Booked a table to celebrate a birthday whilst we were in the area.Other than the good service provided by the young guy who seemed to be doing everything front of house, the meal was at best, below average. Poor quality, very narrow menu selection and ONE (poor) vegetarian option. We wished we hadnt bothered (yet we stil paid the 10% included gratuity on the bill as the service by the young waiter/barman was excellent).

It started well enough, young man at Reception gave me a hand up to my room, which was spacious enough if a little old-fashioned, the plastic flowers in the window boxes set the scene. Bathrooms clean even though the shower was a little ineffective. However, the true horror story started at dinner :I had chosen the restaurant as it advertised itself as a sea food restaurant, with fresh fish delivered daily as a selling feature. however the menu contained the ubiquitous fish and chips, or a fresh spaghetti with mussels which I chose. This was disappointing to say the least: the mussels were fresh, but there were only seven of them which for a main course was ridiculous. The spaghetti could’ve been fresh, I couldn’t tell , the sauce was non-descript. however the full horror stories of the kitchen were reserved for breakfast. Scotland normally does breakfast very well if a little unhealtily. The porridge was microwaved the pre batch cooked warm items were maintained in a “ warm Cabinets ” and consisted of pink non-descript sausages overcooked bacon the colour and texture of old cardboard and congealed poached eggs which had been batch cooked sometime before even though breakfast had only been open a few minutes. The bread on offer was the usual square white or brown and the toaster seemed to be on go slow low productivity strike. This was accompanied by horrendous coffee in true 1970s retro style, dispensed by a Kona coffee machine which tasted as though it had been stewed since 1970. It is unbelievable that establishments can still be so out of touch with modern tastes in both tea and coffee ,On the bright side, the hotel was warm and clean, the bar was friendly and there was a good range of beers on option but the SumTotal was miserable and depressing.

The room was warm, the rest so far short of expectation and pricing. The room was small, dated and very uncomfortable. The walls were super thin so every noise from the adjoining rooms could be heard. Anytime water was run in another room it sounded as if there was a waterfall in ours, doors banging at all hours., bar noise etc. The place smelt terrible and the breakfast which had to be ordered in advance for a specific time was an almost empty half warm buffet. This really was a super disappointing stay worth at best a quarter of the price we paid. The restaurant menu was so random we ate elsewhere, (Myrtle bank hotel) should have stayed there too!

A lovely night spent here on business. The welcome was friendly and staff were extremely helpful. The venison steak was very good. Although this early in the season and the hotel was quiet nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Very comfortable room. Couldn’t ask any more from both Andy and Conner.

Only came in for dinner because most of the restaurants in the area are closed on Monday (and Tuesday) outside the holiday season. Limited menu, but friendly service and the food was alright. A simple tomato soup and scampi and chips. And an excellent IPA on draught. Around £30 to £35 for appetizer, main and a drink. In this remote area of the world with limited options this is considered reasonable.

Staff ignored us and when she did speak she was curt and extremely dismissive to the point that I wanted to walk out there and then. The young blonde member of staff had no pleasantries of manner about her at all The he older chap in the bar just didn't speak or acknowledge us at all and simply turned his back on us and walked off. I will not be going back to this place any time soon and could not possibly recommend it to anyone.

Location great, food great, plenty to do around the village, if you wanted to walk, fish, or just relax. Breakfast was a full selection of whatever you wanted. Evening meals had a good atmosphere. Staff were helpful and friendly. Wallpaper was a bit dodgy though.
