Spanish Dream Hotel

My wife and I stayed at the Spanish Dream Hotel for a week in August and early September 2023. This is a tale of two rooms. Our first night was terrible. Kingston is very hot and humid this time of year, including at night. In our first room, the air conditioning did not work at all. It was a miserable night! In addition, we were greeted by several small cockroaches when we first entered the room, the bathroom sink did not drain, water pressure was very low in the shower, there was no hot water, and the switches were broken on one of the table lamps next to the bed. Beginning the second night, things got much better. The woman at the front desk in the morning seemed not at all sympathetic when I raised some of these issues, but she readily offered to move us to another room. The rest of our stay was far better! The air conditioning worked very well in our second room. The bathroom sink drained. Some of the other issues persisted, but I came to realize that the poor water pressure is a city problem, not just at our hotel. We didn't have hot water as such, but it was sometimes tepid and never unbearably cold. I did see a cockroach on two separate occasions early in the morning (whether it was the same roach seen twice or two roaches, I don't know), but we weren't overrun with them, and it is a tropical climate conducive to such sighting. On the plus side, when we had trouble with our TV, the staff went out of their way to help us ... even bringing a new TV into the room. The woman at the front desk in the afternoon was quite friendly, in fact. I'm really not sure whether to give the Spanish Dream Hotel a 2 or a 3. A 3 is probably too generous. If we had not been given a new room, I couldn't have given it anything but a 1. But getting working air conditioning was key to making the stay much better. And from reviews I have read, it doesn't seem that this hotel is any worse than similar hotels in the same area of Kingston. Still, it says something about the management of this hotel that we had to endure that first room even for one night. The issues had to be obvious to anyone who entered that room. That's why I give it a 2. Would I stay there again? Probably not. But I have tried to be as honest and thorough as possible in this review so that you can decide for yourself.
