I used one of the cottage cabins. I liked having a full kitchen. This was the first time I stayed in one of these at Whaler's Rest but I have used them at other Thousand Trails parks. It was nice to have family over for dinner. I enjoy being close to a walkable beach.

The sites are well maintained are mostly secluded. Some were a little tight. Overall a 5-star rating. The Hwy 101 is atrocious with high bumps sinking roadway and unsafe shoulders. We went home via Hwy 20 (Olive Street) in Newport to I-5. beautiful drive reminded us of going over Snoqualmie pass, 101 caused weak areas of welded brackets for batteries to break off. The 1"x1" piece of metal lodged in a tire and we had a flat.

We have stayed at Whalers Rest campground many times over the years as we enjoy Newport and that part of the Oregon Coast. This stay was outstanding, by far our best camping experience at WR. Three things stood out - 1) the change to assigned sites took the stress out of showing up and actually finding an acceptable site. In the past we would plan ahead, trying to guess the day of the week and time that campers might be vacating sites and show up only to learn that we had guessed wrong. Then we would start what we called the “circle dance”, dragging our RV and tow car around the camping loops, many times, hoping to find a site we could fit in. We had horrible, stressful experiences in the past just finding a site. We love now having an assigned site - WAY TO GO TT. 2) The staff was the most friendly and helpful staff that we have experienced at any TT resort we have stayed at. It felt like we were dealing with “friends” that actually wanted to help us. 3) The campground and facilities seemed cleaner and kept up better than we had noted in the past. We had a wonderful stay and just wanted to acknowledge and thank TT and the staff at Whalers Rest for making improvements that made our camping experience more enjoyable - especially the assigned sites.

The assigned spot placement was so much better than in the past when we had to go on a major hunt to try and find a spot. . The staff was really exceptional and our experience was awesome. We really appreciate your new format of assigned spots. No more stress trying to find a spot we fit in.

We had a beautiful campground spot and the entire campground is so nice. The facilities were cleaned regularly. The campground was maintained beautifully and the rangers were so friendly and tried to answer all the questions we had. Only problem we found was the signal to our satellite internet was not the best. Trees that make this place so beautiful, do not leave a lot of clear sky to receive our signal. But it was good enough for a few days in a very nice and relaxing campsite

Perfect location for beach access, close to town. Park well maintained, staff very knowledgeable and friendly. Great location if you have pets. Wifi sucks. But you can simply go to either of the two clubhouse's and use their free wifi. Easy in / out.

The location is nice, it's about 10 min south of Newport so a quick drive. It's located across the highway from the ocean, so it's a short hike to the beach which is nice. The facilities are decent. We had some challenges at our actual camp site as it was quite small and the small grass areas up front were flooded, soggy and had large / deep tire ruts. No real place to spread out. We made the best of it but we were pretty disappointed in the condition of our spot.

While the resort itself seemed well-equipped, our RV site was terrible. It was almost as if they had converted a small corner of what used to be part of the travel lane into a site. Our tow vehicle and RV were pulled in as far as they could go, and I was still worried we would intrude upon the travel lane. Our site was a muddy, soggy mess, with puddles several inches deep throughout the site, including one at the entrance to our RV (which I couldn't reposition at all, due to the small site). I had to pull the vehicle out of the site in order to load up the family without completely soaking their feet. We've camped all around OR in the rain, and have never experienced anything like it.

We were assigned the pull-through site at the hair-pin turn which, we were concerned, would be very noisy with every RV camper driving past. But we were very happy to be wrong. Everyone passing by was very respectful of the speed limit and all we heard while we were outside the RV was the quiet crunching of gravel as vehicles slowly circled around us. While inside our RV it was all peace and quiet, albeit sort of like being on display, so we had to keep our shades down for privacy. We love the storm season and enjoy the rain, but our partially flooded campsite put a slight damper on our stay since the flooded portion was directly under our entryway with no room to position our RV away from the water. We immediately notified the staff but they did not come by until the next morning. They did attempt to divert the flow of water away from the site by scraping a shallow rut along the roadside but it had minimal effect. Luckily we brought our muck boots with us but we would've preferred a less flooded location.
