Premier Inns are our default hotels when a short stay is required. We usually find them comfortable, clean and friendly. Unfortunately, our stay at Grantham only provided the first of these things. We were booked in for a one night stay prior to going to a funeral. Reception service was efficient enough, but we were not treated to a smile for the whole trip. In the restaurant this might have been because the staff were stretched - at least another two people were needed. As a result, it took an hour and a half to get two unimpressive and lukewarm mains and two puddings. We were given a family room, even though we are well past retiring age. The bedding was white and crisp a long time ago. With that and the extra beds the feeling was that of sleeping in a hostel. We are always grateful for the cleanliness in a Premier Inn. In this instance, after reluctantly withdrawing a hair and its accompanying string of gloop from the sink overflow I was obliged to clean the same with toilet paper to stop it from overflowing into the sink. The lighting was - and we have found this at many PIs - very gloomy. Again, this did not help with the non-ambience of the room.
