New Harbor

7.8
4.6/5
412 reviews
New Harbor is a 17th-century canal district that retains its historic charm to this day. Colorful old townhouses and historic mansions line both sides of the canal, their vibrant facades reflecting on the water, creating a striking contrast in architectural styles. The north side is bustling with numerous bars and restaurants, making it perfect for casual gatherings, while the south side is relatively quiet. Both sides offer unique charm for photography. Several historic wooden ships are moored in the canal year-round and can be viewed up close. The fairy tale author Hans Christian Andersen once lived here, and a commemorative plaque in the district records this history. Taking a canal cruise from here is a classic way to experience the charm of the city's waterways. You can explore by walking along the canal or by taking a boat to admire the architecture from the water.Denmark · Copenhagen

Amalienborg Palace

4.5/5
256 reviews
Amalienborg is where the Danish royal family lives. During the reign of Christian VII in 1794, a fire broke out in Christiansborg, forcing the royal family to relocate to Amalienborg for refuge. Later, Frederick V decided to build it into a Rococo style building, so Amalienborg, which was originally four aristocratic mansions, became a magnificent palace. In honor of the king, an equestrian statue of Frederick V was built, which stands in the center of the Octagon at the Royal Palace. The four old buildings are the Palace of Christian VII built in 1754, which is now the reception hall of the royal family, the Palace of Christian VIII, the Palace of Christian IX completed in 1758, and the Philippine residence where Queen Ingrid lived. The Palace of Theresa VIII. Christian VIII's palace was officially opened in 1994, displaying objects used by the royal family until 1947. When the Queen of Denmark is in the palace, the national flag will be raised on the roof. At that time, you can know whether the Queen is in the palace in front of you. Maybe, she is quietly looking at the square with a telescope. Oh crowd. The Royal Band will depart from the palace at 11:30 in the morning and return to the palace after detouring around the old city, and will perform the changing of the guard ceremony on the square at 12:00. Don't miss out on such a special program.Denmark · Copenhagen

The Rosenborg Castle is a fairytale palace and one of Copenhagen's landmarks. It was purposely built in 1634 as the summer residence of Christian IV. It was designed in the Dutch Renaissance style, with bronze eaves and red brick walls being the main features. Before King Frederick IV completed Frederick Castle, three previous kings lived here. After 1883, it became the treasure house of successive kings, displaying many cultural relics such as decorations, gorgeous costumes, paintings and pottery. Here, you'll find opulent marble ceilings, priceless Dutch tapestries, lion statues cast in sterling silver, and utensils made of sterling gold. In addition, the Danish crown is also stored in the basement of the palace.Denmark · Copenhagen

The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid statue is located in the Long Beach Park in the northeast of Copenhagen, Denmark. It was cast by a Danish sculptor based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Daughter of the Sea". The bronze statue was completed in Long Beach Park in 1913 and has a history of more than 100 years. It is a world-famous bronze statue and a symbol of Copenhagen, so it attracts countless tourists. The statue of The Little Mermaid is only 1.5 meters high, which is equivalent to the height of a teenage child. From a distance, the mermaid with a fish tail is sitting on a huge rock, quiet and elegant, leisurely and contented. If you look closely, the mermaid is a sad girl. Visitors come here to observe the mermaid's facial features. This beautiful statue has been cut off by thieves many times, so the head of the little mermaid I see now is transplanted later, not the original. The local government was worried that the statue would be damaged by too many tourists, so in March 2006, the Little Mermaid statue was relocated to the deep sea. Now, in Changdi Park, you can only stand outside the seaside fence and watch the little mermaid in the sea. Mermaid statue, and took a group photo with it across the fence. It should be noted that there are many tourists outside the fence, so you need to pay attention to safety when taking pictures.Denmark · Copenhagen

The Copenhagen Canal, whose full name is Copenhagen Newport Canal, is an artificial canal, built between 1669 and 1673, which directs seawater into King's New Square. One of the houses built on both sides of the canal can still be seen, but the shore is now a pedestrian street with many restaurants in a suitable environment. You can take a seat in the lower hall of the cruise ship, or take a walk on the deck and enjoy the city views while cruising. The canal twists and turns through Copenhagen, and every turn offers views of the city's waterfront.Denmark · Copenhagen

