Hotel San Giovanni Terme

The title summarises 2 of the 3 main assets of this hotel. The other one is the staff - very helpful, even though they speak little English, they make an effort to understand you. Room cleaning was very good too. Breakfast buffet was ok. With regards to the pool, don't let the oxide stains in the bottom put you off. When you get in, water is LOVELY. What a rest for sore muscles and aching joints... simply marvellous. There are two "taps" that feed hot water to the pool constantly. Water comes out of them VERY hot in the mornings (don't put yourself directly under the stream), util around 10:30 am, when water starts coming out warm but not hot. Overall the pool temperature stayed around 32 - 33 degrees Celsius. Reasons why I'm giving two stars: 1) air conditioning - sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. You couldn't turn it on or off in the room. It's set up externally to turn on at a certain time and turn itself off at another certain time. You can do nothing about it. It stops cooling the room in early mornig hours and as I result I often woke up feeling hot. Bad air conditioning contributed to poor sleeping. 2) atrocious Wi-Fi. Tried to upload a picture, when in the pool area, gave up after 15 min. I asked staff at reception desk about the wifi and the answer was that it was slow because a lot of people were using it. Absolute rubbish answer. It translates to me as "we know and we can't be bothered to do anything about it". 3) water bottles in the minifridge in your room is not complimentary. They will charge you for it and there's no warning of that during your stay. It's not said to you on arrival, it's not written in the information sheet you are given when you arrive. When you check out is when you find out. Together with the city tax which is around 40 €. 4) Mattresses were ok but to put 2 single beds together to make a double bed is something that I don't like at all. Breakfast buffet was ok. You can order omelette if you want. There's plenty of pastry and bakery stuff, jams, cake; there's also youghourt, boiled eggs, tomatoes, selection of cold meats and cheeses. Coffee is good and they serve you plenty of it. There's no room service. You cannot have food brought to your room.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The hotel is well situated, has a lovely pool area and gardens and is clean and inviting. It is a nice hotel with few frills but the service at the hotel from the serving staff to reception and house keeping is exceptional. The staff work very hard and although very few speak english do everything to ensure you have an enjoyable stay and personal service. Everything runs like clockwork. The only reason i am not giving 5 stars is there were a few tiles missing in the bathroom, there was no complimentary water in the room, you had to pay for what you used and there were no coffee/tea making facilities which was disappointing. We had rain showers the day before we left and had to buy umbrellas, most good hotels provide these for guests to loan which would have been beneficial. Overall though good hotel, we would definitely return given the chance.
