Augsburg travel guide and discussion

I used to think traveling in Western Europe would easily cost over 10,000 yuan. This time, I completed a short 4-day, 3-night trip centered around Munich and Bavaria, which completely changed my perspective. With the right money-saving strategies, you can check off fairy-tale castles, medieval towns, and Alpine scenery, all at a much lower cost than commonly reported online. Here’s a practical guide you can copy👇 🚗 Transportation (the key to saving money throughout) Base yourself in Munich to avoid changing accommodations and reduce hassle 1. Bavaria ticket (must buy) Single person, single day for 29 euros. Valid after 9 AM on weekdays and all day on weekends. Covers trains, subways, and buses throughout Bavaria. Use it for round trips to Neuschwanstein Castle and Rothenburg. Group tickets for 2–5 people bring the cost down to about 14 euros per person, offering excellent value. 2. Munich city transportation Single-day city pass for 8 euros, covering spots like Marienplatz, Nymphenburg, and the Viktualienmarkt. Short distances can be walked. 3. Short intercity trips Book Flixbus tickets in advance. One-way fares to Rothenburg and Augsburg can be as low as 10 euros, cheaper than discounted train tickets. 🏠 Accommodation (prioritize areas near Munich central train station) · Hostel beds: 200–280 yuan per night, mostly including free breakfast and shared kitchens. You can buy simple ingredients and cook to save money. · Economy chain hotels (Motel One, Ibis): Shared double rooms average 350 yuan per night per person, with private bathrooms and convenient locations. · Guesthouses in Füssen and Rothenburg: Around 300 yuan per night in the off-season, ideal for a one-day trip stopover. Avoid the beer festival peak season to get prices about 30% cheaper. Most German hotels include breakfast, saving you a meal cost. 💰 Local budget per person for 4 days and 3 nights (excluding international flights) Economy: 3,200 yuan, comfortable: 4,500 yuan Transportation 700 + accommodation 1,100 + meals 900 + attraction tickets 500 Many free landmarks available. Pay only for core attractions you want to visit. No forced shopping or hidden fees throughout. 🍜 Affordable authentic food with generous portions and no risk ✅ Döner kebab: 5–6 euros each, a local everyday fast food, filling and well-stuffed ✅ Currywurst: 3.5–5 euros, widely available on the street, great value with fries ✅ German roasted pork knuckle set: 15 euros per serving, crispy skin, perfect for two to share ✅ Pretzels, rye bread, lentil soup: Buy from supermarkets and cook yourself, daily food cost can be as low as 80 yuan ✅ Standing coffee at street cafes is 2 euros cheaper than sitting inside. Local craft beer is reasonably priced. 📸 Must-visit spots for the four-day itinerary, half free and half premium Free hidden gems Marienplatz town hall’s hourly puppet show, English Garden, exterior of the Frauenkirche, Rothenburg old town streets, Heidelberg old bridge + Philosopher’s Walk. Great for casual European-style photos. Paid core attractions (choose as needed) 1. Neuschwanstein Castle: The model for Disney’s castle. Entry ticket 15 euros. Marienbrücke offers free panoramic photo spots. 2. Nymphenburg Palace: Munich’s royal summer palace. Gardens are free, museum tickets are moderately priced. 3. BMW Welt: Free to visit the showroom, car museum requires a separate ticket. 4. Augsburg old town: A Renaissance architecture hub, less crowded and quiet. ✨ Practical travel tips 1. Best travel months are May–June and September–October for comfortable weather and to avoid summer crowds and high prices. 2. German public transport requires ticket validation. Inspections are strict. Fines start at 60 euros for fare evasion. 3. Dress conservatively when entering churches: no bare shoulders or knees. Carry a light jacket. 4. Tap water is drinkable locally. No need to buy bottled water, saving small expenses. 5. Observe wildlife responsibly: no feeding or disturbing animals, follow park rules. Final thoughts Germany isn’t just about luxury travel. With the Bavaria ticket, budget accommodations, and simple street food, you can experience castles, old towns, lakes, and mountains all in four days. The cities are safe, orderly, and prices are friendlier than most expect. If you want to unlock authentic Western European scenery on a budget, this Bavaria short trip will change how you think about travel expenses. Definitely worth planning!

