As the autumn breeze of the Greater Khingan Mountains brushes past The scenery outside the car window transitions from grasslands to forests Herds of cattle and sheep graze leisurely in the distance This scene is just like a living oil painting🖼️ . 🍁My travel route Day 1: Hailar → Morigele River → Ergun Day 2: Ergun → Aoluguya → Genhe City Day 3: Genhe City → Genbai Road → Mo'erdaoga Day 4: Mo'erdaoga → Shiwei → Ka Line → Heishantou Day 5: Heishantou → Border Highway → Manzhouli Day 6: Manzhouli → Hulun Lake → Arxan City Day 7: Bu Dong He → Wusulangzi Lake → Return trip

Located in Genhe City, Inner Mongolia, the Greater Khingan Range (Daxing'anling) is China’s largest primitive forest and a rare gem where you can truly immerse yourself in the soul of the Northern woods. Stepping inside, you'll be enveloped by dense coniferous forests and exceptionally fresh air. It is a cool sanctuary in summer and a serene, snow-draped wonderland in winter. Whether you’re a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or an adventure seeker, the Greater Khingan Range will not disappoint. Route Recommendation: Start your journey in Genhe City. We recommend hiring a private driver or joining a guided tour to venture deep into the heart of the forest. To fully experience the magic—from the ethereal morning mist to the silent starry nights—stay in a rustic log cabin or a specialized forestry guesthouse. A 2-3 day stay is recommended to properly explore the key landscapes and the primitive ecology. Must-Do Activities: 1. Forest Hiking: The trails are well-defined. We recommend classic routes like the "White Birch Path" or the "Tundra Route." Enjoy the shade in summer, the vibrant foliage in autumn, or join a guided snow-trekking expedition in winter. 2. Photography: Capture the "Golden Hour" at dawn or dusk. The autumn birch forests shrouded in morning mist are pure social media gold. 📸 3. Wildlife Spotting: If luck is on your side, you might spot squirrels, wild deer, or even a majestic moose in the early morning. It’s nature at its most intimate! 4. Cultural Immersion: Visit local forestry families to experience their way of life. Learn about red deer farming and try your hand at cooking traditional forest delicacies. Top Landmarks: 1. Genhe Wetland—Known as "China’s Northernmost Wetland," the sight of reeds swaying in the morning mist is both peaceful and breathtaking. 2. White Birch Forest—A fairytale-like cluster of pure white trees, perfect for portrait photography or nature shoots. 3. Winter Snowscapes—An endless expanse of pristine white, creating a magical winter wonderland. Travel Tips: 1. Temperatures fluctuate wildly between day and night. Bring layers for summer and heavy-duty thermal gear for winter. 2. Mosquitoes are relentless in summer; repellent is a must. 🦟 3. For safety, never venture deep into the forest without a professional guide. 4. Mobile signals are spotty; download offline maps beforehand. 🗺️ 5. Respect the environment: leave no trace and never pick wild mushrooms, as many are toxic. The Greater Khingan Range is a place for a deep dialogue with nature. Whether seeking a quiet escape or a wild adventure, you can find your own special Northern memories here!

🌌 Family! I saw the aurora in the northernmost part of China!!! Thinking back now, I’m still very excited. I chased the aurora for three years, and finally fulfilled my dream in Mohe. When the green light ribbons danced in the night sky, my whole body was trembling, and tears unknowingly flowed down. That feeling is truly unforgettable for a lifetime. ✈️ Why choose to go to Mohe in July Many people say you have to go in winter to see the aurora, but that’s not necessarily true. I chose early July, right around the summer solstice. Although the chance of seeing the aurora is lower than in winter, there’s a huge advantage—it’s not cold! In winter, Mohe can be minus 30 to 40 degrees Celsius, and staying outside for half an hour is freezing, making aurora photography very tough. But summer is different, with daytime temperatures in the twenties Celsius and nighttime in the teens, just a jacket is enough, making the aurora chase experience much better. Plus, July has the midnight sun! That magical phenomenon where it’s still bright at 11 p.m. and bright again at 2 a.m., with over 20 hours of daylight in a day—truly magical. 📍 Where I stayed: Arctic Village To see the aurora, you definitely have to stay in Arctic Village, the northernmost village in China and the best spot for aurora viewing. I booked a homestay a month in advance, a small wooden cabin with a carved log style, very atmospheric. The homestay owner is an aurora enthusiast who created a light-chasing group. Every night, he posts the KP index in the group and wakes everyone up when there’s a sign of aurora. I was woken up by the owner at 3 a.m., saying the KP index reached 5, so there might be aurora. Half asleep, I got up, put on my jacket, and ran to the riverbank. There were already quite a few people there, all quietly waiting, no one talking, as if afraid to disturb the aurora. 