Fang Tower Park stands 80 meters away from the north of the busy Fangta Street, Changsu. It is an antique garden built based on the historical site of Chongjiao Xingfu Temple dated back in the Song Dynasty, sharing resemblance with the Suzhou Garden in style. Though the ancient temple was destroyed, the Fang Tower built in the 4th year of Jian Yan period of the Southern Song Dynasty (A.D. 1130) remains. Fang Tower has been renovated for several times. It is a landmark of Changshu. Fang Tower Park is named after Fang Tower. The scenery in the park is appealing, and observing fishes in Zuiwei Pool in the west of the park is also one of the favorites of visitors.Changshu · 967m from downtown

The Suzhou Museum is located on the west side of the Humble Administrator's Garden in Pingjiang District, an ancient city in Suzhou. It includes the new building that opened in 2006 and the ancient building of Palace of King Zhong of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (the old building). The entire museum is like a small garden. In the new museum, you can see artifacts such as pottery, jade, paintings and calligraphy from ancient times to modern times. In Palace of King Zhong, you can also see the beauty and elegance of the “Su-style painting”.Suzhou · 38.6 km from Changshu

Fengqiao Scenic Area is located by the canal west of the ancient city of Suzhou, known forFengqiao, Tieling Pass, Fengqiao ancient town,Ancient canal(A section of the Grand Canal) serves as the main attraction. Zhang Ji's Tang dynasty poem "Mooring by maple bridge at night" has drawn countless visitors through the ages to reflect on history and experience the ethereal atmosphere of hearing Hanshan Temple's bells beneath Fengqiao bridge. The Fengqiao Scenic Area's ancillary attractions occupy most of its elongated, north-south oriented Jiangfeng islet, which connects to land via bridges. Hanshan Temple stands to the east, separated by a narrow waterway. The Iron Bell Pass and Hanshan Temple are on the same bank, together with the Maple Bridge adjacent to the Iron Bell Pass, located at the northwest corner outside Hanshan Temple. The attraction has three entrances: the Heshan entrance in the south near Heshan Road and Jinmen Road, the Jiangcun Bridge entrance near the main gate of Hanshan Temple in the middle, and the Iron Bell Pass entrance in the north which leads directly to the main attraction, the Iron Bell Pass and Maple Bridge. The southern part of Jiangfeng Islet is a green belt with sparsely arranged gardens and halls, while the northern part features the newly built ancient-style Maple Bridge Old Town. There was indeed an old town here historically, thriving during the Ming and Qing dynasties as a hub where the canal and ancient post road converged, attracting numerous merchants before being destroyed in war. You can visit several exhibition halls in the town, including the Water Transport Exhibition Hall to see ship models,Jiangfeng AcademyViewing the art exhibition, the miniature model "Scenic spots of Fengqiao" in Fengqiao Garden recreates the scene from the Ming and Qing dynastiesFengqiaoThe bustling scene of the area. Several bridges are also worth noting. Jiangcun bridge near the gate of Hanshan Temple is an ancient bridge rebuilt during the Qing dynasty. It's said that the "jiang feng" in "jiang feng yu huo dui chou mian" refers both to maple trees by the river and to Jiangcun bridge and Maple bridge. The wooden covered bridge, Tingzhong bridge, offers a great angle for photographing Maple bridge and Tieling Pass. Under the archway Jinghong crossing at the northern end of Jiangfeng islet, you can see the busy traffic of boats on the ancient canal, with a cargo ship dock just across the river. A short walk east from Tingzhong bridge brings you to Maple bridge, where several steps by the waterway are said to be the mooring spot of Zhang Ji. The original construction date of Maple bridge is unknown; what we see today was rebuilt in the 6th year of Tongzhi reign (1867 AD). Walking across this single-arch stone bridge, you'll notice the steps extending into the gateway of Tieling Pass, worn smooth by time with uneven edges, vividly conveying the passage of years through the marks left by countless visitors. Tieling Pass was first built in the 36th year of Jiajing reign (1557 AD) of the Ming dynasty, serving as Suzhou's only remaining anti-pirate tower. Its stone base remains original from the Ming-Qing period, with ivy covering the weathered surface like a chronicle of time. The upper pavilion is a modern reconstruction. Visitors can ascend the narrow staircase to overlook Fengqiao ancient town and gaze at Puming pagoda of Hanshan Temple. From the dock below Tieling Pass, you can take a cruise that leisurely passes under bridges, recreating the poetic "arriving guest boat" experience. Additionally, the cruise features Pingtan performances, where soft Suzhou dialect blends with oar sounds and water reflections—a living footnote to the verse "the midnight bell reaches the visitor's boat."Suzhou · 42.1 km from Changshu

