Off Beat Guesthouse - Self-Check-in - Sleep Conscious

This place would be ideal for a young couple or solo traveler visiting San Sebastian but I'm not sure it would fit everyones needs. The room was nice, the location was perfect, but the 3pm check in is a bit late, I arrived at 2.50pm and was basically told to wait by a cleaner, when I eventually let myself in, the room was finished and clean? So why did she tell me to wait? I think having no staff is a nice idea but it has some complications, there was building work being done downstairs which woke me up but I was kindly refunded some of my reservation, which I appreciate. I imagine if it was completely full there may be waiting for the bathrooms too. The communication from the staff was overall good, the room was clean and in a good location. Overall I was happy with Off-Beat and I would come back but I'm sure it wouldn't be for everyone, just depends on who you are and what your needs are.

We had been staying in another hotel 100m away but had to move due to our room being unavailable for another night. Check in wasn't allowed until 3pm and there was nowhere to put our cases so we had to carry them round with us and the online check-in wouldn't work. We got in the hotel at 3pm but our room was still being "cleaned" - eventually got into our room at 3.30pm which is ridiculous for £100 a night. We fell asleep for an hour or so, and when I woke up I noticed a strong smell of urine and discovered that it was coming from the blanket over the bottom of the bed. I emailed the hotel to say that we needed to change rooms. To wait for the reply we popped out for a bite to eat and then we got a phone call from the hotel to say that we could change to another hotel, but this was about a quarter of a mile away (in the new town, we wanted to be in the old town) and it was by now 5pm, we would have wasted a full day by time we had packed up and moved. I explained this and said that we would stay in the room but would expect a partial refund (and suggested 30 euros) - I was told that they would see what they could do. A few minutes later I received an email to say they would not give any compensation as they had offered another room. We were too tired to argue, but beware as the standard of cleaning throughout the room was very poor, a total contrast to the first hotel (Old City House - can highly recommend). This hotel is barely hostel standard for the price of a 4 star hotel, location is great - but no good if they expect you to move!!
