The food was a but below traditional ryokan standard in term of skill and taste. The onsen smell so strongly of chlorine.

Wife and I traveling from the USA. We found this place to be ideal for a pre and post Nakasendo trail hike (although the trail itself was not that special). The staff was friendly and spoke English well enough. The on-site onsen (separate sexes) was clean and perfect for after a hard day’s hiking.
Breakfast was fun and a bit of a hurdle if you’ve not had Japanese-style breakfasts.
Hotel decor seemed straight out of the 1960s, but it found it charming.
One suggestion for hotel: list the times of the free shuttles from the train station more prominently on your website.

We got there by hotel bus from the train station. The bus doesn't stay at the station for long and doesn't wait for anyone. Unfortunately, there is a construction site on the embankment opposite the hotel, so the view from the window was not satisfactory. The hotel is clean, the staff is friendly, the onsen is interesting, but tired. The breakfast is good.
There was access to the "water park" in the neighboring building (passage through the 2nd floor). The pools are about 1 m. There is one slide. Not bad for a family vacation, but for adults it will be just not bad.

Even better than expected, dinner and breakfast were delicious. High standard.
The room is also comfortable and spacious, with a hot spring bath, and a children's playground and spa world next to it, which is awesome.

We stayed in this hotel purely as a stopover. There aren't many local hotel options, but it was unexpectedly good. The only problem was that the transportation was a bit inconvenient, and we had to walk a long way after getting off the bus.

The hotel is a 20-minute walk from Magome-juku Tourist Station. It is currently under renovation and the food tastes average.