🌠 The moment I saw the aurora After waiting about 40 minutes, I was almost frozen and ready to leave when someone suddenly shouted, "It’s here!" I looked up and saw a faint green light on the horizon, like mist, slowly drifting upward. Then it got brighter and wider, starting to dance like ribbons. Honestly, my mind went blank, and I just thought, "This is amazing." Can you imagine? In the pitch-black night sky, green light dancing, below is the Heilongjiang River, and across is Russia. The feeling was so unreal, like a dream. I held up my phone to take pictures, but the photos looked nothing like what I saw—just a faint green line, unable to capture the shock. So I stopped taking pictures and just stood there watching, trying hard to imprint this moment in my mind. The aurora lasted about 20 minutes, gradually fading away. Everyone was very excited, sharing photos, some hugging and crying. I cried too, not sure why, just deeply moved. 📝 Aurora chasing tips (all practical) Sharing some experience for sisters who want to chase the aurora, all pitfalls I’ve encountered: 1. Download an aurora forecast app: I used Aurora Forecast, which shows the KP index. The higher the KP, the greater the chance of aurora. Usually, KP3 or above means possible sightings. 2. Find a good homestay: Choose one with an aurora wake-up service. Setting your own alarm is hard, and you might miss it. 3. Bring a tripod: For phone aurora photos, a tripod is a must with long exposure mode, otherwise, you can’t capture it. 4. Dress warmly: Although it’s summer, it’s still quite cold at dawn, especially by the river with strong wind. Bring a thick jacket. 5. Keep a good mindset: Seeing the aurora really depends on luck. Some see it on their first trip, others don’t after many tries. Stay calm. 6. Stay away from lights: To see the aurora, go somewhere dark. Village lights are too bright and affect viewing. The riverbank is the best spot. 🌞 What to do during the day Besides chasing the aurora, there are many fun things to do during the day: The northernmost post office: You can send postcards to friends with the northernmost postmark, very memorable. I sent one to myself, and it’s still on my desk. Shenzhou Arctic Monument: A must-visit for photos, the "I found the North" monument, very popular and often crowded. Jiejiang River cruise: Take a boat on the Heilongjiang River, opposite is a Russian village where you can see their houses and chimneys—very fascinating. Arctic Sandbar: A small island with many "northernmost" landmarks, like the northernmost toilet and outpost, quite interesting. 💭 Final thoughts This trip to Mohe was not just a journey for me, but a dream come true. I remember seeing aurora photos online three years ago and longing for it, thinking it was the most beautiful thing in the world. Back then, I wondered when I could see it with my own eyes. I never expected that three years later, I would stand on the northernmost land of China and see the aurora I had been dreaming of. So you see, as long as you have a wish in your heart, one day it will come true. If you also have an aurora dream, don’t wait, set off. Whether you see it or not, the journey itself is beautiful enough. · -- Accommodation 🏨 Sanmo Sanke · Shiye Zhiyou Hotel A boutique hotel with a private 20,000 square meter park, Nordic design, smart room control, pet-friendly, attentive butler service, the top choice for high-end stays in Arctic Village. 🏨 Moye · Starry Dream Extreme Beauty Homestay (Arctic Village Northernmost Post Office Branch) A newly opened stylish homestay next to the northernmost post office, with great design and excellent audio-visual rooms, a perfect choice to explore the extreme north scenery. 🏨 Arctic Village Igloo Cabin A unique wooden cabin homestay by the military road, excellent views, rich activities, offers airport pickup, an authentic Daxing’anling wooden cabin experience. 🏨 Once Slow · Xiaoman Homestay (Mohe Arctic Village Branch) A forest-style homestay founded by a Xiamen landscape designer, made with local old items and forest resources, full of artistic atmosphere, 8 cozy and comfortable rooms. · --

