Alegria Barranco

I have previously stayed at the Barranco Apartments many years ago and was interested in seeing how they had changed it since its refurbishment. I can honestly say I was pleasantly surprised. The room we stayed in was on the 3rd (top) floor and had no balcony but your doors opened onto the walkway. Two sunbeds where situated outside your room. At first I did miss the privacy of my own balcony but to be fair the fact we had sun all day long (we had a room overlooking the roundabout) this was soon forgave this. The room had the basics you need for a self catering holiday, two induction hobs and a microwave. we did miss the use of an oven, but we managed. We did buy a shrp knife as the ones supplied where not very sharp. As we would be cooking quite a lot of meals we decided to invest in one from the, (we sell everything) shop opposite the apartments called Bazar Nido. I also bought a teatowel and a bath mat for a very reasonable price. The water was always hot the shower was great just the design of the drain did mean that the floor got wet. Every other day they offered to change our towels and the bed sheets changed after a week. The air con worked perfectly and if you wanted an early night you shut out the hustle and bustle of the local bars by closing the windows. It was quite loud with the window open, but hey we're all on holiday aren't we?. The beds ,two singles, where comfortable and you where supplied with two plump pillows. The pull out bed in the living area was never slept on by ourselves but I must admit wasn't the comfiest to sit and watch tv on. The tv had the basic English channels BBC 1 & 2, ITV, Channel 4 & 5 and Sky News etc. The Wi-Fi was very reliable and we used it daily to stream music and make video calls home. We paid to have use of the room safe which wasn't very expensive. The pool area is very small this didn't effect our holiday but wouldn't have liked it if we had small children or teenagers with us as there is nothing to entertain them and no sunbed to sit around the pool. All in all I would recommend Alegria Barranco to anyone traveling as a couple. We stayed in January and there did seem to be a lot of people staying here for three or four nights at a time. We didn't see any stag parties stopping here, and everyone seemed friendly enough. The staff although very busy were very helpful and friendly.

We stayed at Hotel Alegria Barranco for eleven nights in February. At first it seemed promising but at nine o’ clock in the evening the noise began: There’s a sports bar on the ground floor and ‘till 30 minutes past midnight every night of our stay there were relentless party noises, screaming and karaoke music. Our room was right above the party. I’ve stayed in every continent, but I’ve never experienced anything like this. I can’t award this hotel any stars as a result. Hotel Alegria Barranco also advertises that they send a car to pick their guests up from the airport but they didn’t and when we asked about it it became abundantly clear they never have done such a thing and no-one working at the hotel knew about such an offer. They also charged us one euro for simply weighing our bags, which I know is not a hefty price but managed to add insult to injury.

We were dreading staying here after reading the reviews and contemplated booking elsewhere, but we stuck with it and it wasn’t as bad as previous reviews, but it wasn’t great by any means. The positives are the location is great, close to decent bars and restaurants and only a short walk to the beach and safari centre. The beds were comfy, but that’s all I can say about the room. On check in, we found the reception staff a bit standoffish, like they couldn’t be bothered, no holiday atmosphere at all. The room when opened the doors, absolutely stank of cigarette smoke, it was so bad we had to buy air freshener and keep the windows open. The bed for my son, was a sofa, which wasn’t made up and had cigarette burns in it. We only had the cleaners once and all they did was replace the towels and empty the bin. No beds were changed or the floors swept. They could be great apartments if they were cleaned daily, if it was a sofa bed and not just a sofa and the staff had a bit of personality. We booked with Jet2 and there was no mention of a deposit, as mentioned on previous reviews. We heard people checking in and they had to pay one, so not sure why we didn’t. Overall it didn’t spoil our holiday, but we definitely won’t be back any time soon!

Worried after reading negative reviews. Pleasantly surprised: spacious living area, kettle, toaster, large fridge freezer, TV. Small balcony. Our room was quiet. Arrived on Monday, clean towels and sachet toiletries. Wednesday clean towels. Friday apartment cleaned throughout, fresh bedding, towels, and sachet toiletries, hairdryer. Negative: Top shower head didn't work, the other leaked, hand held, not a huge problem. Never used the pool. it looked okay. Lovely rooftop top solarium, about 10 sunloungers excellent. Check-in was easy, pleasant, helpful staff, no deposit asked for. At check-out there is somewhere to leave luggage, also machine to weigh your luggage about a euro. It's a great idea. Supermarket next door everything you need, walking distance to restaurants, shops and beach. Would recommend.

Room cleaned, fresh bedding towels on the Friday. Sachet toiletries. Hairdryer was ok too. Negative the shower head leaked, had to hold, top shower didn't work, not a huge issue. Lovely rooftop solarium about 10 sunloungers. Never used the pool, looked okay. Staff were very helpful at the reception. Checking - in was good. Somewhere to store luggage at checkout if needed. Supermarket next door. Walking distance to restaurants and shops.

Was dreading going here due to reviews. But it was fine. We had an apartment with fridge, hob, microwave etc. where we had breakfast everyday. Room was clean. Couple lights didn’t work and couldn’t get main shower head to work but holding hand one was fine. Little noisy as was on the road but would return it’s a 2 star so don’t expect luxury. Got deposit back on check out easy.
