A pleasant enough hotel but they place too much emphasis on their 2 AA rosette’s for food which whilst is generally good, it does amount to all presentation but very small portions.

It was our 20th wedding anniversary and the hotel upgraded us to a premium room, which was a lovely gesture. The room was very well appointed and the bed was extremely comfortable. All the staff are always very welcoming, friendly and attentive and you feel very at home in the relaxed surroundings. I had asked the head chef to cook a special favourite meal for my wife and he was only too happy to oblige. The dinner was superb as usual and the Gallybagger Souffle is like eating a cheese flavoured cloud! This is without doubt one of our favourite hotels and we look forward to our next visit.

We stayed at The Royal with friends for the Dine and Stay package. Everything about our experience was excellent. The hotel is a lovely building with a grand but extremely comfortable feel. The garden view room was lovely with all the little things taken care of. All members of staff are very kind, helpful and professional, nothing is too much trouble. The dinner was very good, fantastic flavours and attention to detail. Breakfast was great with lots of choice and the staff going the extra mile by always keeping the juices topped up, re-filling coffees and teas and offering extra toast and pastries. In all, the sort of experience you might get in the better 5 star hotels (if you're lucky).

Our return to the Royal was, as always, very pleasant...due mainly to the friendliness of the staff and the excellent food.
