History:
Built in 1842 the historic Simmstown Manor has lots to offer. The house was originally built by Harvey McElroy for his daughter, Mariah McElroy Simpson. The original owners were devastated by the Civil War and the property was then sold to John Simms. John Simms had amassed a great amount of wealth prior to the war and unlike many others was able to sustain it during the war and use it to purchase the sizable brick mansion and the surrounding lands. After a few years he owned the 2400 acres surrounding the great house. The Simms family completed a two story wing on the north side of the house and moved in in 1868. The house held many grand parties and entertainments during the Simms’ time and often opened its doors to the most prosperous and socially prominent families around. When John Simms wife, Sarah Celclia Simms, died in 1895 he surveyed his 2400 acres of land and divided it among each of his five surviving children. His youngest child, Mary Simms Smith was given Simmstown as her part of the property divide and her father continued to live with her until his death. Upon Mr. Simms' death Mary kept the house and it was passed through the family until 1983 when Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Kelly Jr., the great grandson of Mr. Simms decided to sell the house to the current owner, Mr. Larry Hodge. The house and grounds both went through an extensive renovation with efforts to keep historical aspects in as many ways possible.

Stunning property
Simmstown Manor was the perfect landing spot for our bourbon tour adventure. The house is even more gorgeous in person, but what really sets it apart from other rentals, was how well-stocked it is. Attention to details meant we had everything we needed and more. The space was well laid out, so our group of 10 had plenty of room to spread out, but plenty of large gathering areas for when we were all together. Our only complaint is that we didn't stay longer!

Excellent stay in rural Bourbon country
Beautiful historic home that’s been updated but also preserves the history of the house. Was an excellent, comfortable stay for our large group that split between the main house & carriage house. It was an easy drive to distilleries in the area and into Bardstown or Springfield.

Bourbon and Horses Friends Weekend
A group of 12 HS friends (couples) from Missouri and Northern KY spent 4 days at Simmstown Manor enjoying bourbon tastings, horse racing at Keeneland and the culinary cuisine of Chef Gwyn. This was the perfect location for all of the activities and the Manor, situated on acres of beautiful rolling bluegrass hills with frolicking horses and gorgeous scenery, could not have been a more fitting setting. The home is period-perfect but with all the necessary amenities that make it an easy place to relax and immerse yourself into the beautiful southern Kentucky charm. We have already decided to return. All of the rooms were lovely and so many charming places to read and cuddle The meals from Chef Gwyn could not be matched- just incredible. Thank you for this getaway gem

Thanksgiving & a Bourbon Birthday
Our family consisted of eight adults arriving from SC, GA, and AL. We all were mesmerized by the Manor located on a quaint farm with retired horses and rolling hills. The home is quite spacious with stunningly decorated rooms. We utilized every room playing games in the front parlor and upstairs sitting room, the men played pool and watched football in the carriage house, and we all strolled outside and sat around the fire pit. The girls' favorite room with the elegant dining room with enormous windows and banquet dining room table. The kitchen was also spacious and an extremely easy place to work. We went to four distilleries, and loved returning to the Manor with the decor of horse champions and bourbon. The bedrooms were comfortable and elegant and all had bathrooms within a few steps of each. We were saturated in KY culture and loved the entire weekend including our sprinkling of snow on the last day.

Beautiful home and property!
We LOVED the house and property. It was exactly the retreat we needed during a difficult time. The owner was lovely to visit with and the horses were beautiful. We will be staying here again.

50th Birthday
Amazing first impression! Photos are accurate but there is so much more to see in person. The house is gorgeous and the renovations are great for modern times while keeping the spirit of the age of the house. The property is kept photo ready. Beautiful sunsets, horses, a mini lake, patios, spiral staircase and more. One critique… It says it sleeps 12 w/ the carriage house, just know the beds are small in the carriage house and the 3rd room does not have a bathroom of convenience. The bedrooms in the main house are large with nice beds and plenty of room to spread out in the many sitting rooms. Large tables for games, a nice bar and fully equipped kitchen. Location is perfect as well for an easy drive to many sites and distilleries. The host goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome. We highly recommend!
