For its price range, this is a brilliant hotel. Good clean rooms, comfortable beds, together with excellent facilities, including a top-notch indoor swimming pool, health spa and leisure centre. There is also an outdoor pool, but that was closed for the winter when I arrived. Of course, a hotel’s reputation depends equally as much on its staff, and the vast majority of those employed here went out of their way to make my week memorable for all the right reasons. With apologies to the guys who in their own way were equally as welcoming, a special mention however must go to Clara, Jessica, and Junalyn, whose charming personalities and dazzling smiles always brightened this old bloke’s day. Oh yes, I did have one rather unfortunate incident, but that was entirely of my own making. Also, it did allow manager Ian to display how quickly he could be on the ball. He undoubtedly went well over and above the call of duty in helping to resolve the situation for me. All in all, everything came together rather well at the La Villette Hotel.

There is also an outdoor pool, but that was closed for the winter when I arrived. Of course, a hotel’s reputation depends equally as much on its staff, and the vast majority of those employed here went out of their way to make my week memorable for all the right reasons. With apologies to the guys who in their own way were equally as good, a special mention however must go to Clara, Jessica, and Junalyn, whose charming personalities and dazzling smiles always brightened this old bloke’s day. Oh yes, I did have one rather unfortunate incident worth writing about, but that was entirely my own fault. Having stayed far too long in the poolside steam room (close to an hour, I think) when I stood up to leave I lost all balance and was instantly nauseous. According to others there who came quicky to my aid, I was a vivid shade of tomato red all over. The initial answer was to sit me on the steps leading into the pool and keep throwing water over me. Now being able to look back and laugh about it, it was in a way a bit like being baptised over and over again. And it certainly worked to a degree. Hotel manager Ian and several of his staff were quickly on the scene as well, their concern such that Ian arranged a doctor’s appointment for me within the hour. Although driven to the St Martin Health Centre by Graham (a Guernsey local who subsequently became a very good friend) Ian came along too. And when I emptied the contents of my stomach into a plastic bucket halfway to the surgery, he even disposed of the bucket’s contents for me on arrival. Now that’s what I call going way over and beyond the call of duty. In conclusion, even though it must have been very close to the end of her evening shift, Dr Newman was equally brilliant, taking all the time needed to ensure that I was by this time pretty much over the worst. Thanks to the NHS, it didn’t cost me a penny, either.

This was probably a lovely little hotel in its day but it seems to have lost its way - is it a hotel, a restaurant, a function room or a health spa. It doesn’t seem to have anyone in charge to make it all come together, they seem to be a series of little disconnected businesses located on the one site. Breakfast was a shambles both days, the customers sorting each other’s problems while the bewildered staff got shouted at by a very loud man every time they went into the kitchen to pass on the customers’ comments. He clearly wasn’t a chef otherwise the food would at least come out well cooked. It didn’t and it wasn’t a particularly pleasant start to each day. By night he seems to be on a mission to overpower everyone with garlic and to ensure everything that came out of his kitchen was unbearably hot and consequently overcooked - it all seemed fresh out of the microwave. Having said that, its bedrooms are modestly priced and spotlessly clean, just as you’d want for your Gran’s care home. They even come with sinks the perfect height for wheelchair users, but pretty much useless when you’re 6’ tall.

This was our second visit to La Villette hotel and again we could not fault it. We had a large room in the main building - the steps down are a bit steep for anybody with mobility issues but there is a lift. Great to be able to use the gym/pool/jacuzzi. Bus stop outside - recommend a puffin pass if you are staying for a week as you can use it to get round the island and to and from the airport (pass can be bought at the airport). We ate at the hotel a couple of times - good choice and portion size - and also went to Sahara City and Wicked Wolf which are both nearby. There's also the Captains/Barbarie/Douvres in the area but didn't fancy the walk back in the dark though the bus does stop outside. Love Guernsey, the island of my childhood, and hopefully will be back again (staying at La Villette of course!).

I had a 4-night stay earlier this month and was very comfortable. The indoor and outdoor pools are clean and were very quiet. All the room facilities were spotless and in good condition. I slept well here. The staff were mainly very helpful and polite. This is a very traditional and conventional hotel though and I’d suggest the staff have some diversity training to learn more about interacting with guests who don’t fit the 60+ white couple demographic.

We stayed at La Villette in Guernsey. I would say a solid 3-star unpretentious hotel offering reasonable accommodation and good quality standard fare in the restaurant. Excellent leisure facilities are free to residents and the location is handy for local bus services. Our only gripe was that the housekeeping was not that brilliant. Our room was only say 75% serviced to an acceptable standard. Over the five days we could not help but notice the accumulation of debris on the breakfast room carpet. We would have expected this to have been hoovered every day but this was not to be on our watch. Just little things that are easy to fix. Also, the smell of tobacco smoke in the reception area. Not sure where it was coming from, maybe an employee having a quick puff ? We also have to be honest in that we did not feel that the hotel deserved any additional gratuities because of these cleaning deficiencies. Even the final bill was poorly presented with a dodgy printer - see photo attached. In conclusion, a few small remedies put in place would add considerably to the visitor experience. However, we would still recommend this hotel and definitely have no issue returning & would be hoping to see those mentioned improvements.
