The Good The standout feature of The Coffee Bungalow is undoubtedly its staff, particularly Adrian, who went above and beyond to ensure our stay was enjoyable. Everyone we encountered was attentive and genuinely warm, making us feel well cared for. The food was another highlight—delicious and thoughtfully prepared. A particularly nice touch was when they packed us a complimentary to-go lunch for our train journey out of Kandy, which was a pleasant and unexpected gesture. The Bad The lack of air conditioning was a notable downside, especially given Kandy’s humidity. While the property has a charming colonial feel, the absence of a solid door between the bedroom and bathroom was an odd design choice. Although the toilet and shower do have louvered doors, privacy is somewhat compromised. Another issue was the challenging entry system—we found ourselves locked out one night, which was frustrating and inconvenient. The Ugly Unfortunately, the biggest drawback was the ant problem. While some level of bugs is to be expected in a tropical setting, the sheer number of ants, particularly in the bathroom but also in the bedroom, was hard to ignore. It definitely impacted our overall comfort. Overall, The Coffee Bungalow has a lot of charm and some truly wonderful hospitality, but there are a few quirks and inconveniences that might not suit every traveler. If you’re prepared for a bit of rustic charm and can handle the lack of AC and privacy, the warm service and great food may make up for the downsides.

A hidden gem above the city of Kandy. Had the absolute pleasure of staying here for 3 nights. A beautiful colony style boutique hotel nestled amongst a previous coffee plantation on the hill above Kandy. A panoramic view of the city, made even more fabulous from the infinity pool. The detail in the house is beautiful, a true colonial feel. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner Thusitha who together with his team enhanced our stay. A special thanks to Adrian who looked after us personally. Thank you Coffee Bungalow for great memories.

The view from this hotel is its crowning glory. A small boutique hotel with attentive staff. The complimentary high tea was really special, and the infinity pool a welcome treat after a long day touring the cultural sites of Kandy. The breakfast was lovely, the ambience at dinner wasn't for us but the food was tasty.

A beautiful hotel, more like a colonial home. Stunning views and exceptional accommodation. It’s so relaxing with truly attentive service. Highly recommend dinner, ignore other reviews regarding prices, you get what you pay for. We had a fabulous time.

My wife and I stayed in this stunning, colonial plantation style bungalow, as our base for exploring Kandy. It is perched on the hillside overlooking Kandy, with sublime views across the valley and easy access to the city by car. Our room was very large, clean and well appointed, with a very comfortable bed. The staff were extremely attentive and hospitable and we were treated more like house guests than paying clients. We stayed on B&B basis, and our breakfast was excellent. One has the option of also having dinner, which we chose to do, having been shown the evening's menu, which is a set menu of 1 option for each of the 3 courses. A limited choice of cocktails, wine and beer is also offered. The food was good, but very pricy for what was being served. The 3 course meal was 40USD per person and a cocktail (using the local arrack liquor) was 12USD and a local beer 7USD. I don't think we realised how expensive this was until we looked back on what our dining costs had been in other lodgings. Our dinner and drinks here were over twice the cost of equivalent in all the other hotels and lodges we stayed in Sri Lanka, which had extensive menus offering a number of choices. So we would recommend this lodge highly for B&B, but suggest that guests consider going into Kandy for dinner, which would require a short taxi ride but offer much better choice and value for money

We left a piece of our hearts in Kandy, at the Coffee Bungalow to be precise. Although we stayed only for one night (too short!), we were pampered by the warmth of the owners Thusitha and Laleenie and their team. The arabica suite (each room is named after a coffee type) is as charming and unique as it can be a villa with a view on 3 Unesco heritage sites! By no means, the hosts offer an experience that you (surely we!) will remember forever! Giulia and Gabriele

We recently stayed at the Coffee Bungalow in Kandy, Sri Lanka. A very colonial experience in good condition. The service was good and swimming pool a delight. We had dinner there one night, food was fine. We asked for wine list and were offered a white Argentinian wine they had nothing else. A drinkable house wine. I had a can of Lion beer On check out we were outraged. The can on Lion was charged @ US$ 12 crazy. the wine a whopping US$ 75. A top quality bottle of wine in top hotel in Sri Lanka would be no more than US$ 50. This bottle should have been tops US$ 25. The beer US$ 4. Then the card payment machine would not work with 3 cards tried. We finished paying in US$ cash. No option. This hotel, is a rip off on extras. I would Not recommend staying there. It reflects very badly on Sri Lanka. Our private tour guide was also appalled. He would be taking it up with his company. We had pre paid the accommodation, clearly not the extras, which were not priced on any documents before our purchase. We bought in good faith. Caveat Emptor . Buyer Beware… perhaps our own fault for trusting.
