The experience of staying in an almost inhabited and pristine island was unforgettable. The accommodation is uniquely simple but still stylish and very comfortable. The service and friendliness of staff is wonderful and the food is great. The coral reef is stunning but the most important is the low ecological footprint of our stay and the conservation and educational purpose of this enterprise. Unmissable if you are travelling to Zanzibar!

What a stunning and wonderful gem. Came to this beautiful and pristine eco-marine lodge after summiting Kilimanjaro. This was what I needed to decompress. Comfy eco-friendly cabin, sunkissed beach, and chill/ good vibes. The staff were amazing all around. Chef John and his team like Muren and Zena kept me fed and satiated. All the meals I had were included and I loved sampling everything they gave me. Endless coffee and ginger tea was an added touch. Chagga was super informative. Loved having after dinner drinks and talking with him. And his guided walk to see those incredible coconut crabs was perfect. Vera was the ultimate host/ manager. No words in terms of how generous and how much she cared for everything and everyone on the island. The other park staff and rangers were always smiles and helpful. Be aware no doors anywhere I could see on the island except for the lighthouse. Felt super safe regardless. The bungalow was well outfitted. Mosquito net over bed and solar powered lights all over. Fan was available but only used it once. Their window system is genius. Bathroom had an easy compost toilet and simple rain shower system. Loved the easy shades in the bungalow. Internet only in the main building, which was nice to help disconnect. If you have cell service it is throughout the island but not consistent. Flip flops definitely not recommended. Grateful they provided coral/ reef safe sandals. Used them to get to the boat, off the boat, and throughout the island. Snorkel, swim, or wander walk the island - all wonderful. Lots to explore or not. Enjoyed learning about the marine life, conservation, and seeing how they model true eco-travel excellence. Highly recommend walking the whole island during low tide.

Chumbe Island was the highlight of a monthlong trip that spanned Kenya, mainland Tanzania, and Zanzibar. The island's beauty and relaxing atmosphere was just what we needed. In addition to the all-inclusive and excellent food, snorkeling and interpretive nature walks were offered at no charge. We loved reading, relaxing, tidepooling, meeting other guests, and climbing the lighthouse. Snorkeling was the best and we saw a hawksbill sea turtle among other rare and exceptional species. If you are interested in reef conservation and sustainable tourism, visit Chumbe.

Seat cushions should be renewed. Lots of mosquitoes and wood mites. The mites are everywhere and they creep into your bags, clothes etc.. You will see fresh bite marks for at least a week on your body. Hardy any variation in the meals. We were here in 2002 and we felt the comfort of the guests have been ignored for a long time.We cannot recommend this place to anyone.Price is too high for what it offers. We know part of it supports the locals. The fan and the lights don't work throughout the hot night. We decided to leave earlier.

We experienced a Robinson Crusoe feeling on a beautiful island with white sand beaches, amazing snorkelling spots at the coral reef (we even saw a (vegetable) shark!) and diverse (tiny) forest. There are lots of small hermit crabs and huge coconut crabs. The 360 view on the lighthouse is amazing. We would definitely recommend to stay one (or more) night(s) in one of the seven beautiful ecolodges on Chumbe island. This way you can experience all beautiful things the island has to offer. The staff has great knowledge about the nature, provide delicious meals and are very friendly. They want to make your stay unforgettable.

If you are looking for the ultimate nature experience in Zanzibar you definitely have to visit Chumbe Island! - Best snorkeling experience I had in Zanzibar (MUCH better than Mnemba Island) with a high chance of seeing reef sharks, turtles and rays) - Incredibly knowledgeable staff that can tell you about the wildlife on and around the island - Cosy, eco-conscious huts that invite you to relax and forget about the world - AMAZING food! - I have never seen so many hermit crabs of all shapes and sizes in my life - Special experience to see the big coconut crabs (definitely go on the guided night walks) - beautiful, unforgettable sunsets - As a traveler who places very high value on sustainable tourism, this was a special treat, and I was impressed by all their thoughtful initiatives The only thing I regret is that we did not stay two nights, we would have loved to enjoy the nature, peace and hospitality a little longer!

I went to the island for a daily trip. Everything was great. I was impressed by the nature, the friendly environment and the hospitable staff, the sustainable and ecological way the lodge has been built, but even more so by the magnificent underwater coral reef. I couldn't stop free diving and taking photos. I would like to go again, but next time I would definItely stay for a few days in one of the bungalows.

Unique resort completely dedicated to sustainable way of living and spending holiday. Very few numbers of guests creates a very calm and relaxed environment. Snorkeling trips, forest walks including guiding about the biological development of the island. In the evening excursion walk to view the coconut crabs. Two floors guest houses with natural AC by open sidewalls and a feeling of sleeping outdoor. Evening discussions with research people from the sustainability areas of Zanzibar university, experts in how the islands eco system is developing. All in all a unique experience.
