Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by Mr. Tan Kah Kee, a renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader, marking the first university established by overseas Chinese in modern Chinese educational history. For a century, the university has upheld its founder's vision, cultivating a distinguished ethos of "patriotism, revolution, self-improvement, and science." With its distinctive educational approach, it has nurtured generations of outstanding talents, making significant contributions to national prosperity, public welfare, and the global dissemination of Chinese culture. The Siming campus is the main campus of Xiamen University, located in Siming District, Xiamen, at the southern tip of Xiamen Island. Nestled between mountains and sea, it is renowned as the "garden university by the sea." The campus features numerous landmark buildings and comprehensive teaching and living facilities, with the Jiageng Building Complex (also known as the Songen Building Complex) standing as its iconic cross-century architectural masterpiece. Completed in 2001 to commemorate the university's 80th anniversary, this complex consists of five buildings: Songen Tower (the main building), Baoxin Liying Building, Chengfeng Building, Zuying Building, and Zhongmingxuan Building. Designed with a symmetrical "one-main-four-auxiliary" layout, the 21-story Songen Tower serves primarily as the administrative center, while the other four six-story buildings are dedicated to public teaching and research. The architectural style inherits and evolves the distinctive "Jiageng Style," featuring red-tiled sloping roofs that harmonize with the campus's historic structures. This fusion of Chinese and Western elements creates a modern complex with contemporary character, forming the landmark core that dominates the campus landscape.China · Xiamen

Dongshan island is located in the south of Zhangzhou, Fujian. It is a trendy island with beautiful scenery and simple folk customs. The scene in the movie "The Left Ear" where the little girl cries by the sea was filmed at Nanmen bay on the island. Due to the popularity of the movie, Nanmen bay has become one of the top attractions for tourism on Dongshan island. In addition, other attractions here each have their own unique features. The iconic wind-eroded rock is a must-visit photo spot on Dongshan Island. It is said that this rock sways with just a breeze, appearing as if it might fall at any moment, which is truly fascinating. Not far from the wind-eroded rock lies the widows' village, which is actually a museum. When the army retreated from Dongshan Island, they took away the young men, leaving the women in the village as "widows." The museum showcases the entire event, with historical photos and reliefs that vividly recreate the history of that time. When visiting Dongshan Island, you can stay for a day or two to savor fresh local seafood, experience the joy of fishing firsthand, then bask in the sun on the fine sandy beaches. Enjoy playing in the water and riding the waves with the sea breeze, making the most of your coastal getaway.China · Dongshan County

Nanputuo Temple

Nanputuo Temple is adjacent to Xiamen University and backed by Wulao Peak. As a millennium-old monastery with thriving incense in southern Fujian, many travelers arrange to visit both sites on the same day. The temple was first built in the late Tang Dynasty, underwent several rises and declines, and was rebuilt by Marquis Jinghai Shi Lang during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty. It enshrines Guanyin Bodhisattva and is located south of Mount Putuo in Zhejiang, hence the name "Nanputuo Temple." On one side of the temple stands the Southern Fujian Buddhist College, founded in 1925, which is one of China's modern Buddhist institutions with a long educational history. The temple's east and west mountain gates stand close to each other. Entering through them, visitors first encounter the liberation pond and lotus pond, where turtles bask on rocks and stone pagodas stand by the water. The main halls ascend along the central axis with the mountain's slope, arranged in sequence as the heavenly king hall, main hall of the great hero, great compassion hall, and scripture repository: the heavenly king hall enshrines a perpetually smiling Maitreya at its center, with Skanda standing behind holding his vajra staff; the main hall of the great hero houses the buddhas of the three periods, while the three western saints stand behind it; the great compassion hall, built on a high stone platform, is an octagonal wooden pavilion with triple flying eaves, containing four guanyin statues facing cardinal directions—three being 48-armed guanyin exquisitely crafted; the scripture repository safeguards Buddhist artifacts including the blood-written Lotus Sutra from the Wanli era and a white porcelain guanyin by renowned Ming dynasty ceramic artist He Chaozong. Bell and drum towers flank the courtyard, while the arhat hall displays eighteen arhats arranged on either side. The temple grounds preserve numerous cliff inscriptions by notable figures, with the massive carved "Buddha" character by monk Zhenhui from the Qing dynasty on the rear cliff being particularly striking—often drawing travelers to pause for photos. For mountain hiking, ascend the stone steps behind the temple to Wulao Peak, where "Five elders piercing the clouds" ranks among Xiamen's eight great views as designated in the Qing dynasty, offering summit vistas over Xiamen University and seascapes. Alternatively, touring the temple's main halls requires little time if skipping the climb. For vegetarian meals, you can visit the temple's vegetarian restaurant. Haihui Lou and Puzhao Lou are both garden-style dining buildings. Nanputuo vegetarian cuisine is highly renowned in Xiamen. One signature dish, "Half-moon sinking in the river," features mushrooms and gluten in a soup with a "half-moon" submerged in the broth. It earned this elegant name in the 1960s after being tasted by Guo Moruo. Before leaving, consider taking some Nanputuo vegetarian cakes, available in both sweet and savory flavors. Fillings like mung bean, coconut, and pumpkin are particularly popular, making them famous souvenirs from Xiamen.China · Xiamen

