It is relatively remote here, there are no people, mainly to see bathing and new construction in 2024. The service was good, especially the little girl ran upstairs and downstairs several times to take us to see the room, but each room smelled of smoke. Finally, I found a lighter one. The result was still a cough of bedding. Because the first floor bathed, there was almost no water on the second floor. I couldn’t take a bath. I had to wash it and go downstairs. It was free. Shower 12. The toilet room was almost hygienic, so I made do for one night. The layout of the room is the same as the hotel map.

GGuest UserThis is truly a hidden gem in Pingyao Ancient Town. The facilities and service are comparable to, or even better than, a major hotel! Be sure to book in advance if you're planning on a holiday! The owner added contact information and sent us information about the location, parking, and even provided pick-up and drop-off services. So thoughtful! During check-in, he patiently explained the key attractions in the ancient city and recommended great restaurants! If you're looking to take photos of the ”young wives” of Shanxi merchants, this is a must-do! The free outdoor locations are fantastic! The amenities provided in the room are all disposable and clean! The toilet water heater is also a reputable brand, so there's no need to worry about safety issues! Highly recommended to anyone staying in Pingyao!
GGuest UserThis is a cosy hotel converted from a scholar’s academy. It really feels like you’ve gone back in time or stepped onto a Chinese drama set. The staff are wonderful, very friendly, helpful and kind, explaining how to navigate their little town and helping us book tickets to a show. When my payment app couldn’t work upon check in, they let us pay later in the day with a credit card. The breakfast is tasty and fills the tummy, and you can ask for refills. I had the best sleep here, as it’s set on a quiet street, a little off the main drag and the rooms were clean and spacious, with comfortable beds, everything worked and there was attention to details like a snack basket and bottled water in the fridge. And the car was there to pick us up from Pingyao Gu Cheng station and also to send us back to the station. It was a lovely stay.
NNihaNicOntheGoThis hotel is not to miss, it is very beautiful with traditional style. We stayed in a beautiful room with the traditional Kang Bed (which was much more
Comfortable than we thought actually), it was totally quiet at night and thanks to blackout curtain we didn’t wake up too early. The owner offered us a bottle of vinegar and he also wanted to take us to the train station for free. Actually we booked another hotel with a “normal” bed for the other days in Pingyao but we regretted a lot. We paid much more to struggle sleeping because of nonsense modernities of the other hotel with intelligent amenities making noise and light in the room. So, it is much better to keep your budget and stay in this perfect hotel. The only “downside” is the toilet without wet/dry separation but honestly at the price you pay to stay in a great place like this, it’s totally ok.
GGuest UserExcellent value for money! It truly felt like stepping back in time. Sitting in the courtyard really added to the atmosphere, making me feel like a pampered lady. The front desk staff were also incredibly warm and welcoming, eager to share all their knowledge and answer any questions!
SSimpleTravelerGreat place in Pingyao. It is reasonably priced, a bit out of the very center (meaning also out of tourists crowds that can be quite noisy in the evenings and mornings), but still close, has same old-style design as the more popular and well-established places that cater to foreigners, but priced twice as much. Pick-up and drop off service is provided - just contact the hotel in advance via phone using the reception of tour previous hotel - no one speaks English - it will solve your communication issue if you do not speak Chinese. At the place itself everyone is very eager to help - use your phone app to translate. Onwer helped me to buy tickets to Pingyao attractions and Terracota Army as I was heading to Xian next (available only through WeChat Pay that is in turn is not availablefor foreign tourists as of April 2023). If you go to Shuanglin temple, be sure to ask to buy tickets through WeChat for you as well. I was able to buy physical one by pure compassion of local guard who asked the staff to open ticket office just for me (Probably was the only foreigner in Pingyao at a time). Please also note that as of April 2023, the reconstruction works in the historical city parts are continuing, so, large chunks of the city within the walls are not looking as great as it could have been. The very center of the city is mostly untouched though and you can still come and explore. If going in spring, be prepared for the temperature swings. I got a temperature drop from 28C to 3C within 2 days by the moment I got to Pingyao. It was even snowing at night.
GGuest UserFirst of all: the owners get a 10/10. they are an old couple, super sweet and try to give you the best stay as possible. They cannot speak English which led to a laughing moment as they where translating Chinese into Spanish which we cannot speak.
A few things to consider: the rooms are small which is usually super okay for us. We don’t need much room and price as well as location was great. It still became a bit of an issue in our situation as it was pouring rain and the rooms is directly entered from the outside area. There is no space to leave wet shoes outside or much space to hang wet clothes. So this might not be an issue if you visit in summer. It really depends an is an subjective view.
The reason for a lower rating of cleanliness is, that the first room, they gave us, was spelling so bad that the first thought was „good that we only stay for one night“ and the second „how will we be able to get this out of our clothes“. We are backpackers…
After we when through the old town, we came back and the lady must have noticed our discomfort and asked if we would like to change the room. We did so as the second room was still smelling a bid old but totally acceptable for the ancient building. The room was much better even though there was still dust on some of the desks so we wipes it first before putting stuff on it.
