Red Roof Inn & Suites Cincinnati North - Mason

RedRoof had always been our go-to hotel for consistency. They are usually well-maintained and clean. I don't know WHAT is going on with this place though... First off, the evening staff at the front desk was very helpful and friendly. That was about the only good part. Once we made it around to our parking area, we parked next to a 30-year-old abandoned truck stuffed with garbage. Even the driver's seat was full, so it's obvious it's not being driven. As we made our way toward the building, it was concerning that the outside door to the corridor has a swipe-lock, but it was not operational, and the door stayed unlocked. Nice security. Once inside, the smell of vape, cigarettes and **** permeated the hallways. I was passed by a man carrying a large clothes hamper on his way to the laundry. I assume he lives there. Once we got to our room, I could see down the hall that garbage cans and bags of trash were stacked in the hallway (I assume from more people who live there). I also noticed TONS of dog hair along the hallway carpet. I wasn't even looking for it. It just was that dirty that it caught my eye. I could hear kids screaming and dogs barking already, the walls were that thin. Once inside the room, we noticed how poorly maintained it was. The lampshade was broken, the tiles had months of dirt buildup along the edges, the toilet seat had cigarette burns, and the commode itself was so loose I thought it would fall over. The bathtub had hair and bits of debris in it. I turned on the faucet (which, along with the spout, moved in and out of the wall about an inch when touched), but the tub just filled up and swirled the debris around, taking several minutes to drain, leaving even more debris behind. So we couldn't use the tub. I'm not going to stand in ankle-deep dirty water with somebody else's hair. The mattress was completely flat in the middle. It was like sleeping in a hammock. My wife and I had to stick pillows under our sides like wheel-chocks to keep from rolling into the middle. The walls and floors are extremely thin. We could hear EVERYTHING going on beside us and above us. We could even hear the upstairs dog walking around as if it was in our room! Plus people slamming doors all night, screaming in the hallways, making every dog in the building bark in unison... Like I said- RedRoof is usually a solid choice. But NOT THIS ONE. It is VERY poorly cleaned and maintained. We were only there for one night, and I bet most people wouldn't have even made it that long.

Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza

I was hesitant about booking this hotel based on lots of negative reviews but we really enjoyed our time here. We had no issues with check in or check out and hotel stored our luggage our last day since we had a late flight. Booked months ago when we found a cheap flight to Cincinnati for a long weekend. Used Hilton honors points (50000 per night) since the rates were thru the roof expensive. We had no idea it was the weekend of BLINK and no idea what BLINK even was so we kind of swerved into a really fun, activity packed setting. Hotel location is 10/10. We walked north as far as Rhinegeist Brewing and Findlay Market and south thru the banks area, across the purple pedestrian bridge into Kentucky. The free trolley was circulating throughout the area; we just didn’t chance on it when we were headed places. Took the cheap $1.50 2X airporter bus to and from CVG. The stop is very close to the hotel so very manageable and a fraction of the cost of an Uber. We did receive an upgrade to a large corner room on the 29th floor which was nice and roomy with views over Fountain Square, Washington Park, the river etc. fall colors were beautiful. Yes, room could use some TLC. Ledge on one side window was falling apart from the wall. Towels were thin. I probably would have been disappointed had I spent premium rate price $350-400 a night. Bar is gorgeous, service was attentive, nice beer selection, fun live musicians each night we were there (Friday and Saturday). Bar offered a happy hour from 4-6 the Friday we were there. $5 drafts. I asked about breakfast and learned buffet is $24:95 per person. We chose to eat at the nearby Hathaways Diner for far less. I’d stay again if the price was right.