Chaozhou Han Wen Gong Temple was built to commemorate Han Yu, a writer and thinker in the Tang Dynasty. Founded in the second year of Song Xianping (AD 999), it is the oldest Korean temple in my country. Han Wen Gong Temple is surrounded by mountains and rivers. The temple records the history of the Han Temple, the achievements of Han Yu in curing tides, and the poems that praise the Han Temple. Climbing up to the Shilang Pavilion, you can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of Chaozhou. Han Yu served as the prefect of Chaozhou for less than eight months. During this period, he exorcised evil, supported farmers, redeemed slaves, established education, made outstanding contributions to the development of Chaozhou, and won the respect and memory of Chaozhou people.China · Chaozhou
Queshi Scenic Spot

Queshi Scenic Spot

7.3
4.5/5
677 reviews
Queshi scenic area is located in Haojiang District on the south bank of the inner bay of Shantou, facing the old city across the sea. The character "Que" originally means "stone mountain". The mountain is covered with granite, which has been weathered over a long period of time, forming a continuous range of stone egg-shaped hills. Strange peaks, secluded valleys, and bizarre rocks are framed together with the bay scenery, and mountains, sea, rocks, and caves make up a beautiful landscape. The attraction consists of six sections: Xiaoshi, Tashan, Yanfeng, Xianglushan, Bijiashan, and Su'an. Among them, Tashan and Yanfeng are more developed and are the main destinations for most tourists. The attraction is divided into six attractions, namely Xiaoshi attraction, Queshi Tashan attraction, Yanfeng attraction, Xianglu Mountain, Bijia Mountain attraction, and Su'an attraction. Among them, Xianglu attraction and Bijia Mountain attraction are currently under development. You can choose to visit the remaining four attractions based on your preference, with Queshi Tashan attraction and Yanfeng attraction being the main highlights. This is because Queshi Tashan attraction is relatively more developed, while Yanfeng attraction is another well-developed attraction, which is comparatively larger—about three times the size of Queshi Tashan attraction—and notably features the natural scenery of Dream Valley. Tashan mountain is renowned for its secluded rock caves and cliff inscriptions, with attractions like Shuilian cave, Taohua stream, and Liudan pavilion scattered across its slopes. Its highlight is Chuihong cave—a series of interconnected caverns naturally formed by stacked granite boulders, where large and small rocks cluster chaotically along the ceilings and walls like a stone corridor. Visitors crawl through the cave and emerge halfway up the mountain; further up lies Piaoran pavilion at Tashan's summit. This two-story, six-pillared pavilion offers panoramic views of Shantou's inner bay and the city skyline opposite, making it perpetually popular. The quieter Mengou pavilion lies not far along the hiking trail. Visitors can choose the cable car or slide for ascent/descent, or hike the entire route. The least strenuous option is taking the cable car up and descending through Chuihong cave's rocky passage. The Flame peak area is much more open than Ta mountain, with its signature attraction being Dream valley: in the 1920s, writer Xiao Qian fell in love with a Chaoshan girl in Queshi and later wrote the novel "Dream valley" based on this experience. The valley features lush trees and serene streams, offering a different kind of rustic charm beyond rock and sea views. The attraction also preserves Western-style old buildings from the port-opening era, such as the former British consulate and Queshi church. After admiring the mountains and sea, these colonial-era structures present another unique aspect that distinguishes Queshi from ordinary mountain-sea attractions. To the left, a 5-minute walk leads to Chuihong Cave. This naturally formed granite cave complex features stacked boulders of varying sizes along its ceiling and walls, creating a stone corridor. Climbing through the cave is akin to ascending a mountain, as the exit actually nears the summit. Not far from Chui Hong Cave is the mountaintop viewing platform Piao Ran Pavilion, where you can overlook the panoramic view of Shantou, but this spot tends to be crowded. The Meng Ou Pavilion on the western side is quieter, and the distance between the two can be covered in approx. 10 mins on foot. After visiting, you can choose to take the slideway down the mountain.China · Shantou