Augsburg is a small town along the Romantic Road, lined with colorful buildings typical of southern Germany. The Christmas market held in front of the Renaissance-style town hall has a truly romantic atmosphere. The big Christmas tree and Christmas pyramid were very beautiful! #wintertrip #trip2022 #germany #christmas #gourmet #coupletrip #gourmettrip #gourmetfood #tripmemory2022 #overseastrip

A cave-like restaurant in the basement of the Old Town Hall. It is located in front of the square in the old town where the Christmas market is held, and you can enjoy traditional German cuisine. Opening the heavy door, you will find a cave-like interior. This restaurant is loved by tourists and locals alike. This time, I ate Schweinebraten and Leberkäse, the ultimate German dish! It was very delicious, and the service was pleasant. #wintertrip #trip2022 #Germany #Christmas #gourmet #gourmettrip #gourmetfood #overseastrip

30 minutes by train from Munich so great for staying if you prefer smaller places. Lively Old Town with plenty of restaurants. Young City #historicallandmarks #deliciousfood#holidayvacation#staycation

Augsburg Town Hall Square, Rathausplatz, 86150 Augsburg. It takes about 40 minutes by train from Munich, and a 15-minute walk from the station gets you to the old town center. I was just passing through and intended to sit in the square for a while before leaving. I ended up staying the whole afternoon. The square isn't large. The Renaissance facade of the Town Hall faces you, and next to it is the Perlach Tower, where you can see the sea of red rooftops from the top. There are outdoor cafe seats in the square, and a cup of coffee costs just over 3 euros. An old man in overalls sat next to me with a beer in front of him, reading a newspaper for a long time. He turned the pages very slowly, as if he were doing it on purpose. Walking into the Bäckergasse alley, the cobblestone road is newly paved but narrow enough for only one bicycle. The shop owners in the alley call this a "Wohlfühlort," which translates roughly to a "place that makes you feel comfortable." I certainly felt that way when I walked in. On both sides are small optical shops, flower shops, and a handmade soap store. No one was calling out to customers; the owners were just sitting at their doorways soaking up the sun. The alley isn't long—it only takes 5 minutes to walk through—but I walked back and forth twice. Turning out of Bäckergasse leads to the Lechviertel, the Lech River district. The canals here are diverted from the Lech River; they are narrow and flow along the foundations of the houses, with small iron bridges built over them. Locals call it "Little Venice," which I think is a bit of a stretch, but the sound of the water is lovely. As I walked along the canal, a few children were squatting on a bridge looking at fish in the water, and a mother pushed a stroller past, the wheels clattering on the cobblestones. In the evening, I went to the Lug ins Land beer garden, located at Am Luginsland 5, 86152 Augsburg, right at the base of the old city wall. Chestnut trees cover the entire courtyard, and tables are set up beneath them. I ordered a local lager and a Leberkässemmel—a meatloaf sandwich—which cost a few euros and was filling. A few locals at the next table were chatting about soccer, their voices low, occasionally clinking glasses. A few practical tips: The Golden Hall of the Town Hall is closed for renovations from August 2024 to April 2026, so don't make a wasted trip. There is almost no parking in the Lechviertel, so park on the outskirts and walk in. The spots under the chestnut trees at the beer garden are the best, but you need to go early; it's basically full after 6:00 PM. Augsburg isn't the kind of city that makes you go "wow." But when you sit by the canal, listening to the water and watching people at the next table drinking beer and chatting, you'll feel that this is exactly how you should spend your time here.

The Church of St. Moritz in Augsburg is a rare example of a world-renowned artist being invited to renovate a religious building. Here, the British minimalist John Pawson took on that role.

Augsburg City Hall (Augsburger Rathaus), located on City Hall Square in the heart of Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany, is one of the city's most iconic buildings and a masterpiece of German Renaissance municipal architecture. Designed by the renowned architect Elias Holl, construction began in 1615 and was largely completed by 1620. The most famous feature inside is the Golden Hall, covering approximately 550 square meters and standing about 14 meters high. Its interior is lavishly decorated, featuring extensive use of gold elements and exquisite murals, sculptures, and wood carvings, and is considered a representative work of late German Renaissance architecture. During World War II, the City Hall suffered severe damage, with the Golden Hall almost completely destroyed. After decades of restoration, it has been restored to its former glory. The Perlachturm, located next to the City Hall, together form one of Augsburg's most iconic urban landscapes.

