Horgabost Campsite

It was by far the worst place I stayed on our trip. The location cannot be faulted but the owner was extremely rude and unhelpful and we were made to feel unwelcome from the start, to the point we left a day early. We also had someone pitch, literally on our pitch which they weren't interested in asking them to move. Toilets were filthy and showers are not very private. no locked door, just a curtain and the male cubicles enter behind the same curtain from the shower stall. There is not many toilets for the size of the site which is likely why they are unkept, sheer volume of use. Would not recommend.

What can we say - simply amazing! Firstly, it is amazing value for money. We camped in a tent and our pitch was excellent, plenty space for our large 6 person tent, our van beside us and we created a separate kitchen area under a tarpaulin - plenty space for that and for the kids to play around the tent. Ray was amazing telling us all about the site and the island and gave us loads of tips on where to go. Despite what some might say, the toilet/shower block was excellent. They were always clean, the showers were hot and lovely and easy to use. The plate wash area was great and has hot water. There is even a fridge/freezer to pop your food/ice packs. Plenty space for rubbish. Loads of drinking taps dotted all around the site so no matter where your pitch is you will have easy access to water. We didn't have any midgies when we were there and the weather was great apart from one very windy night. And the beach - well, it is just stunning! White sand, turquoise water. Go to the end of the beach to watch the sun setting over Taransay. It is so beautiful there that a billionaire had his super yacht parked up in the bay. Cost him a bit more than a bargain £15 a night though ;)

This is a lovely campsite in a stunning location. Great friendly staff & owners. The facilities were good with an indoor washing up area, clean toilets and showers with plenty of hot water (don’t forget your £1 coins. Absolutely no negatives at all and can’t wait to go back.

Arrived at Horgabost and went to inspect toilet facilities. Site representative approached us and asked if we had any problems. We told him that toilets were minimalist, lacked privacy and showed signs of mould. He simply shrugged his shoulders . Later that night, I received a call from the owner who basically said, there is no mould and if you don’t like it, you can leave. He went on to say that if we have any complaints they should be directed to him alone and not his site representative. These people don’t realise that they represent Harris hospitality and that by acting the way they do, they don’t serve Harris’s best interests. Further, to block constructive criticism after you have asked for it is not at all helpful . Do yourselves and Harris a favour by looking at the art of possible in terms of quality toilet facilities and customer relations.

The Harris coastline is stunning but the Horgabost site has a very ramshackle feel to it. It says that it is basic and it is. When I was there there were maybe 60 units there. In the gents there are two showers and two toilets. It is adequate but I would not like to stay longer than two nights. The bins and recycling all seems a bit of a palaver too with bins and skips near the toilet block but recycling elsewhere.

Great site but don’t forget it’s a field so be prepared to be slightly uneven. No problem for us in our camper van but may be more of a challenge for longer wheelbase. Showers were adequate but would benefit from maybe an upgrade, over 25 units on site when we were there which can create its own demands! Beach was fantastic. Would we go again? In a heartbeat!
