Heihe is beautiful, but I really don't recommend visiting in September–October
Just got back from Heihe! To be honest, this small border town has an incredible atmosphere. You can see two countries across one river, the Russian vibe is everywhere, and the autumn scenery is stunning. However, visiting in September–October can be a real struggle. With sudden temperature drops, constant strong winds, and scattered attractions, your travel experience will suffer if you don't do your homework. I've compiled all the tips and pitfalls I learned so you can just follow this guide if you're planning a trip✨
📍Heihe, Heilongjiang (Aihui District)
🚗Transportation tips
Long-distance: High-speed rail to Heihe South Station is the priority; it's a 3–4 hour trip from Harbin. Travelers from other regions can also fly into Heihe Aihui Airport.
Local travel: Taxis in the Aihui urban area start at 6 yuan. Taking a taxi to explore the riverside, Central Street, and the morning/night markets is very cost-effective. Buses also cover the main points in the city.
⚠️Important reminder: Wudalianchi is very far from downtown Heihe—over 100 km. I don't recommend taking a regular bus as it's a hassle. If you want to go, prioritize legitimate carpooling or renting a car. Don't take unlicensed taxis at the station entrance, as they often overcharge.
Carry your ID card with you for border travel, as some locations will check it.
🏨Accommodation tips
✅Around Central Street/Heilongjiang riverside in Aihui District | 140–260r
This is the top choice! You'll be right next to Russian goods shops and restaurants. You can walk to Heilongjiang Park and Daheihe Island, and the night/morning markets are very close. It's super convenient for dining and getting around, with plenty of chain hotels and guesthouses to choose from.
✅Riverside hotels | 320–550r
If you have the budget, choose a room with a river view. You can look out at the city on the other side right from your bed, and the sunset view is stunning. Try to book in advance for September–October.
❌I don't recommend staying in Wudalianchi town unless you are specifically there to visit the volcano scenic area, as commuting back and forth to the city takes a lot of time.
💡Temperatures fluctuate wildly between day and night in September–October. Prioritize rooms with good insulation and heating. It's windy by the river, and it will feel even colder at night.
💰Budget reference (3 days, 2 nights, excluding long-distance travel)
650–900r per person
Overall, the cost of living isn't high. Expenses mainly go toward accommodation, food, attraction tickets, and carpooling.
Dining is very affordable, and portions of Northeast Chinese cuisine are huge—sharing meals saves money. Border cruises and carpooling to distant suburbs are the main extra expenses.
🍜Food recommendations (avoid overpriced tourist traps)
✔️Iron pot stew: The soul of Northeast cuisine. Stewed chicken or fish with corn flatbread cooked on the side of the pot. It's steaming hot and especially comforting in autumn and winter. I recommend finding an old restaurant in a residential area for authentic portions.
✔️Russian borscht + pot-stewed beef: A border specialty with authentic flavors. Pair it with "Dalieba" (Russian-style bread) to experience exotic flavors. No need to blindly choose popular internet-famous restaurants.
✔️Russian-style skewers: Thick chunks of meat, charcoal-grilled with a rich aroma. One bite is super satisfying.
✔️Wild mountain vegetable dumplings: A local specialty with fresh, crisp fillings. A great way to cleanse your palate after eating too much meat.
✔️Blueberry products, smoked red sausage: You can buy these as souvenirs, but compare prices before purchasing.
💡Try to avoid restaurants at the entrance of scenic spots. Head into the streets and alleys of the old town for more authentic flavors at lower prices.
📸Must-visit recommendations
▪Daheihe Island 📍Aihui District, free admission
Only 750 meters from Russia. Check in at the National Flag Square on the island, look across the river at the city on the other side, and take a cruise along the border river. The golden sunset on the water is perfect for photos. Remember to bring your ID for verification.
▪Heilongjiang Bridge Park 📍Aihui District, free
The China-Russia cross-border bridge is here. Climb the sightseeing tower to overlook the bridge and the scenery on both sides of the border river. It's best to come in the evening; walking and watching the sunset is very healing.
▪Heilongjiang Park (Mother Square) 📍Aihui District
Walk along the riverside promenade, check in at Boundary Marker No. 192, stroll along the river, feel the river breeze, and experience the slow pace of this border town. Open all day for free.
▪Aihui History Museum
A half-hour drive from the city center. It's worth taking the time to visit and learn about border history. I suggest setting aside 1.5–2 hours for the tour.
▪Wenhua Street International Morning Market
You must get up early to visit! There's shouting in both Chinese and Russian, and all kinds of Northeast breakfast foods and mountain goods. You might even run into Russian tourists. The atmosphere is vibrant. Try to go in the morning, as they pack up by noon.
⚠️Why visiting in September–October can be a struggle
1. The temperature drops sharply! It's 10–20°C during the day but drops to single digits at night. It feels even colder when it's windy. You need to pack both short sleeves and thick jackets, or you'll easily catch a cold.
2. The wind by the river is very strong, which will mess up your hair, and walking by the river for a long time will freeze your face.
3. Attractions are scattered. Wudalianchi and Aihui Ancient City are far from the main urban area, so traveling back and forth consumes a lot of energy.
4. Autumn weather is changeable, often cloudy and foggy. If it's foggy, the view across the river will be greatly diminished.
💡Travel tips
1. Layering is a must! A thin hoodie + a windproof thick jacket is the standard outfit. It's best to bring a hat and scarf; wind protection by the river is crucial.
2. Always carry your ID card. Many border locations will verify your identity, so don't forget it.
3. Book legitimate carpooling for Wudalianchi in advance; don't trust people soliciting passengers on the roadside.
4. You must go to the morning market early; most stalls close around noon.
5. The humidity by the river is high, and your skin can easily get dry, so moisturize well.
6. Check the weather for cruise projects. Cruises will stop operating in high winds, so you can inquire before you head out.
✨Heartfelt conclusion
Although the strong winds and cooling temperatures in Heihe during September–October can be tough, the unique border scenery of the northern frontier is irreplaceable🌾.
The rushing border river, exotic architecture, hot iron pot stew, and the shock of seeing two countries at a glance are experiences hard to find in other cities.
As long as you plan your outfits in advance, arrange your itinerary reasonably, and avoid rushing blindly, you can unlock the unique romance of this treasure border town. It is truly worth the trip!