Shantang Ancient Street is an ancient commercial street along the Shantang River in Northwest Suzhou. It boasts 1000 years of history and was built by the Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi when he was a government official in Suzhou. Today, at the southern end of the street, there is a temple built to commemorate him. Ancient bridges span across the river canals, and both sides of the canals are lined with old houses and traditional shops. In the evening, the red lanterns lining the street are reflected in the river, creating a picturesque scenery. You can take a boat ride for a fee, or find a tea house to drink tea and listen to traditional Suzhou Pingtan.Suzhou · 39.6 km from Changshu

Jinji Lake

7.2
4.6/5
2.8k reviews
Jinji Lake is located in Suzhou Industrial Park, showcasing a modern skyline of high-rise buildings that contrasts with the ancient charm of Suzhou's old town. Slightly larger than Hangzhou's West Lake, it attracts many travelers daily for lakeside leisure walks, shopping, and dining, as well as couples taking wedding photos. The attraction has four entrances to this open park, accessible from any side. Most travelers enter through the west entrance, near a subway station offering views of Suzhou's new landmark, the Gate of the Orient skyscraper, colloquially known as "Big Pants." Bike rentals are available near the subway exit for those wanting to ride around the lake. The west entrance leads to Lakeside New Heaven and Earth, the starting point of Lakeside Avenue, featuring a pleasant wooden waterfront promenade and lifelike bronze statues. On sunny days, many jog or ride bikes here, while the lakeside grass is perfect for picnics, barbecues, or kite-flying. You can also see the "Harmony" sculpture by the lake. With enough time, consider taking a boat from Wanghu Pavilion Pier to Peach Blossom Island at the lake's center, especially stunning during the blooming season. After exploring the west entrance, walk or take a water bus to Ligongdi Pier. Ligongdi, the only causeway on Jinji Lake, preserves traditional Suzhou architecture and hosts an international waterfront shopping street blending global brands and local shops. Alternatively, ride the free (holiday surcharges may apply) sightseeing train to attractions like the Fund Museum, extreme sports area, Mid-Lake Pavilion, Lingyun Bridge, and Li Chaoqiong Poetry Monument. Couples or families can take a water bus directly from Wanghu Pavilion Pier to Moon Harbor or enter via the north entrance, where the modern leisure plaza features the Suzhou Culture and Arts Center (dubbed "Suzhou Bird's Nest"), linking the Red Maple Forest view and Suzhou International Expo Center, housing theaters, cinemas, and performance halls. Capture photos or watch a 3D movie here. Thrill-seekers can ride the Ferris wheel for panoramic lake views. Jinji Lake's nightscape is equally captivating. Take an evening cruise (about 40-minute duration) from Moon Harbor or Wanghu Pavilion Pier, passing daytime attractions. The lake's illuminated bridges are a highlight, with digital waterfalls displaying colorful patterns and text. Don't miss Harmony Sky Screen, spanning 500 meters long, 32 meters wide, and 21 meters high—outstripping Las Vegas' canopy—where giant lotus leaves and colorful fish animations dazzle overhead nightly.Suzhou · 38.3 km from Changshu

The Bund

157.1k reviews
The Bund is located along the Huangpu River, stretching approx. 1.5 km in length. As a symbolic attraction of Shanghai, it features a diverse collection of international architectural styles and the stunning night view of the Huangpu River as its highlights. The Bund stands with dozens of classical revival buildings in diverse styles, including the renowned Bank of China building, Shanghai Peace Hotel, Customs House, and HSBC building, recreating the former glory of the "Wall Street of the Far East." Surprisingly, these structures were neither designed by the same architect nor built in the same period, yet they possess a unique harmonious beauty. The Bund showcases various architectural styles, such as French classical, French chateau, and Gothic, which are significant historical sites and representative buildings of modern China, forming a stunning scenic line along the Huangpu River. As night falls, the neon lights on both banks illuminate the sky. Board a Huangpu River cruise or ferry and glide along the river, feeling the gentle breeze. On one side is The Bund, a witness to historical development, while on the other stands Lujiazui, Shanghai's modern landmark. The graceful silhouette of Waibaidu Bridge offers a fresh perspective to admire the beauty of this vibrant metropolis.Shanghai · 84.4 km from Changshu

Dangkou Ancient Town is a classic "Jiangnan" water town. Jiangnan or "south of the river" refers to the geographic area to the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The white walls and black tiles of the buildings that line the waterways and footpaths stand proudly like strong trees in a forest. Strings of red lanterns hang beneath the eaves of the buildings. Because the scenic area is relatively new, it has not yet been fully refurbished and still has a mix of old and modern architecture. However, photos taken here still look beautiful. Many visitors from nearby Shanghai and Suzhou come to check it out.Wuxi · 23.7 km from Changshu