Christiansborg Palace

The predecessor of the Christiansborg Palace was built at the end of the 11th century. It was originally the building of the Bishop of Asablon. Later, Christian VI, desirous of luxury and pleasure, demolished the old palace and rebuilt it, and built such a gorgeous, comfortable, and beautiful on the original site. The grand new palace, the Christiansborg Palace. Today's palace is no longer a mere king's house, but is used as a parliamentary place, also known as the Copenhagen Parliament Building. These include the Danish Courts, the Office of the Prime Minister of Denmark, and the Danish Parliament Building. In addition, the reception hall of the Danish Royal Palace is also located in it. To some extent, this palace symbolizes the supreme power of Denmark (executive power, judicial power and legislative power). The palace has survived to this day. In fact, it has suffered two fires, and then it has been continuously rebuilt and transformed, and it has become what it is now. Therefore, you will find it interesting to find that its styles are mixed and matched. The main part of the renovated palace in 1928 was in the neo-Baroque style, while the church part in 1826 retained the neo-classical style. The square in front of the palace was built around 1738 and has a strong Baroque style.Denmark · Copenhagen

Kronborg Palace, meaning "Palace of Crowns", is located in Helsingor, a fortress town north of Copenhagen, adjacent to the Sond Strait between Denmark and Sweden. Kronborg Palace is also known as Hamlet Castle because of the famous background of the famous play "Hamlet". In 2000 Kronborg Palace was listed as a World Heritage Site. The history of Kronborg Palace dates back to 1420, when King Frederick II of Denmark officially named it "Kronborg" in 1577. The palace is built of rock, and the brown copper roof is imposing and majestic. There is a monumental relief statue of Shakespeare on the wall of the outer courtyard of the palace. According to legend, Shakespeare wrote the immortal tragedy "Hamlet" in the background of Kronborg Palace. Every summer, a series of special Hamlet-themed events take place at Kronborg Palace. Those who are interested can join the "Hamlet"-themed guided tour starting at 12:30 noon every day, and the ticket price is 50 crowns. The interior of Kronborg Palace is now mainly open to the public as a museum, displaying a large number of antique furniture, oil paintings, tapestries, and wood carvings. The king and queen's two bedrooms are beautifully decorated and luxurious: the ornate doorway, the oil painting ceiling, the marble fireplace are all worth seeing. The ballroom in the palace is the largest banquet hall in northern Europe, with black and white marble floors, ornate crystal chandeliers, and paintings hanging on the surrounding walls dating back to the 17th century. The underground fortifications on the ground floor of the palace are also now open to the public, and the king's bedroom was once built with secret passages leading to it. During the war, it was used to secretly train soldiers and defend against foreign enemies. The underground fortifications house Kronborg's more popular statue - a bronze statue named "Holger the Dane", the legendary Danish hero dressed in military uniform and sleeping with his sword in hand. According to legend, he made great contributions during the war. Although there was no war in the future, he also kept a seated position when sleeping as a warning.Denmark · Helsingor
Gefion Fountain
No. 16 of Best Things to Do in Denmark

Gefion Fountain

5.3
4.2/5
160 reviews
Gefion Fountain is a large bronze fountain sculpture on the waterfront of Copenhagen's harbor. The sculpture captures a moment of strenuous plowing: four oxen with heads lowered and backs arched, muscles tense, pull the plow, while Gefion drives them from behind with a whip, their hooves seemingly churning the pool water. Water sprays from the oxen's nostrils and surges from behind the plow and wheels, enveloping the entire bronze group in mist and giving the static sculpture a sense of forward momentum. It is also often treated as a wishing fountain by tourists, and many people toss coins into the pool to make a wish. Winters in Denmark are cold, and the fountain is turned off during this time for frost protection. The sculpture itself is still worth seeing, but if you want to see the full effect of the mist and the oxen appearing to break through the water, it is better to visit during warmer seasons.Denmark · Copenhagen

Nyhavn, Denmark is a landmark attraction in Copenhagen. It is an artificial canal built between 1669 and 1673. The canal is lined with colorful townhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries, which are rich in color and form a unique landscape. Andersen once lived here and created many classic fairy tales, adding cultural heritage to it. You can stroll and take a boat tour here to experience the rich Nordic style and cozy atmosphere.

On the way to see the Little Mermaid, I happened to catch the changing of guards at the gate of Amalienborg. Since we couldn't enter, we just watched the changing of guards for a while. The soldiers marched in unison, and the unique ceremony looked quite interesting, attracting many tourists to stop and watch.

The park is the best part of the castle. It’s stunning with lots of trees and flowers. To enter the castle, you need to buy a ticket stick to time. So it’s best to book online first. It takes about 1h to see inside of the castle.

I visited the Little Mermaid statue in Denmark on a solo trip during winter. The cold breeze from the sea and the quiet atmosphere made the experience feel even more magical. The statue itself is smaller than I expected, but its delicate expression and connection to Andersen’s fairytale give it a unique charm. Since it was off-season, there weren’t many tourists, which allowed me to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. It’s a simple yet iconic landmark worth seeing at least once.
