Must-eat in Hakodate | A century-old sausage shop that witnessed the "Japan-Germany friendship" On the Osanzaka in Hakodate, there is a German building with an outer wall surrounded by ivy. It is a long-established sausage shop opened by the German Raymond in 1925. It uses high-quality pork produced in the province and is made with authentic German craftsmanship. The first floor consists of a sales area and a dining area, and the second floor is a museum of his life. Raymond made German sausages that conquered the country of Japanese samurai, and the Japanese called him the "missionary of the stomach." He had the only love of his life in Hakodate and met a Japanese girl. At that time, Japan did not allow marriage with foreigners. Under the pressure of public opposition, Raymond still took his beloved girl back to his hometown in Germany and married and settled down. But a few years later, Raymond missed Japan again. When he came back again, the two opened a shop and factory in front of Hakodate Station. In 1974, the President of West Germany praised him for his many years of efforts for Japan-Germany friendship and awarded him the "Cross of the Order of Merit." In 1979, he won the Excellence Award of the first "Regional Culture Award" established by Suntory Cultural Foundation. In November 1985, Raymond decided to live permanently in Motomachi, Hakodate, and received two great gifts: the "Hokkaido Shimbun Industrial Economic Award" and the "Industrial Contribution Award" awarded by the Governor of Hokkaido. In May 1986, he was awarded the "Order of the Rising Sun, Fifth Class" for his long-term contribution to Japan's animal husbandry. The love and gratitude of the locals for Raymond can be seen everywhere, and even the streetcars are painted with Raymond's logo and name. His signature food is "Raymond Hot Dog", which costs 378 yen apiece, but you can add an extra cup of hot drink for only 500 yen during afternoon tea time (11:00~14:00). It's very delicious, and it's on the same level as some of the high-scoring grilled sausages we had in Germany, juicy and chewy, fragrant, and smoked just right. But the bread is better than the German one, with a crispy crust but very soft inside, which is more in line with the taste of Asians.
