Unique Interior and Ambiance: The castle’s historical charm, quirky yet sumptuous decor, and authentic castle atmosphere were frequently praised. Rooms featured fireplaces, four-poster beds, and antique furnishings, creating a "country house" or "castle retreat" experience.

An absolute gem of a find! We had a midweek overnight stay in this stunning castle the whole building is full of interesting features and a true feast for the eyes. We had a delicious 3 course meal in the dining room - everything on the menu sounded lovely. Our choices of falafel and ravioli were gorgeous, followed by two perfectly cooked steaks delightfully complemented by the wine. We finished off with two fab desserts and sampled the castles own gin which was crisp and refreshing. The rooms are all different with their own quirky interiors the bed and pillows were wonderfully comfortable ensuring a great nights sleep. Breakfast was a wholesome full English for us but there are plenty of other options available and a good selection of fruit and pastries to choose from too just what was needed to set us up for our onward journey.

With my love for the castle, I was over the moon when my friend approached me to ask whether I knew of any hotels in and around the Lake District that would house us for her hen, I couldn’t say “Augill!” fast enough! Obviously, hosting a tame hen party would for most hotels, be a put off - but not here. Wendy and the staff (special mention to Jo, Jude and the amazing Rose) welcomed us with ease, they made the whole experience fantastic. From giving us access to a space to all be together, they laughed with us, judged toilet roll bridal dresses, and not a single request was too much! The bride was over the moon with the whole weekend. Thank you to team Augill for being so extraordinary all the time.

We had an afternoon tea for 3 at 2:00pm today, Wednesday 16 July 2025. It was excellent food with a variety of cakes, sandwich and savoury and scones. With as much tea or coffee as required. The area we dined in was very clean and comfortable and the owner and staff were very helpful and friendly. I would not hesitate to recommend this hidden gem ☝️

Attended a wedding this weekend - the castle was stunning in the sunshine and a wonderful backdrop to a beautiful wedding. The staff at the wedding were attentive, friendly snd unobtrusive. The food was fantastic and it’s the perfect spot for a smaller wedding with a relaxed feel where everyone could feel comfortable and looked after. Was a very special day. ❤️

It was so refreshing to stay at a hotel which did not feel so much as a hotel as a very relaxing country house where we did not have to worry about everyday living. The environment is amazing - very different with unusual decoration, antiques etc. The room we stayed in had turrets and a leather sofa. We experienced breakfast, dinner and afternoon tea, and did not need to eat for a couple of days afterwards - very good!! The scenery round about is sublime even in November. We definitely will be going back.

Took advantage of an offer in the Daily Telegraph. This place is totally different. One can just wander around the public rooms and marvel at the artefacts, decor and ambience. I found it to be very cosy and comfortable. The bed was probably the most comfortable I have ever slept in. The food was excellent. Our hosts, Wendy and Simon were most helpful and attentive. A thoroughly enjoyable stay.

Stayed at the Castle for our golden wedding anniversary and we had such a great weekend. Everything was just perfect our room was gorgeous with a big four poster bed and lovely soft duvet and pillows you could just sink into. We had afternoon tea that was delicious and you couldn’t have asked for anything more for breakfast. The evening meals were so tasty we really couldn’t have eaten any more. The staff were so welcoming and friendly and it was such a lovely peaceful place to be. Will definitely be going back.

What a fabulously quirky, welcoming place this is. Tucked away along a quiet country lane just south of the A66 near Brough, Augill Castle Is a charming folly with a highly entertaining history. Set in beautiful gardens with a delightful terrace that would be perfect for summer days. The food was generous and all that you would expect of an afternoon tea. The service was friendly, informal and relaxed. Nothing was hurried and we were able to take as much time as we wanted. The greeting at the entrance to the drive announced that this would be "unlike anywhere you have ever stayed before ". I agree!
