Great hotel and general atmosphere. Unfortunately spoilt by two unwelcoming locals spoiling for a fight. Spent a lovely afternoon, and conversations until a guy named Pete turned up. He and another guy were confrontational, rude and spoilt and otherwise lovely day and evening. Great staff, good food. However, when I was there they tolerated local bully intimidating visitors.

Got word of the pies when passing through the area so made a side trip from Ranfurly. The pies are large and very nice. Friendly host, and a lovely old pub. Interesting history to the town and surrounding area including having one of 5 TB sanitoriums set up around the country around the 1930s.

The Canterbury MG Car Club, dined at Waipiata Hotel over 2 nights over Labour Weekend. Mark is a great host and worked hard to accommodate our numbers, His staff were welcoming and efficient at getting a wide range of meals out. Food great. thanks

You walk in and greeted by a warm and old style country pub. It took a minute to get our bearings, but once we found a table, the food was amazing the service friendly. We had the steak and cheese pie with vege and mash, chicken burger, beef burger, and steak sandwich. All were generous and tasty. We were doing the rail trail, this was the best food on the trip by a country mile.

Delicious food and great service - despite being incredibly busy the night we visited. Our meals were generous, and they good range of beers on tap. The staff were helpful and ensured our meals catered for our dietary requirements. Totally recommend this place!

3 of us tried their pies, steak and cheese and steak and blue cheese. Now you would imagine that in a steak and cheese pie there would be two specific tastes, steak and cheese. Thats where you are wrong, none of could taste the cheese in either of their pies. We ended up taking the top offr to check and saw a small amount of cheese but not enough to taste as it was overpowered by everything else. The meat, sauce and pastry were good but it ended up being a plain LARGE meat pie. I couldnt rate this pie any better as there was no cheese to taste and thats whats it is sold as. Ne needs to stop being stingy and be more generous with his cheese.

We were with a private driver who knew of this cafe, so we headed here on our way to Dunedin. It appears as if it is popular with bikers, as it was fairly busy for the time we were there, and the feel of it was very casual New Zealand. We had never had a meat pie, so we decided to try them - one beef and blue cheese and one venison. Another person in our party had the lamb shanks with mash and veggies. Outstanding all around. We would go back in a heartbeat!

A great place for a feed, very good ‘pub grub’ with a friendly staff and great ambience. We would recommend it to travelers and bike riders as a good place to refuel. It is in near original condition and has a real charm to it. It’s a great place with real character.

Good country pub. Nice food, which is not over priced. a nice tange of meals and snaxks. Good range of drinks. A mixture of locals and tourists/cyclists. Most important: friendly welcoming staff. Great place to sit outside and appreciate the view.