West Lake

4.7/5
37.4k reviews
West Lake is undoubtedly the epitome of Hangzhou's beauty. The famous "Ten scenes of West Lake" surround its shores, where nature and culture complement each other, forming the core area of Hangzhou tourism. You don't need to visit every attraction - instead, spend half a day or a full day strolling along the lake. However you choose to enjoy it, the experience will surely lift your spirits. West Lake is the core attraction of Hangzhou, surrounded by clouds and mountains on three sides and the city on one side. The Su Causeway and Bai Causeway stretch across the lake, dividing it into several water areas. The lakeside scenery is highlighted by the "Ten Scenes of West Lake" from the Southern Song Dynasty, along with the later "New Ten Scenes" and "Three Additional Scenes," featuring over a hundred attractions along the shore and mountains. Pavilions, temples, pagodas, gardens, causeways, and islands complement the distant mountains and nearby waters, while legends like the Broken Bridge where Lady White Snake met Xu Xian add a layer of storytelling to the landscape. West Lake extends east from Songmuchang in Hangzhou and the north of Baolu Road turning to Shaoniangong Square, passing Baisha Road, Huancheng West Road, Hubin Road, and Nanshan Road to the south of Wansong Ridge, covering all attractions including Wu Mountain, Ziyang Mountain, and Yunju Mountain. To the south, it stretches from Gulou along the eastern foothills of Wu Mountain, Ziyang Mountain, and Yunju Mountain, passing Fengshanmen and Fenghuangshan Road, then following the West Lake water diversion channel to the north bank of the Qiantang River, turning to the Coral Sand Reservoir and ending north of Liufangling. To the west, it runs from Liufangling, Zhugan Mountain, Jiuqu Ridge, and Mingren Ridge to Meiren Peak, Beigaofeng, Lingfeng Mountain, and east of the ridge line of Laohe Mountain. To the north, it follows the foothills of Laohe Mountain (west wall of Zhejiang University), turns 30 m north of Qingzhiwu Road, connects to Yugu Road, Zhejiang University Road, and Shuguang Road, ending south of Songmuchang. West Lake has over 100 attractions, renowned for its "Ten scenes of West Lake", "New ten scenes of West Lake" and "Three reviews · Ten scenes of West Lake". West Lake overview You can explore West Lake on foot, by cruise, on electric bikes, via self-drive, or by riding. Among these, electric bikes are the most convenient and effortless option, with hop-on-hop-off sightseeing vehicles circling the entire lake. Riding along the lakeshore is romantic and leisurely, with many public bike rental spots available. For a boat tour, there are nearly 10 docks around the lake offering various vessels and routes. We highly recommend taking a cruise to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon at the lake center while enjoying the scenic views. Alternatively, you can hail a hand-rowed boat for a more flexible experience with a boatman guiding your tour. North line scenery The north shore of West Lake gathers quite a few attractions, usually starting from the remnant snow on broken bridge at the northeast corner and heading west all the way to Yuewang Temple. You can walk along Bai Causeway to Solitary Hill, visiting cultural attractions like Xiling Seal Engravers' Society, Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Chinese Seal Art Museum, and Zhongshan Park's Crane Pavilion. Enjoy authentic West Lake vinegar fish at Louwailou Restaurant, then cross Xiling Bridge to leave the island - Yuewang Temple and Breeze-ruffled lotus at Quyuan Garden are just a short distance away. If it's a summer day with strong sunlight, it is recommended to stroll along Beishan road, hiding under the dense shade of trees to admire the curve of Broken bridge and the swaying weeping willows on Bai causeway opposite. There are many entrances along the way leading to Precious stone hill, where you can hike for views, and descend to reach Yuewang temple. Yuewang square has many small shops for snacks, and the Impression West Lake show here in the evening is also worth watching. If you have ample time and energy, you can also head to Su causeway from here for a walk to enjoy the panoramic view of West Lake. Southeast coast (Lakeside-Nanshan Road) Another area with a concentration of attractions is the Hubin Road-Nanshan Road along the southeastern coast. Hubin Road is located at the junction between Hangzhou's urban area and the attraction, offering views of West Lake, a dock for West Lake cruises, and the iconic music fountain. The advantage of Hubin Road is its quick access from the attraction to the downtown business district, making it suitable for travelers with a tight itinerary to make a short stop. Head south from Hubin road and walk along Nanshan road, where you can visit attractions like Orioles singing in the willows, Long bridge, Leifeng pagoda, Evening bell at Nanping hill, and Viewing fish at flower harbor. The distance between adjacent attractions is not far, so you can walk or take a sightseeing bus or public transport, which are also convenient. You can arrange a day to visit a few of them according to your preference. Among them, Leifeng pagoda and Evening bell at Nanping hill can be visited in the evening. Listening to the bell at Jingci temple and overlooking the night view of West lake from Leifeng pagoda are both great experiences.China · Hangzhou