Located in southwestern Bavaria, Germany, at the confluence of the Lech and Wertach rivers, Augsburg has a population of around 300,000. It is the third-largest city in Bavaria and one of the oldest cities in Germany. Founded in 15 BC by the Roman Emperor Augustus, it served as a major Roman settlement within Germany. During the Middle Ages, Augsburg thrived on trade and finance, becoming a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire in 1276. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Fugger family built Europe's largest commercial and financial empire here, bringing the city to its peak. The Fuggerei, constructed in 1523, is the world's oldest social housing complex and remains preserved and in use today. The Town Hall, built in the early 17th century, is a masterpiece of German Renaissance architecture, featuring the breathtakingly ornate Golden Hall. With a history spanning a millennium, Augsburg Cathedral houses precious medieval artworks. Today, with its rich Roman heritage, medieval architecture, and unique cultural traditions, Augsburg stands as one of Germany's most historically captivating cities.

In Germany, every city is like an open fairy tale book. From Cologne’s Gothic masterpiece to Hamburg’s modern art landmarks, from Bremen’s historic streets to Essen’s hidden culinary delights, this five-day, four-night City Walk lets you deeply experience German romance and everyday charm. On the first day, arrive in Cologne and be instantly awed by the grandeur of Cologne Cathedral as you exit the station—at night, it shines like crystal, with light flowing through the stained glass, as if you’re inside a sacred temple. Admission is free, but it’s very crowded, so visiting during off-peak hours is recommended. Next to the cathedral, the Heumarkt Christmas Market is known as the “largest in Europe,” featuring a ski slope, mulled wine, and handmade crafts, creating a full winter atmosphere. On the second day, head to Düsseldorf. In the morning, visit the Museum Kunstpalast; although abstract art can be a bit obscure, a walk to the Hohenzollern Bridge offers a postcard-perfect view of the cathedral’s reflection on the river. For lunch, enjoy a feast at 0731 BBQ, where the spicy Hunan flavors are thrilling—three skewers of cauliflower in one go, bursting with fresh aroma. The Königsallee market is spacious and picturesque, with Germans gathered around fires, warm lights and laughter blending to create a festive vibe. On the third day, take the train to Hamburg, stopping in Bremen along the way. A bowl of Vietnamese pho there sparks anticipation but doesn’t compare to the stunning bowl found on Hamburg’s streets—the broth is clear, the beef tender, a delightful surprise for the taste buds. Upon arrival, head straight to the Rathausmarkt (City Hall Square), where Santa Claus parades at 4 PM, 6 PM, and 8 PM bring cheers from children and instantly rekindle childhood joy in adults. On the fourth day, focus on Hamburg’s must-see trio: climb St. Michael’s Church tower for a panoramic city view, where the wind nearly blows you away; visit the Elbphilharmonie, where only the main hall is free to enter (tickets available at the gift shop opposite), its mirrored surfaces reflecting the shimmering cityscape; and the most stunning is the “Microworld” exhibition—a two-story maze spanning two century-old buildings, showcasing everything from 17th-century microscopes to modern gene amplification, an immersive celebration of science that three hours can’t cover. On the fifth day, before heading back, arrive in Essen and find a Hunan restaurant. The dry-braised beef tendon is tender and flavorful, the stir-fried radish with cured meat is savory and crispy, the chive and dried tofu dish is perfect with rice, and even the stir-fried green peppers with pork were packed to take back to the Netherlands—this is the highest form of travel romance: taking flavors with you and leaving memories behind. Travel Tips: Always choose hotels with “free cancellation” as winter weather can be unpredictable; returning early is safer. The German Rail Pass (€49/month) allows free travel between cities, and the DB Navigator App is your mobile railway assistant. Germany · Europe

Built between 1765 and 1770 by Munich court architect Carl Albert von Lespilliez for banker and merchant Benedikt Adam von Liebert, it was later inherited by his son-in-law Johann Lorenz von Schaezler. The palace features dozens of rooms, courtyards, and gardens, with its most famous highlight being the opulent Mirror Hall (Spiegelsaal). Renowned for its gilded mirrors, elaborate stucco decorations, and murals, it is considered one of Germany's most artistically significant Rococo ballrooms.