Finally understand why some say Hulunbuir is perfect for solo travel~ Because when you stand in the middle of the grassland, surrounded by green in every direction, those few hours when no one knows you and no one is looking for you are more relaxing than any trip. . Don't want to see crowds during the May Day holiday? Hulunbuir Grassland is just waking up in spring! 🔥In May, tender grass sprouts and migratory birds return north. There are no peak-season crowds, tickets are easy to buy, accommodation is affordable, and the entire grassland feels like it's all yours! Follow this 5-day, 4-night itinerary, with a cap of 2K per person, offering incredible value for money. 5-Day, 4-Night Itinerary 🚗DAY1 Hailar → Morigele River Land in Hailar and head straight for the "First Winding River," the Morigele River. In spring, the river thaws, and its numerous bends shimmer with golden light, winding through the grassland like a silver ribbon. Climb to the vantage point of the cliff to overlook the panoramic view – a place Genghis Khan called "where the secret of eternal heaven is hidden." In the evening, check into a grassland container hotel, with river sunsets visible right outside your floor-to-ceiling window. 📸DAY2 Ergun Wetland → Aoluguya Reindeer Tribe In the morning, visit the Ergun Wetland, Asia's wetland, where yellow and green intertwine in spring, and the sunset at Genhe Horseshoe Bend is absolutely stunning. In the afternoon, head to Aoluguya – China's only reindeer-herding tribe and its last hunting tribe! Spend 20 yuan on a basket of moss to interact with the reindeer up close, feeding and watering them. Their gentle nudges as they eat from your hand are incredibly therapeutic, and your photos will look like a fairytale from the forest. 🏘️DAY3 Enhe Russian Ethnic Township Journey through the Greater Khingan Mountains' birch forests, where new, tender green leaves adorn the branches. Arrive in Enhe Russian Ethnic Township in the evening, stay in a blue and white Russian-style log cabin, enjoy homemade cream and wild honey, and listen to an uncle play the accordion, experiencing the unique charm of blended Chinese and Russian cultures. 🐎DAY4 Heishantou → Border Line In the morning, traverse the border defense line, driving along the Ergun River, the Sino-Russian border river. The road is free of cars and tourists, with only the wind, clouds, and grazing horses. Arrive in Heishantou in the afternoon to experience horseback riding on the grassland, chasing the sunset, and visiting a herder's home to enjoy milking cows and feeding lambs. Spend the night in a yurt and gaze up at the Milky Way! 🪆DAY5 Manzhouli → Return to Hailar In the morning, visit Manzhouli Matryoshka Square, where the giant matryoshka castle resembles a fairytale world. In the evening, head to Suanmazhuang Cliff on the west bank of Hulun Lake. The cliff against the lake at sunset makes for incredible photos, and you can even pick up agates on the shore as souvenirs. Fly back to Hailar in the evening. 💡Spring Must-Knows May temperatures range from 5-20℃ (41-68°F), so layering is key: during the day, wear a vintage plaid coat or a long dress with a shawl; in the evening, add a light down jacket + windbreaker, and temperatures dropping below freezing won't be an issue. Bring sunglasses and SPF50+ sunscreen; the plateau's UV rays are very strong! --- Don't wait for peak season; while the crowds are small and the scenery is beautiful, go and embrace the entire spring grassland! 🌸

Just finished a 5-day, 4-night spring wind-chasing trip, and here’s a guide you can copy directly! --- ⏰ Why must you go in May? Unbeatable value! Airfare and hotel prices are slashed, starting at just 2,500 RMB per person. The best part is the unique “spring-only” experience: 🍃 5 days and 4 nights of an essential loop route (no backtracking) Day 1 Hailar → Morigele River → Erguna Land and head straight to the “First Meandering River”! May is the ice-breaking season, with the ice cracking into spiderweb-like patterns, spring water flowing with broken ice. Head straight to the cliff viewing platform to overlook the nine bends and eighteen turns, the air filled with the scent of thawing earth. The southern bank area of the scenic spot is free and open to self-driving in May, no long queues for sightseeing buses. Stay overnight at the Erguna wooden log cabin guesthouse, and don’t miss buying a 5 RMB Tieshan cold drink fresh milk ice cream at the wetland entrance, a local childhood favorite. Day 2 Erguna Wetland → Birch Forest → Enhe In the morning, check in at the “Asian Wetland.” The river thaws in May, migratory birds return in flocks, and with a telephoto lens, you can easily capture stunning “Grassland Swan Lake” shots. At noon, wander through the Daxing’anling birch forest, where tender buds are just sprouting, silver-white trunks paired with fresh green leaves create a dappled light effect that’s breathtaking. In the afternoon, arrive at Enhe, China’s only Russian ethnic township, and stay in a fully wooden mortise-and-tenon “wooden log cabin” house. Learn to make rye bread with a Russian grandmother, dipping it in freshly made wild blueberry jam, surrounded by the scent of pine wood. Day 3 Border Checkpoint Line → Heishantou (the highlight of the trip!) Drive along the Sino-Russian border river on the G331 “checkpoint” highway, with grasslands on the left and Russia on the right, smoke rising