Yangcheng Lake spans Suzhou City and Kunshan City. It is famous for the Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs listed in the autumn. The Suzhou people mainly go to the Lotus Island on the north bank of the lake and the Weiting Town on the south bank of the lake to eat crabs. The Shanghainese go to Bacheng in Kunshan City on the east bank of the lake. In the time when the hairy crabs are not on the market, you can enjoy the lake view and pastoral scenery in Yangcheng Lake and taste other lake fresh.Suzhou · 25.6 km from Changshu

Pingjiang Road Historic District is located in the south of Humble Administrator's Garden. It has a history of more than 2,500 years and is a well-preserved ancient street. The whole block has Pingjiang Road at its center. This is a small road along the Banghe River. It is about 1.6 kilometers long in total. There are the Xuanqio Lane, the Daru Lane, the Weidao Lane, the Zhongzhangjia Lane, the Daxinqiao Lane and other alleys on the eastern and western sides. The eastern side especially has preserved many water lanes, which are parallel to the water and land and adjacent to the river street. They are very representative of the features of Jiangnan Water City. When you slacken your pace and step foot on the stone road, next to the lush camphor trees you can see the stone columns by the river and stone tables and stone benches along the road. You can take a look at the old houses here. With their white walls, gray tiles, wooden doors and windows, they are elegant and charming in their simplicity.Suzhou · 39.3 km from Changshu

In the summer, a popular delicacy in the Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai area is collectively known as "zaohuo" (糟货), originating from coastal areas like Ningbo. It's made by marinating ingredients in a high-quality "zaolu" (糟卤), and can be cooked or raw, depending on personal preference and the characteristics of the ingredients. It's essential to choose a high-quality bottled zaolu. Supermarkets also sell cheap, bagged zaolu for a couple of yuan, but the taste is inferior, mainly because it uses Shaoxing wine instead of premium Huadiao wine. Almost anything can be marinated: chicken wings, chicken feet, dried tofu, edamame knots, boiled pork, prawns, etc. Chilled in the refrigerator, it's a perfect summer treat, a true delight. Good zaolu can generally be used for marinating two or three times consecutively; after that, the flavor will become less intense.

Today's visit to the Suzhou Museum, guided by Ms. Xu Hui, was incredibly enriching. Previously, I only knew of the warm patina of the celadon ware and the exquisite craftsmanship of the pearl reliquary pagoda; I could only see the surface of the objects. Many hidden details, the historical context, and the stories behind them—without your patient explanations, I would likely have simply rushed past them, missing their true meaning. Your explanations were unhurried and concise, seamlessly blending historical facts with engaging details, allowing the coldly displayed antiquities to slowly acquire the warmth of time. Although this trip had other regrets, your thoughtful explanations allowed me to truly understand a part of the profound cultural heritage of Jiangnan. I am deeply grateful and thank you very much.

Shaoxing hides such a beautiful ancient village! ✨ This is Fengqiao Scenic Area. The Fengxi River flows gently, with white walls and black tiles nestled among the trees. Without excessive commercialization, it retains the authentic charm of Jiangnan. Walking on the old cobblestone streets, every brick and tile tells a story of a thousand years past. The Beicang River, shrouded in morning mist, was coated in a layer of silver rust. Rowboats paddled past, startling the sound of gongs from the waterside opera stage. An elderly tea drinker in a blue cloth shirt leaned against a beautiful woman's chair, while excerpts from "Pearl Tower" on the radio harmonized beautifully with the chopping of knives at the fried fish shop across the river. The most vibrant scene was around the corner from the "Hua Family Charity Hall": preserved pickles drying on a plaque soaked up the sun, while a young woman at the cultural and creative shop next door scanned a family's account book into a QR code. As the setting sun stained the ivy between the cracks of the blue bricks with golden threads, I suddenly understood what "Dangkou" meant: the entire town, like a swing swung by time, oscillated back and forth between the Ming and Qing dynasties and the present.

My second visit to West Lake was great; the boat tour was excellent. The dock was easy to find, the staff were very friendly, provided clear explanations, and helped with any issues. There were also sightseeing buses, which were nice but a bit pricey. Taking the boat tour and then walking around was both perfectly fine.

Pingjiang Road is one of my favorite places in Suzhou because it perfectly captures the charm of the city's old water town atmosphere. Walking along the stone-paved street beside the peaceful canal felt like stepping back in time. The traditional houses, small stone bridges, teahouses, and local snack stalls create a relaxing and authentic experience. I also enjoyed browsing the unique shops selling handmade souvenirs and stopping for a drink at one of the cozy cafés. It is a wonderful place to slow down, take beautiful photos, and experience Suzhou's rich culture. I highly recommend visiting Pingjiang Road for a leisurely afternoon stroll.
