Side Ancient City

Side Ancient City is located on the Mediterranean coast of Antalya Province in southern Türkiye, with its ruins concentrated on a small peninsula extending into the sea. The ancient city was founded in the 7th century BC by Greek immigrants who crossed the sea, and "Side" means "pomegranate" in the local ancient language. Relying on its natural harbor, it became an important trading port in the Pamphylia region, successively experiencing the rule of the Lydians, Persians, Alexander the Great, and the Romans. During the Roman Empire, it was bustling with merchant ships and thriving commerce, and was once a hub for the Mediterranean slave trade. Legend has it that the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra and the Roman general Antony met here. Later, under the successive blows of Arab invasions, earthquakes, and fires, the ancient city gradually declined and was abandoned around the 10th century AD. Today, strolling around the peninsula, Roman-era ruins are visible almost everywhere: the large ancient theater built according to the terrain can accommodate tens of thousands of spectators; the Roman Great Baths have been converted into a site museum, displaying statues and sarcophagi unearthed from the ancient city; walking from the main city gate along the colonnaded street toward the sea, remnants of the grand market, fountain structures, and more follow the path, outlining the contours of the commercial district of that time. On the headland at the tip of the peninsula, the Apollon Temple and the Athena Temple stand side by side. Among them, the five re-erected giant marble columns face the sea. At sunset, the columns and the sea surface are dyed golden by the setting sun, which is an iconic photo spot of the ancient city.Manavgat · 47.3 km from Akseki

Kaş

Kaş is nestled along the Lycian coast of the Mediterranean in Türkiye, built upon the ruins of the ancient city of Antiphellos. It is a harbor town that blends Greek charm with remnants of Lycian civilization. Before the population exchange between Greece and Türkiye in 1923, a large number of Greek residents lived here, and the old town still retains the blue-and-white stone houses and cobblestone alleys they left behind. The town is a renowned diving destination in Türkiye, with shipwreck sites and aircraft wreckage scattered along the coast—including a well-preserved Dakota DC-3 transport plane wreck that you can enter and explore, as well as underwater canyons, reefs, and steep rock walls. The underwater visibility is excellent, and while diving, you may occasionally spot groupers, octopuses, and sea turtles. Beyond diving, taking a boat trip is a signature experience here; you can gaze at the semi-submerged ruins of the Sunken City of Kekova along the coastline, or take a short ferry ride for a day trip to the Greek island of Kastellorizo, which is just across the water. Several Lycian rock tombs and sarcophagi are scattered throughout the town and on the hillsides, with a 4th-century BC lion-shaped sarcophagus being particularly striking. The town also preserves an ancient open-air theater, where you can sit on the stone steps and look out over the azure sea. The old town is compact, making it easy to explore the main attractions on foot. The streets are lined with shops selling handicrafts and Mediterranean snacks, perfect for slowing down and soaking in the atmosphere.Türkiye · Kas

Kaleici Old Town

4.9/5
118 reviews
Kaleici Old Town is located in the city center of Antalya and has a history of over 2,000 years. It has been ruled by various civilizations, including Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, the Byzantine Empire, the Seljuk Empire, and the Ottoman Empire, with its street layout and architectural style bearing the marks of these different civilizations. Hadrian's Gate is the iconic entrance to Kaleici Old Town, built to commemorate the visit of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. The three marble arches are flanked by towers, and the cobblestone pavement beneath the gate still clearly shows the ruts and hoof prints from ancient times. After passing through the gate, Ottoman-style stone houses with red roofs and white walls are scattered along the slopes, and narrow alleys wind upwards, with mosque domes and minarets visible from time to time. The Tekeli Mehmet Pasha Mosque in the district, built in the 17th century, features typical Ottoman architectural style; the clock tower with a pentagonal base stands on the ancient city walls, with its foundation dating back to the Byzantine period and the upper clock tower added later, making it one of the striking landmarks of Kaleici Old Town today. The Old Roman Harbor is located at the southern end of the district and was once an important maritime transport hub in the Eastern Mediterranean. Today, it is docked with yachts and fishing boats, and the azure harbor water and layers of red roofs form a classic scene of Antalya. The alleys in the northern part of the old town are perfect for a quiet stroll, where you can see old houses covered in vines and scattered craft shops along the way. Restaurants and cafes are densely distributed along the main street, where you can taste local flavors such as Mediterranean grilled fish, or browse shops for handicrafts like carpets and ceramics.Antalya · 98.3 km from Akseki

Theater structure The theater has a diameter of 96 meters and has a stone-step auditorium that can accommodate 7,000 people. Exquisite carvings decorate the walls of the theater stage with columns in ancient Greek style, with exquisite details and exquisite carvings. According to research, the top of the stage was once covered with a roof, but unfortunately it has been damaged. Exquisite acoustic design This ancient theater has a unique acoustic design, which can clearly transmit the sound effects on the stage to the auditorium without the aid of audio equipment. It is said that even a silver coin could be heard in the auditorium back then. To, such a skill can not help but admire the wisdom of the ancient Romans. Summer Music Festival Due to this extraordinary sound design, the Aspendos Theatre is still in use today, where the Antalya Opera and Arts Festival is held every summer, with audiences sitting on stone steps from 2,000 years ago Enjoy the sound effects. Hierapolis