from villages visible to the naked eye across the river. If lucky during the spring ice-breaking period, witness the “ice floe race” — layers of floating ice clashing with crisp sounds. In the evening, ride a horse up Heishantou sunset hill (spring prices are half of summer’s), hooves stepping on newly green grass, the sunset turning the entire grassland golden. Spend the night in a starry sky Mongolian yurt, with the Milky Way overhead. Day 4 Heishantou → Manzhouli In the morning, visit a herder’s home. May is lambing season, so you can hold newborn, wobbly lambs and milk cows by hand, a truly healing experience. In the afternoon, enter the fairy-tale border city of Manzhouli. The Matryoshka Doll Square is dazzlingly golden; the main doll is 30 meters tall, with three painted sides representing Chinese, Russian, and Mongolian girls. At night, Zhong-Soviet Street lights up with golden lamps, instantly turning into the “Little Paris of the East.” Enjoy a meal of Russian cuisine with cheese buns stretching half a meter long. Day 5 Hulun Lake · Genghis Khan’s Horse Tethering Stone → Return to Hailar ✨ A secret must-visit spot! This is a white cliff on the west bank of Hulun Lake, surrounded by water on three sides. About 10 meters east of the cliff in the lake stands an irregular stone pillar about 10 meters high, with crisscrossing stone veins. Legend says it’s where Genghis Khan tethered his beloved eight horses. No entrance fee, no commercial atmosphere, the white cliff paired with blue lake water and endless grassland has been described as “where the grassland ends, the sea begins.” In May, the lake’s blue ice is half melted, with transparent blue ice piled on the shore, stunningly beautiful in the sunlight. Return to Hailar in the afternoon and buy two bags of freshly made wild blueberry jam to wrap up the trip. 📸 Outfit and Tips for Photos Wear light-colored or solid-color long dresses (white/red are the best) to create a stunning contrast with the fresh green grassland; the light is softest after 4 PM. May temperatures range from 5-20°C with a big day-night temperature difference, so onion-style layering with a sweatshirt, light down jacket, and windproof shell is safest. Don’t forget sunglasses, SPF50+ sunscreen, high-moisture face cream, and lip balm — the grassland wind is strong and UV rays intense, wind protection is more important than rain protection. Spring fire prevention period (3.15-6.15) strictly forbids open flames outdoors; some roads are muddy from melting snow, so an SUV with four-wheel drive is recommended, and download offline maps in advance. We recommend "onion-style" layering: base layer + light down jacket + windproof shell. White, red, or denim colors look best in photos. 🛡️ Sun Protection: The UV rays on the grasslands are very strong. Sunglasses, SPF50+ sunscreen, and lip balm are essential! 🚗 Transportation Advice: We recommend renting an off-road vehicle (approx. 500-700 RMB/day), as some dirt roads are impassable for sedans. There's no signal in the mountains, so download offline maps in advance. 🔥 Fire Safety Reminder: From March 15th to June 15th is the spring fire prevention period. Smoking and barbecuing are strictly prohibited in grasslands and forest areas. Do not drive over the grasslands. ⚠️ Exclusive reminder for loyal readers: Do not add private WeChat accounts to prevent fraud. Safety first! Compared to the crowded summer, Hulunbuir in spring is quieter and more dreamlike – staying one night costs 200-400 RMB, you get to have the grasslands to yourself, and watch flocks of migratory birds. This sense of freedom is simply unforgettable!! Go now before it gets too popular~

Hulunbuir isn't just for summer—in May, it offers an ultimate romance that's both resilient and gentle. With the ice and snow just melting and migratory birds returning, the entire grassland seems to have just entered 'spring awakening mode.' While the summer crowds are still planning their trips, savvy travelers have already 'claimed' the spring grasslands. Keep this guide handy and enjoy this secret paradise before the crowds arrive ✈️ ⏰ Itinerary: A five-day itinerary with no backtracking, and about three hours of travel each day—no rushing, just sightseeing. Day 1: Hailar → Morigele River → Ergun Upon landing in Hailar, head straight to the Morigele River. In spring, the river has just thawed, and its winding course sparkles like scattered silver on the newly green grasslands. If you bring a drone, the aerial view will instantly erase all your fatigue. The next day, visit the Ergun Wetland, an Asian wetland where, after the ice and snow melt, the meandering river channels wrap around the land like ribbons, and flocks of migratory birds stop to rest—bring a telephoto lens, and encounters are more than just luck. 