Xunliao Bay is located on the western end of Renping Peninsula in Huidong, Huizhou, by the Daya Bay. Known for its clear seawater and fine white sand, it is often referred to as the "heaven-sent white gold beach." As a popular coastal resort near the Pearl River Delta, it often attracts self-drive visitors from Guangzhou and Shenzhen on weekends. A coastline stretching over 20 km connects a series of bays, featuring public beaches like Xunliao Bay and Deze Garden, as well as private beaches affiliated with hotels, all with fine, soft sand and gentle slopes, perfect for wading and sand play. The sea is dotted with small islands, among which Delta Island is accessible by speedboat, offering snorkeling and sailing boat activities. Onshore, Mozishi Park is renowned for its "shallow sea stone forest," with giant rocks like Mushroom Rock and Sea Lion Rock scattered along the coast. The iconic "wind-eroded rocking stone," which sways but never falls, is a signature sight and a popular spot for sunset views. In the Tianhou Palace Lingnan Folk Culture Street, the white-walled arcade buildings of Lingnan architecture complement the Mazu culture, making it ideal for a leisurely stroll. The resort area also preserves a natural mangrove forest. The experience goes beyond beach strolls, shell collecting, and sunbathing. Joining local fishermen for trawling is a highly representative activity, where you keep the catch and can have it cooked at nearby stalls. Enjoy the fresh sweetness of the day's seafood with dishes like salt and pepper mantis shrimp, ginger and scallion stir-fried flower crabs, and steamed fish. To avoid crowds, head to the bays near Nanhai fishing village, where locals frequent quieter shores. About stay There are many hotels in Xunliao Bay. The advantage is that most hotels offer a direct sea view, have good locations, and relatively mature service facilities. Bay avenue has hotels and guesthouses of various grades. If you want to save a little, you can also consider staying in a homestay on Xunping road. Although you can't see the sea view, you can enjoy the farmland and green mountains, which are also pleasing to the eye. Moreover, it's not far to walk to the bay. About meals There are many seafood stalls here with very fresh offerings, such as salt and pepper mantis shrimp, ginger and scallion stir-fried flower crabs, and steamed fish. You can indulge to your heart's content. If you need to buy seafood, there is a hard-to-find market in Xunliao town. You can ask the locals for directions. Fishermen usually return in the afternoon and sell their fresh catch by the market.China · Huidong

Jimeixue Village is located in the Jimei Tourism Area, north of Xiamen Special Economic Zone. Showcasing the typical style of ethnic Fujianese people's ancestral hometowns, the buildings all combine Chinese and western architectural style. Among these are the very beautiful Longzhou Pond and the nearby Jimei Middle School. The academic atmosphere on the campus is sure to remind visitors of schooldays past. Also worth seeing is Kah Kee Park—the place where Mr. Tan Kah Kee is buried. In addition to his gravesite, there are also 15 bas relief carvings engraved with the story of his life.China · Xiamen

As expected of Songcheng, it's really good. First of all, the environment is nice, and the prices are incredibly low. For example, a cup of green tea is only 6 yuan, and you can even get refills! The most interesting thing is the courtesan's dance! It's truly excellent!

We didn't catch any squid, but the owner helped us by casting a net every half hour, bringing up quite a few. We had a barbecue on the boat, which was a nice way to relax and have some fun in the evening. Even though we didn't catch any fish, we still had a barbecue and seafood porridge dinner.

Walking around Furong Lake after entering the school gate is a pleasant experience. The red brick and green tile buildings in the Jiarong style are pleasing to the eye, and the large trees along the road provide shade, keeping you cool and dry. I didn't feel tired even after strolling around for half a day. The overall atmosphere is quiet and perfect for leisurely exploration.

There weren't many people at Nanputuo Temple on the weekend, and the free incense at the entrance was a thoughtful touch. The temple buildings were simple and clean, and climbing the steps offered views of Xiamen University and the sea. The path was shaded by trees, providing coolness from the sun. I bought some vegetarian pastries, which were light and not greasy. Overall, it was a relaxing and comfortable experience.

After visiting the Thai Buddhist Hall at Kaiyuan Temple, a taxi ride cost just over three yuan took me directly to Han Yu's Ancestral Hall. Walking there would have been 1.8km, which would have been quite tiring. Taxis are relatively cheap in Chaozhou. This place mainly introduces the life of Han Yu from the Tang Dynasty, his contributions during his exile to Chaozhou, and praises his patriotism and dedication to the people. It's worth taking a short stroll, as the reservation ticket is free, essentially like visiting a small park. The ticket entrance for Guangji Bridge is just over 100 meters away. After visiting Guangji Bridge, you can go directly there to experience the culture and charm of a pontoon bridge before returning to the ancient city, avoiding backtracking.

Huizhou boasts two of the most beautiful coastal spots: Shuangyue Bay and Xunliao Bay. These two coastlines are also among the most beautiful beaches in Guangdong. While Shuangyue Bay might have a slight edge in terms of scenery alone, Xunliao Bay excels in its larger scale, more comprehensive facilities, and greater livability. It's also closer to Shenzhen, and the newly expanded highway makes travel much smoother. If you're simply visiting for tourism, you'll definitely want to explore both. If you're short on time and have to choose one, go to Shuangyue Bay. But if you're looking for a weekend getaway, to relax, enjoy seafood, feel the sea breeze, and not rush through tourist attractions, then choose Xunliao Bay. Many people choose Xunliao Bay for their winter getaways.

I spent most of the day at Jimei University Village, strolling around the Dragon Boat Pool. The red brick and white stone architecture of the Jimei School was very charming. The village wasn't as noisy as a tourist attraction; there were small shops along the roadside where you could sit and have a drink. The overall pace was slow and relaxing, much more comfortable than shopping in a mall.