Hierapolis, located above Pamukkale, was founded in 190 BC. In ancient times, the hot springs and the limestone at the foot of the mountain were believed to possess magical properties. The site is quite large, with ancient cemeteries, bathhouses, a market, arches, an amphitheater, the remains of the Temple of Apollo, the Hierapolis Archaeological Museum, and the ancient hot springs scattered from north to south. Entering from the north gate ticket office, one first passes through an ancient necropolis with over 1,000 tombs. Continuing forward, one arrives at the North Bathhouse, featuring several interconnected stone arches, a classic example of Roman architecture. Next to the bathhouses are three continuous arches and a cylindrical stone mound. From here, heading south, a north-south avenue runs through the site. Today, this avenue is mostly broken and fenced off. The Hierapolis Archaeological Museum is located at the southern end of the avenue, at a junction where the road leading up from the travertines at the foot of the mountain leads to this point. Formerly the Southern Baths, it displays a large collection of statues and sarcophagi excavated from the site, including Classical and Roman sculptures, ancient coins, and gold and silver jewelry. Turn left at this intersection to reach the Pamukkale Ancient Thermal Pool. Roman ruins lie at the bottom of the pool, where clear, hot spring water gushes forth continuously, allowing for clear views of marble columns and fragments of statues reclining at the bottom. The well-preserved amphitheater near the ancient thermal pool is a must-see. Built in the 2nd century BC, it is said to have accommodated up to 15,000 spectators. Statues of Greek gods can be found at the main entrance, and the ruins of the Temple of Apollo can be seen in the distance in front of the amphitheater. Hierapolis-Pamukkale is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sunset is particularly beautiful, with the golden rays of the setting sun filtering through the arches onto the ancient stone, creating an unforgettable, time-worn beauty.Türkiye · Pamukkale

Turkey's Dead Sea is located in Oludeniz, south of Fethiye. Although the place name is chilling, it has a soft sandy beach that is enough to enjoy the style of the Mediterranean coast. Changing rooms, shower rooms, and open-air bars are also available. Typical of Turkish European beaches. A big turn of the Mediterranean Sea on Turkey's long and tortuous southwestern coastline has created the huge Turkish Dead Sea. The entire coast is surrounded by mountains, forming a calm and waveless lagoon. Because the water here is calm and the reflection in the water is almost still, it is named "Dead Sea". This is a natural beach in southwestern Turkey, you can swim, but the beach is pebbled, so it is recommended to wear beach shoes. In addition, paragliding is also a popular sport here. When you fly into the air, you will experience peace and tranquility. The feeling of integration with the blue sky, blue sea, green mountains and white sand is very wonderful.Türkiye · Fethiye

Oludeniz Beach is located in Fethiye on the southwest coast of Türkiye. The name "Dead Sea" is translated from the Turkish "Ölüdeniz," referring to the bay's year-round calm waters—even when the open sea is rough, the water enclosed by the sandbar remains as calm as a mirror, and it has no relation to the high-salinity Dead Sea in the Middle East. A curved sandbar separates the open sea from the Blue Lagoon on the inside: the outer beach faces the open sea, while the inner lagoon is shallow and clear, transitioning from turquoise to sapphire blue, with pine-covered hillsides all around, creating a picture-perfect scene of blue, white, and green.Türkiye · Fethiye

It was a fantastic experience. The customer service was incredibly reliable, promptly answering and resolving any questions. The local supplier we arranged was also incredibly reliable. The pilot, with over 20 years of flying experience and a keen sharer, created an unforgettable experience. A highly recommended and reliable choice!

Aspendos Theater near Antalya is impressive. One of the largest Roman ampitheaters in the world. Easist way to get here is to just arrange a taxi to take you there and back and wait a couple of hours. I imagine it would be super busy in summer, but in winter it was near deserted. We had the place to ourselves.

The ruins of Hierapolis are located near Pamukkale. They are in the same large scenic area as the Pamukkale hot springs. You can walk between the two. It is a famous holy city in ancient Greece. It was built roughly in the 2nd century BC. At present, the ruins still have ancient Greek theaters, churches, baths and other large ruins, which reproduce the daily life scenes of the ancient Greek people. It is now a world cultural heritage. The ruins of Hierapolis were built by Eumenes II, the king of Pergamon, an ancient Greek city-state near the west coast of Turkey. It was built as a hot spring resort for the royal family and nobles. It was razed to the ground in a major earthquake in the 17th century. Now only broken walls and ruins remain.

Turkey's Dead Sea is located in Oludeniz, south of Fethiye. The Dead Sea in Fethiye is different from the Dead Sea in Israel. It is not the Dead Sea where no life can survive in the water due to high salt content. Instead, in Oludeniz, surrounded by mountains, the long and winding coastline divides the Mediterranean Bay into two. The Mediterranean Sea on the outside is turbulent, but the bay on the inside is calm and quiet, as if frozen, so it is called the Dead Sea.

This is a very beautiful bay, the sea water is blue, like a striking piece of turquoise. The Turks like the color blue very much, and their souvenirs are blue eyes, which are said to ward off evil spirits. Most of the beaches here are for locals to vacation. This beach is said to be a popular beach on the Internet.