🏡 Day 2: Birch Forest → Enhe Russian Ethnic Village In the morning, explore the Birch Forest. In the season when new buds are just emerging, the dappled light creates a natural studio for fresh, artistic photos. Arrive in Enhe in the evening and stay in a traditional Mukelen log cabin (choose one with heating), falling asleep to the scent of pine. If you happen to catch the Paskha Festival in late April or early May, with its melodious button accordion music and exchanged blessed eggs, the lively spring atmosphere of this Russian ethnic village holds an even more special memory. 🌾 Day 3: Shiwei → Border Defense Road → Heishantou This day is full of highlights. Drive along the border defense road (Seven Card - Nine Card) that follows the Ergun River, the border river between China and Russia. To your left are the newly awakened grasslands, and to your right is the calm border river, with smoke from Russian villages visible on the opposite bank. There are almost no vehicles along the way, only wind, clouds, and herds of grazing horses. In the evening, ascend Heishantou Sunset Hill, riding horses up the mountain. The glow of the setting sun on the re-greening grasslands creates silhouettes so beautiful they'll leave you speechless. I especially recommend the grassland sunset at Heishantou—it's incredibly therapeutic. 🦌 Day 4: Aoluguya Reindeer Tribe → Moerdaoga National Forest Park Deep into the Greater Khingan Mountains, first visit Aoluguya to explore the last reindeer tribe—mid-April to late May is the peak season for reindeer calving, and the fawns are incredibly cute. Experience the warmth of feeding them moss. In the afternoon, head to Moerdaoga National Forest Park, China's last pristine cold-temperate bright coniferous forest. Take a forest train through the vast sea of trees; this 1-hour and 40-minute retro journey slowly unfolds the tranquil scenery of the Greater Khingan Mountains. The four scenic stops each offer unique views—the Scots pines are tall and straight, the birches are fresh, and little squirrels peek out along the way, creating a shared moment of healing for adults and children. The train ticket package includes admission, and there are also discounted combinations for a self-driving plus train experience. 🌅 Day 5: 186 Ribbon River → Manzhouli Matryoshka Square The grass sliding experience at 186 Ribbon River is still bright and clear in the spring grasslands—the slightly shorter grass in May makes for a more thrilling slide, overlooking the river valley as it flows like a colorful ribbon. Arrive in Manzhouli in the afternoon, where the city is adorned with magnificent Russian-style architecture. After the golden lights illuminate the city, the aroma of hawthorn skewers from the night market intertwines with the scent of Russian Western cuisine, proving that the city's reputation as the "Oriental Little Paris" is well-deserved. 📌 Travel Tips: May temperatures range from 5℃ to 20℃, so dress in layers—a sweatshirt + light down jacket + windbreaker combination, allowing you to wear less or bundle up. The temperature difference between morning and evening is significant, so don't skimp on hats, sunglasses, and lip balm. Spring is fire prevention season (March 15th - June 15th), so forget about bonfires deep in the grasslands. The grassland UV rays should not be underestimated; reapply high-SPF sunscreen frequently, and bring insect repellent. In spring, the Morigele River scenic area offers free admission and can be accessed directly by car. Accommodation prices are only one-third of the peak season, and the total cost for a five-day car rental with driver is approximately 2500 to 3000 RMB. Spring in Hulunbuir offers a freedom that summer doesn't. The grass hasn't grown tall yet, the wind still carries a slight chill; there are no crowded throngs, only vast grasslands, clean air, and a road entirely open for you. For those interested in spring travel outfits or photo spots, feel free to plan ahead~ ✨

When night falls, the golden lights turn it into the “Little Paris of the East.” Day 5: Hulun Lake Genghis Khan Horse Tethering Stake → Return A hidden gem you must visit! This is a cliff on the west bank of Hulun Lake, surrounded by water on three sides. Some say it looks like “the grassland ends and the sea begins.” White cliffs + blue lake water + endless grassland—take a sunset photo of a lifetime here. Visiting at this time means having the entire grassland all to yourself 🌿 📅 Itinerary Day 1: Hailar—Morigele River—Erguna Cross the "First Meandering River," where in April the ice cracks on the river surface form a blue-green jade mosaic, and the grassy mounds on the shore are topped with lingering snow, like matcha cakes dusted with powdered sugar 🍵 📸 Photo spot: Cliff mountain overlooking the river’s nine bends and eighteen turns Day 2: Erguna—Genhe—Aoluguya Spring arrives late in China’s coldest region; you can still hear the crunch of snow underfoot in the birch forest.
