Les Cimes du Puy-en-Velay

I think there is s good chance they do not clean sheets or other things well here as I got a bad staphylococci infection on my back requiring strong antibiotic treatment following my stay here. Notice sheets are dark prints so you cannot see if the sheets are clean or not. Although we loved the views but at this price point if you cannot afford to provide large croissants, liquid soap, large bath towels, a very old coffee machine used at breakfast which takes staff 15 minutes to prepare coffee (to ensure less consumption?) etc. PLEASE charge us 5-10 euros more and provide these things. All of the little savings (petites economies) the owner tries to make to make a little more money could be added to the price with little complaint from the customer (customers paying 170-220 euros per night would not mind) As it is, it feels sad they have to do all of these little savings which highlights a type of stinginess and leaves us feeling less than valued.

I made the reservation after having been assured by the owner that I could "easily" reach this location even though I had misgivings. I had pre-paid everything including dinner. When I learned that I would be sharing a table with strangers for that dinner I of course cancelled. Nonetheless I forged on and, after a 350Km drive, arrived at the foot of this very steep hill in the center of town. I asked for the owner to guide me as I was assured that "large delivery vans easily reach the location". To my utter horror I literally drove into a trap. The road became extremely narrow and very steep. There was a traffic light to attempt to regulate traffic around a sharp 90 degree corner. I barely managed to squeeze through only to be faced with incoming traffic that had jumped the light, etc. It took me over thirty minutes to escape from this nightmare. I instantly cancelled of course as I could not even get close to the hotel. I offered a 100 Euro cancellation from my reservation; instead they took 150 Euros! In conclusion, if you drive a donkey or a moped you'll certainly reach this place for the pleasure of climbing up three flights of very steep stairs dragging your own luggage, and for the added delight of paying for dinner with strangers. If that's not quite what you signed up for, avoid Le Puy en Velay entirely, it's too narrow, too small, impossible to park, overrun with the lowest form of tourism, and there isn't a single civilized hotel to stay overnight!

Beautifully located chambres d’hôtes right next to the bell tower of the cathedral. Furnished with style and taste by Yohann who was a friendly and welcoming host. Native of the town, he gave us some great suggestions of what to visit in the region. He cooked us a great meal in the evening, with a small but well chosen wine list. Breakfast was similarly delicious with home made jam and freshly-squeezed orange juice. The little terrace has amazing views over the town and surrounding countryside. Highly recommended
