The Compasses is in a rural location and you would need a car. The rooms are external linked together, only about 5 Each room has unique decoration - mine sort of Mediterranean it had furniture ‘distressed repurposed’ sort quaint. The bathroom had a good shower and was average size. Unusually underfloor heating. The bed was comfy and had enough pillows / cushions. It is attached to the pub that did very nice meals at reasonable prices and excellent beer. The inside the pub was rustic ! And well frequented by dinners and drinkers ! I did not gave breakfast. The minus points - no ironing board, they might have been one available but trying get the bar staff attention could have been difficult. The car park was very busy during the evening with pub goers I would be helpful if some reserved for accommodation guest.

We had an overnight stay here on our way to Norfolk. Lovely country pub, excellent food, friendly and helpful staff. Our room was 'old bob' which was large, airy, clean and very comfortable. Accessible shower which was ideal for us. Plenty of beers and ciders to choose from. Would definitely stay again when in the area.

We had difficulty finding the pub but had expected that so not a problem . The atmosphere of the pub is fantastic , a proper Essex pub with lots of memorabilia , wooden floors and benches as well as more garden areas . Some bar staff were not welcoming , no one made eye contact with us for about 4 minutes as we waited at the bar when we first arrived ☹️. My sister and I both had the liver and bacon . Lots of veg which were stone cold . They took the plates back but on return the meal was not improved after microwaving ! The veg were warm but liver then tough and bacon over cooked . Beer was really good though . Overall we were disappointed and had to pay cash into the bargain as card machine was not working . I would go back again to give them another chance as I loved the Essex atmosphere of the pub and the beer but reserve judgement on the food . X

The pub is great and good for a conversation and as a social venue after a walk. It is relaxing and friendly. Just be aware the toilets are outside, so be prepared in the winter to visit the nice container toilets. I would recommend to any person anytime and I cannot wait to go back very very good

We stayed here in a bedroom in the mews while attending a family wedding at Leez Abbey. Breakfast, illustrated, and lunch were excellent. There were interesting local walks and both cyclists and classic car groups came. If you are near London but want to feel in the country, come here. It is not on a main road so you will need satnav or maps.

This is a classic coaching inn; we stayed there while attending a wedding at Leez Abbey. It is off the main road with rooms in the old stables, a real ale bar and solid breakfast and lunch available. The staff were as helpful as other reviews suggest and we would go there again

Spontaneous visit to somewhere off the beaten track on our return from stansted airport. Pretty little pub with some tables outside. Inside is quirky and old fashioned benches and tables. Good selection of local beers and ciders. Varied menu, we didn’t try the huffers but they did look very nice. Instead we had the pie and the vegetable and Stilton tart. Both were god although not a massive portion. Really busy on the Sunday we visited. A group of Morris dancers gave a great performance outside
