The restaurant was elegant and delicious and the chef friendly and welcoming -- he even came over to my table to say hello and offer to make something else if I didn't find the vegetarian dish I wanted on the menu (I did, a tofu steak with local vegetables and sauce flavors - yum). You are near enough to the various "attractions" on the Snaefellesnes Peninsula without being in the middle of all the tour buses and such.

We saw the Northern Lights right outside of our cabin. Big hall for breakfast and dinner - felt very Viking. Really liked the hot tub outdoors.

We rented a cottage for two nights. The cottage was cheaply furnished but clean. The staff was very nice, so based on the accomdations, I would have given them a 4 or a five. However, I was very dissapointed in the breakfast and dinner which I would have rated a 2 or 3. I could not find the resort's restaurant , Hladan on trip advisor, so I lumped the hotel and dinnning room together for a 3 . They serve breakfast starting late at 8:00AM. Everything other place that I have been to in Iceland started breakfast at 7:00AM so you can get an early start. The first morning everything was ready at 8:00AM. However the second morning at 8:00 they were still putting food out and by the time we left at 8:30AM they still had not put everything out. Dinner was a joke as it was so limited. The first night they only had one appetizer, which was a soup ,and two entrees, a fish dish and a lamb dish. This was one of the mosty expensive dinners on our 12 day Icelandic trip. However, the quality was average. The next night we were told that it was essentially the same limited menu, so we ate elsewhere. The resort advertizes a dinner buffet, but I am not sure how often they have it, since it was not offered the two nights we stayed there.

We stayed one night in a private family cottage that comfortably slept 6 of us. It was very nice, spacious, and comfortable. The restaurant is in a separate building that has a very warm and charming atmosphere, and dinner was the best we had during our entire trip. The staff were all very friendly, and the chef came out to say hello. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and our stay, and can’t wait to return.
