Motel One Freiburg

The lady at check-in was very friendly and managed to find me a quiet room, just as I'd requested. She also recommended some late-night food spots, which was really helpful. The room itself was basic but very clean. They only provide one bottle of water for your entire stay, so you might need to buy more from nearby, but this was a minor inconvenience considering the hotel’s lower price compared to others. It also would have been nice to have access to a hot drink, even if it was from a communal area. As I need my morning coffee, I discovered a fantastic café across the road that serves delicious Vietnamese coffee - a nice surprise in Freiburg! I appreciated that the windows opened, allowing fresh air in, which meant I didn't need to use the air conditioner and the room stayed at a comfortable temperature. The bed was clean and comfortable, and the shower had good water pressure. My only minor gripe was with the TV. While it was a premium brand (Loewe), the HDMI port on the side was disabled, and the one on the back, which you can't physically reach, was the only one available to select. When I asked about this, they said it was by design, which I found quite odd - why have the option to select an external input at all? You can cast with an Android device (not with iPhones), but this didn't work well for me. With most channels being in German except for a few news ones, it would have been nice to plug in my phone via HDMI and stream something.

No words... non empathetic non existing customer service. We arrived from Munich Dec 21st, only staying one night, unpacked all our gifts (approx 10-15 bags), booked two rooms (we have always a big fan of the Motel One Chain), we brought all the bags upstairs into our room, the next morning at 7 am went down to check out, have breakfast. My husband was busy loading all bags into the car. The bags contained high value items. Dec 22nd to the Dec 23 we spendt in Switzerland. Upon our return to Munich Dec 23rd in the afternoon we realised that two bags were missing. We then immediatley inquired if the bags were found. Nothing. I then asked for the recording of the security camera. The hotel informed us that all data is being deleted after three days. So, Dear Motel One, we are in a dilemma. We would love to continue to talk in a positive way about your hotel and use it in the future. How can you help us to do that? The minimum would be to offer free drinks, a dinner for two (which does not cost you anything, let us be clear here). The value stolen at your property amounts to 2000 Euro. I had emailed you. My husband had emailed you. Perhaps you had suggest a refund of the two rooms as a gesture of goodwill which I have not seen.. my mistake then.. we are still waiting to hear from you... once the matter is settled in a positive way... we are happy to write a positive review... waiting.... so far no apologies.. no offer how to balance this experience out....

I've stayed at a few Motel Ones and one thing they seem to get right is a consistent experience, which is just enough not to be low cost but also enough that you don't mess your budget up. I think anyone expecting space and luxury should look elsewhere, this hotel is designed for a place to sleep, get things done and get out there. The beds are comfortable, WiFi is on point, TV does what it needs to and the bathroom and bedroom space although small is adequate for a solo traveller, couples may struggle as it's a tight fit. It's also right on top of the city centre and not far from the train/bus station, breakfast is the usual European cold cuts with coffee/tea plus cereals, but local food is so nearby that you might want to opt for that instead, it can also get very busy on later breakfast times. I'd ignore a couple of reviewers here who only have posted 1 or 2 contributions and aren't regular users of TripAdvisor but other regular TA users have commended how good it is, of which I agree. I loved and enjoyed both my stays here, and it's comfortable and does the job. Consistent as always Motel One.

Put simply, you literally don't get much for your money here. The rooms are tiny! If there are 2 of you, with bags, you will literally be falling over each other and climbing over bags and squeezing between the bed and the TV on the wall to get past. Not my thing at all. I might have expected such a small room in a big city, but Freiburg isn't exactly a thriving metropolis and short of space! Even breakfast was taken at the bar and sitting where ever you can find a chair, whether that is in the bar on a lounger, or on a rocker in the lobby. Not really comfortable and there was no hot food either. An expensive breakfast considering where you were eating it. The hotel also boasts parking, but there was none available when we got there and I couldn't even see how you drove in there, even if we could! You'd be driving round the block a few times and still won't see it?! Overall, this is a quirky use of space, but they have crammed a lot into this hotel and it simply didn't work for me. I just wanted to escape after a night in this place.