Again, 10/10 for the kind and friendly hosts. On a sunny day, the experience might have been positive on all the topics but we have to be honest…
AAnonymous UserThe homestay is directly in the old town with all of the attractions in walking distance. As an unexpected surprise I was picked up from the train station and offered to get brought back. In general the service has been above and beyond helping me to find my way around to the sights I wanted to see. The included breakfast was also delicious with a choice of different local dishes. The room in ancient style was clean and had all the modern amenities. The highlight was the courtyard and the view from one of the higher floors.
DDizzerIf you want a more authentic experience than staying in a fancy hotel, this is your place. Mrs Liu (sp?) was so lovely and helpful. She speaks a bit of English and is very fast on the translation apps for what she doesn’t know. She gave us a map of the Ancient City and explained where we should visit. Every day she gave us water bottles. We stayed 2 nights.
You can experience a kang bed here, in a cozy room in a quaint courtyard. It was quite firm but still comfortable. There is air con which was needed when we were there. The bathroom is small but we found that everything didn’t get wet, despite the small size of the room.
The inn is on the “taxi-bus” route just off South Street. As it is a block from the Main Street it is significantly quieter as the honking of “taxi-buses” doesn’t happen as much in the alleyways. Just be careful to walk on the sides of the road as the mopeds and taxi-buses are electric so quiet, except for the honking which is loud and constant, and they drive quite fast for the size and busyness of the streets.
There is plenty of food places just a short walk away from the hotel. The ancient city was a lot more touristy than we had expected.
You need to prearrange with the innkeeper to organise a “taxi-bus” to pick you up from the South Gate. Regular cars are not allowed inside the city wall. We were dropped by the DiDi but it is too far and busy to walk with luggage to the inn. Mrs Liu and her husband helped us out with their mopeds.
Not many “taxi-bus” drivers know the inn as it is a smaller private hotel, so make sure you have the address printed out to show them. The taxi-bus is 10RMB pp per ride and you can flag them down anywhere on the streets they are allowed on, but they may not want to go where you want to go, so just flag another one until you get one that agrees. You scan the drivers QR code to pay.
Overall we enjoyed our stay at Pingyao Yunshu Inn.
GGuest UserWe stayed at thos lovely hotel. Lovingly restored by the current owner Mr Wang. He is the 6th generation owner of the property.
Until 10 years ago it was a derelict and dilapidated building. He poured money, time, blood, sweat and tears to restore it
And it does feel and look like a traditional house.
You feel you are going back in time.
Firstly the customer service is way beyond the call of duty. Its so good, i would recommend staying with mr Wang at whatever hotel he runs.
He picked us at the Lower East Gate, and brought us to the hotel, then took nearly half an hour to explain in great detail where we need to visit, whether the sights be in the city or outside the city.
Some of his suggestions, not on the tour books were very good . For example he suggested 3 restaurants, and we avoided them thinking he was getting a kickback.on our 4th and last day we tried restaurant no 2 of his. And it was good , the food and service were good. The prices were average with other restaurants and we got a 10% discount being the hotel's guests. And remember we had eaten 10 meals by the time we came to his suggestions.
Another suggestion of Mr Wang was Ma family home - also a very good tip from him.
Everytime we had a request or question he always responded with enthusiasm.
On our last day we checked out at 4am and he still took us to the pick up point at that ungodly hour.
Yep Mr and Mrs Wang's customer service is just first class.
The room was large, queen deluxe double, and the furnishings were traditional chinese furniture made of Rosewood. Very Expensive furniture for a hotel room. Shower worked well and was hot. However be aware its chinese style wet floor system ie there is no shower curtain between the shower and a small part of the bathroom does get wet if youare not careful. MR Wang said it will be one his improvement on his priority list. Hopefully by the time you booked the problem will have been resolved
The hotel is very close to the main streets. About 5 min walk.
The city of pingyao is worth visiting, it is one of the very walled cities left in China, with its old buildings intact and people still living it. All the city walls are also intact. Magnificent at night.
MM20341****A very unique courtyard B&B inn. The rooms are clean, tidy and antique. The inn is located on the West Street of the Old City. It is right on the pedestrian street. It is very close to the Rishengchang Bank and the county government. The boss is very enthusiastic and the service is very good. I will give you a tip in advance. We sent location navigation and helped us pick up and drop off our luggage from the parking lot 🅿️. They introduced the ancient city travel suggestions in detail and arranged an ancient city guide for us to have an in-depth understanding of Pingyao’s historical and cultural heritage. It was great [strong][strong ] [Strong] When checking out, the boss also gave me a souvenir from the ancient city - aged vinegar, which is very nice and worth recommending [Strong] [Strong] [Strong]
