The windmills of Astypalea constitute a significant and impressive landmark of the island. They are located in the square of Chora (the main village of the island) and are part of the traditional architecture of the area.
The eight windmills are constructed from stone and wood and are imposing in size. They were built for milling wheat and other crops, harnessing the strong winds prevalent on the island. The windmills are an integral part of local history and are often depicted in photographs and artistic works showcasing Astypalea.
Today, the windmills are a tourist attraction, drawing visitors who wish to see these remarkable structures up close and enjoy the incredible views towards the Aegean Sea and the picturesque landscape of Chora.
