Stayed at Life Hotel in Guilin, and the aftereffects are strong
🌿 Guilin's summer hides the Chinese dream of mountains and rivers
This is my third time in Guilin, and I finally found the right way to experience Guilin — not going to the crowded West Street, not waiting two hours for a bamboo raft, but diving into those local hidden mountains and waters to enjoy a few days of cool 25℃ summer. This article is full of practical tips, off-the-beaten-path spots, photo locations, food maps, and exclusive pitfall avoidance guides. Just save this one!
🏞️ Those underrated hidden scenic spots
📍 Dawei Ancient Town & Dongli Ancient Village
A Ming and Qing dynasty ancient village 100 times quieter than Yangshuo! Stone slab roads, old docks, century-old banyan trees, and bamboo rafts drifting on the Li River — even photos taken with a phone look like ink paintings. In the evening, go to the bamboo raft dock by the Li River to watch fishermen paddle past the sunset; the scene is truly beautiful. The ancient village also has various artisan workshops where you can try blacksmithing, weaving, and pottery — super interesting.
📍 Peach Blossom Land
Don’t go with tour groups anymore! Locals go before 9 AM or after 3 PM when the tour groups have left, enjoying complete tranquility. Take a small boat through the "mysterious cave," and you really feel a sense of "sudden enlightenment." Su’s Garden, Dong ethnic drum towers, pastoral scenery, and Zhuang ethnic sisters singing mountain songs — isn’t this the Peach Blossom Land described by Tao Yuanming?
📍 Guihai Qinglan
Known as the "Guilin version of Erhai Lake," a city secret! Lake views + big lawn + camping. Come here on weekends for picnics, kite flying, and photos — super comfortable. The key point: very few people, huge lawn, run and shoot freely, it feels like being in Switzerland.
📍 Lingchuan Haiyang Township
Don’t think Haiyang Township is only about autumn ginkgo! Summer in Haiyang is a summer resort with bamboo forests all over the hills, temperatures 5℃ lower than downtown. The village’s creek is crystal clear, perfect for playing in the water, catching fish and crabs, plus various farmhouse dishes — ideal for weekend family trips.
🛶 The right way to experience the Li River
❌ Stop taking the big cruise boats!
Big cruise boats are crowded, expensive, and don’t stop for photos, so you can’t truly experience the beauty of the Li River. Trust me, this is how to enjoy the Li River:
✅ Correct way 1: Hiking from Xingping Fishing Village
Start from Xingping Ancient Town and hike 5 km along the Li River to the fishing village. The path is flat and easy, with stunning scenery that’s the background of the 20 RMB note. Very few people, you can take photos freely, and when tired, sit by the river and play in the water. This immersive experience is 100 times better than taking a boat!
✅ Correct way 2: Yulong River manual bamboo raft
You must take a manually paddled bamboo raft! Don’t take the electric ones! The bamboo rafts on Yulong River are the most beautiful in Guilin, with crystal-clear water and phoenix tail bamboo swaying on both banks. The boatman paddles slowly and explains things, and when reaching shallow spots, you can stop to play in the water — so relaxing.
✅ Correct way 3: Li River morning mist
Wake up at 5:30 AM and go to Xingping dock to see the Li River morning mist! Before sunrise, the river is shrouded in mist, fishermen paddle bamboo rafts with fishing lamps, casting nets — the scene looks like a fairyland. This is the true Li River landscape!
📸 Ultimate Guilin photo guide
🏔️ How to shoot mountain and water masterpieces
1. Time: 1 hour after sunrise / 1 hour before sunset for the best light
2. Angle: Shoot from a low angle to capture both mountains and reflections
3. Composition: Use foreground elements (trees, bamboo, stones) to frame the scenery
4. Clothing: Wear white, light colors, or red for strong contrast with green
📍 Exclusive photo spots
· Xianggong Mountain: panoramic view of the first bend of the Li River, stunning at sunrise
· Laozhai Mountain: panoramic view of Xingping, tiring to climb but worth it
· Wulong Spring: Yulong River reflections, mirror-like effect is beautiful
· Tianxin Village: Guilin’s version of "small bridges, flowing water, and people’s homes," very charming
🍵 Guilin slow life experience
☕ Riverside afternoon tea
Find a café by the Li River, sit outdoors, feel the river breeze, drink coffee, watch the distant mountains and passing bamboo rafts — this slow life is truly healing. Recommended: Riverside afternoon tea at Tangshe Hotel, the environment is beautiful.
🎋 Bamboo forest tea tasting
Go to a tea house in the bamboo forest by the Yulong River, drink a cup of Guilin Maojian tea, listen to the wind rustling bamboo leaves, watch the river flow quietly — time slows down.
🌙 Night tour of Two Rivers and Four Lakes
The Two Rivers and Four Lakes at night are stunning! Bright lights reflect on the water, like walking into an ancient Jiangnan water town. You can take a boat or stroll along the riverbank; the evening breeze is very pleasant.
🍜 In-depth food map
🥢 Local breakfast
· Rice noodles: must go to old shops in alleys, eat dry-mixed style
· Youcha (oil tea): Gongcheng oil tea served with puffed rice and sesame balls, gets more fragrant the more you drink
· Glutinous rice: Guilin glutinous rice with sausage and crispy toppings, super fragrant
🍲 What to eat for main meals
· Beer fish: must use Jianyu fish from the Li River, tender and boneless
· Stuffed snails: snails stuffed with meat, Guilin specialty, very flavorful
· Lipu taro with braised pork: soft, sweet, rich but not greasy
· Ginkgo stewed old duck: clears heat and relieves summer heat, a must-drink in summer
🍧 Desserts & snacks
· Guilin cold jelly: handmade jelly with brown sugar syrup, very refreshing
· Water chestnut cake: chewy, sweet, Guilin specialty snack
· Sour: Guilin sour pickles, various fruits pickled sour, appetizing and refreshing
⚠️ Ultimate Guilin pitfall avoidance guide
1. Don’t buy things on West Street
West Street’s specialties, silver jewelry, and jade are overpriced traps. For souvenirs, go to city supermarkets.
2. Don’t buy bamboo raft tickets at the dock
Buy from guesthouse owners or locals, 30% cheaper and no queues.
3. Don’t trust roadside touts
Those saying "100 RMB Li River tour" are scams and will take you shopping.
4. Ask prices before eating in scenic spots
Especially beer fish, sold by weight — clarify prices before ordering.
5. Don’t join one-day tours
Too many shopping stops, little time to play. Independent travel is the way to go.
Guilin is truly a place you never get tired of no matter how many times you visit. Every time there are new discoveries and surprises. The mountains and rivers here really have a healing power. June has fewer people and beautiful scenery — hurry and experience Guilin’s 25℃ summer!
