I visited the Chequers with friends for a Sunday carvery. Nice setting and a pleasant atmosphere - apart from a child at a nearby table throwing food onto the floor. Generally, the food was good. Meat excellent- very tender pink beef and good roast potatoes. Good selection of vegetables but everything under seasoned - apart from the pork crackling which was excessively salty. Yorkshire puds were rather dry. The gravy, however, was transparent, gloopy and lacked flavour. Veg and potatoes very similar to a Toby but Toby gravy issuperior. I had the 'small' helping, which meant I was obliged to use a small plate, therefore, cutting the food was awkward as it tended to spill over the edge. Normal dinner plates are not permitted! As the amount of meat depends on the small or larger option, I really can't see that having a normal dinner plate would mean a measurably lower profit for the pub. In all, a good carvery but only slightly better than a Toby.

We visited for our wedding anniversary and had a lovely evening. The staff were so cheerful and helpful. Our table was near a rowdy crowd who were very noisy. We asked to be moved somewhere quieter, and our wish was granted within minutes. Thank you for your consideration. Our meals were excellent. Beautifully cooked, well presented, and flavoursome. All the different flavours really came through. We had nothing we could fault with our evening there.

We are staying on the Isle for a wee break for our anniversary. We found this pub by a quick search online and I’m so glad we did. It was just amazing both the food and service. Very friendly to every customer, adult, children or dogs. The food was so delicious, I don’t normally order a dessert but I couldn’t resist and I was definitely not disappointed. Highly recommend if in the area or if not travel it’s so worth it. Hope to visit again while we are here .

A winter stay while visiting family on the island. Large clean and comfy room made for a very pleasant stay despite the cold outside. Excellent breakfast set us I for the day each morning served by the lovely Ally. Excellent pub food and cost old school pub bar enhanced the experience. Good value, good food, good accommodation and lovely staff, what is not to like.

My biggest disappointment on the Isle of Wight. I searched on the internet for the best carvery for a Sunday lunch and found the Chequers Inn at Rookley. Its claims to be the best and a range of reviews praising the quality and service going back several years plus positive comments on Open Table convinced me that this was the place to go. How wrong I was. The carvery looked promising but did not live up to expectations. The pork was overcooked and tough, the vegetables were totally overcooked and Yorkshire pudding was tough. To add to the general disappointment, it was all cold. I would certainly not recommend this place.

34 in our family group distributed round the conservatory. The service was good and the staff friendly and patient. The food was a different story, we have visited the Chequers many times and it's our 'go to' restaurant for Sunday lunch and carvery. On this occasion there were quite a few mumblings and mutterings. The carvery was disappointing, complaints about the rock hard potatoes and tough yorkshire puddings mainly, I had the pork belly and cold black pudding, did someone forget to heat it or were they just not bothered? All in all a very average experience. Our large group was pre-booked so they knew we were coming, as the guy who set this venue up the family weren't too slow to let me know that they were not amused! Shame about the quality of the food, time for a change methinks.

Popped in for lunch with my wife and two children. Staff were happy to accommodate despite a busy afternoon of reservations. Food reasonably priced, plenty of options and portion sizes generous. I had the pie of the day (Turkey and stuffing), it was delicious! Kids meals looked great and service was perfect. Highly recommend for tourists looking for a trusted place to eat with great wholesome food.

This place is brilliant !!! We have been here at least 5 times and every time they have passed with flying colours of how good it is . Very helpful Staff and the Carvery is delicious, one thing that could be better if we got lamb when we were there , just try to book a early lunch or a dinner for a chancer to get lamb !
