(However, the hotel in Stockholm included a free breakfast.) 🏨 Scandic Helsinki Aviacongress 📍Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮 (near Helsinki Airport) Since the first day's plan was only to visit a sauna facility after arriving in Helsinki and then depart early the next morning for Copenhagen, I chose this hotel near the airport. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus to and from the airport, which operates from early morning. Although it's far from Helsinki city center, there is a bus stop near the hotel that provides access to the city. The room was clean and spacious. The price was also affordable, making it a great choice for those with a similar schedule. 🏨 Copenhagen Island Hotel 📍Copenhagen, Denmark 🇩🇰 Hotel prices in Copenhagen were generally higher compared to other cities, possibly because it was a Saturday. Since I planned to take a bus to Stockholm the next day, I chose this hotel for its proximity to the bus terminal and reasonable price. The hotel is close to the station and bus stops, and it's just one stop away from the central station, making transportation convenient. Although I only passed through on my way to the station, there is a shopping mall next to the hotel. The room was clean and well-maintained. 🏨 Queen's Hotel by First Hotels 📍Stockholm, Sweden 🇸🇪 I searched for a hotel close to Stockholm Central Station and affordable. Although it seemed a bit far to walk from the central station and the hotel appeared slightly old, I booked it with the mindset that it was just for one night's sleep and it wouldn't matter much if it wasn't great. In the end, the distance was walkable even with luggage, and the roads weren't too bumpy, so there were no issues. The room was simple yet clean, with enough space to spread out luggage. The elevator was an old-fashioned manual type, which added a European charm. The free breakfast was also a nice bonus. 🏨 Ivalo River Camping 📍Ivalo, Finland 🇫🇮 For the three days of aurora viewing, I wanted to stay at a place with an aurora hut on the last day, so I chose this place for the first two nights to save costs. Although I had never stayed in a cottage before and was a bit worried about the shared toilet and shower facilities outside the cottage, they were very clean and well-maintained, so there were no issues. Note that bed linens and towels are charged separately from the accommodation fee (€12/person, quite expensive). There is also a laundry room with a washing machine and dryer (€15/3 hours, though I didn't use it as I brought my own detergent). Kamppi Station has the Kamppi Center, a large shopping mall with stores like Marimekko and supermarkets. The supermarket stays open relatively late, which was helpful when I was short on time. Near the central station, there is also a 24-hour supermarket. The location is excellent for sightseeing in Helsinki, and the hotel is stylish and charming with a Nordic vibe.

The address is Tammiston kauppatie 10, it’s in the other end of a huge Plantagen Flower shop. You don’t need any equipment to try and there are suitable walls for every skill level. Admission for one person is 12 euros (2022). If you are a member, you can also use the gym located in the same premises. The Clarion hotel is a lovely hotel that's only a 5 mins taxi ride, 5 mins train ride or 20 min walk from Helsinki airport. The hotel is hip and modern and the rooms are cozy and many feature great views. It's very quiet around the area so dining options are limited. However the hotel also boasts a nice gym, and a comfortable sauna. Breakfast is also included and it is in a buffet style with many options to choose from. If you find yourself connecting through Helsinki airport, you're in a for a treat. The airport is home to Finnair, but countless other carriers also serve it. The Schengen area is more of the traditional styled airports however the non Schengen side is the real gem. Usually airports are dull and you can't wait to get out of them. However, Helsinki airport was a joy to be in, even for 5 hours. First, the airport is spacious, modern and clean. Second, there are countless amenities catered to different tastes. For instance, there are different chairs: from rocking chairs to flat bed like seats. There is also drinking water available throughout the terminal. One of my favorites, however are the giant screens that show different scenes and sounds from Finland's nature. This coupled with outside the normal rush hours offers a very calm and quiet stay at this airport. All in all, a smooth and calming experience; something that airports are not always known for. #airport #helsinki

Helsinki is quite a bike friendly city. There are numerous bike paths that run into and out of the city. In fact I'd you have time and are up for the challenge, you can even bike from Helsinki airport to the city center. Let me warn you: it is quite challenging! Nonetheless, the whole journey is done on bike paths, so it's extremely safe. It's simply quite long; around 20 km and a good 2+ hrs. Along the way, however, you pass through some lovely Finnish landscapes that are so relaxing and calming. You'll see flower fields and rivers, which add some variety to your journey. These are really pretty and relaxing to enjoy especially in summer. You really get a sense of Finland as you also pass through several residential areas and parks. I recommend doing this trek in summer when it's nice outside and the weather is warmer. Remember however to bring a windbreaker in case and plenty of water. You can stop and enjoy the lovely scenes on the way so resting isn't an issue. You'll be able to enjoy nature while getting into the city in an economical, healthy and non polluting way.

I just remembered an interesting experience we had staying overnight in a Finnish hotel, where we didn't meet a single person. By the way, this might come in handy in the future, remember! This hotel (though it's called a hostel, it's essentially a cheap hotel) is located near Helsinki Vantaa Airport – you can walk there if you want, but the free airport bus is better. In 2019, a one-night stay at this hotel cost us 5,335 rubles, which is quite inexpensive for Finland! I don't remember how much it was in euros. I booked it in rubles at Ostrovok. Other hotels near the airport cost around 10,000 rubles/night. We needed to spend the night after our flight (arriving around 12 midnight) and then take the LuxExpress bus to St. Petersburg in the morning. By the time we landed and picked up our luggage, it was already past midnight. An empty (!!!) bus pulled up to a deserted bus stop. We were using the GPS to navigate: it wasn't entirely clear which stop to get off at. But in the night, in an unfamiliar Finnish forest, the hostel looked pretty epic. The most interesting and scary part: checking in. Scary not because we were physically afraid, but because we were worried about whether it would work out. The text message with the door code arrived an hour before the estimated check-in time (it was 4:00 PM Finnish time, so it arrived around 3:00 PM). I was really worried about whether the text message would arrive at all, and whether we'd be able to get in with the code. I wouldn't want to be stuck with big suitcases on the road among the pine trees at night :) We checked in! By the way, the room also requires a personal password. It was clearly written at the entrance: enter the code from the text message! There were some other panels with numbers, but that definitely wasn't for us. And then – a perfectly clean hotel for one night. The most amazing thing about it all was that we didn't meet anyone at all, not a single person! Not at night, not in the morning when we checked out. And the night was profoundly quiet – no conversations behind the wall, no noise from suitcase wheels... Simply NO ONE. It was very strange and the first time I can remember. We arrived, entered the code, spent the night, checked out in the morning – and the whole time, not a single living soul was there! Amazing!
