The Kanas Scenic Area is located in the dense forests of Burqin County in the Altay region,It is one of the renowned scenic areas in Xinjiang. The renowned three bays in the attraction — Shenxian Bay, Moon Bay, and Wolong Bay — are must-see core views. Shenxian Bay is famous for its morning mist spectacle, Moon Bay features a graceful S-shaped curve, and Wolong Bay offers tranquil and serene waters. By this beautiful, fertile, and mysterious lake (the meaning of "Kanasi" in Mongolian), you can see the clear and tranquil water that often changes color with the seasons and weather. The lakeshore is surrounded by primeval forests of spruce, fir, and Siberian larch, while the sunny slopes are covered with dense grass. Distinct layers of different plant communities create a stunning display in fall, with golden yellow, crimson, and dark green hues each shining in their own way. When visiting the attraction, you can also climb the fish-watching platform with a relative height of 600 m, where you can overlook the lake and the distant layers of green mountains shrouded in mist as well as the snow-capped peaks. You can also take a cruise to enjoy the lake scenery. There are also many ancient legends here, the most famous being the "lake monster." Over the past few decades, numerous travelers and scientists have reported sightings of "giant strange fish." Some claim it to be a massive taimen (a type of fish), while others believe it to be a prehistoric creature. Stay To protect the natural environment here, the attraction closed many lakeside hotels. There are mountain villas within the attraction, as well as local Tuvan houses and tents available for stay. Many visitors also choose to stay on the outskirts of the attraction for easier access to the next day's tour. If you want to get up early to see the morning mist at Fairy Bay, staying within the attraction is a good choice. Diet The attraction is located in a remote border area with sparse population and high logistics costs. The food in the attraction is mainly halal, with more beef and mutton and fewer vegetables. Some visitors from inland areas may find it unaccustomed, so they can prepare some dry food and drinking water by themselves.Burqin · 98.2 km from downtown

Also known as the Colorful River Bank, located in the Irtysh River basin, the Rainbow Cliff was formed by natural effects, such as wind erosion, water erosion and leaching, and is a typical Yadan landform. The Rainbow Cliff is also special because of its brilliant colors and diverse shapes. Bright red, green, purple, yellow, brown and other colors appeared on the beach where there was almost nothing after thousands of years of wind erosion, rain and washing by river water.Burqin · 20.8 km from downtown

Birch Forest Area is a natural belt of birch forests stretching along both banks of the Hemu River in Hemu Scenic Area, and it is the highlight of the fall scenery in this Tuvan village. Cross the Hemu Bridge, and you will find vast stretches of birch forest on the opposite bank, with white trunks standing straight in rows. The forest trails are gentle, making it convenient for walking and taking photos. Every fall, the birch leaves turn from green to gold. Sunlight filters through the gaps in the trees, framing the snow-capped mountains, log cabins with pointed roofs, and the Hemu River together to create the iconic fall scene of Hemu. The mornings here have a unique charm, with morning mist often rising along the valley, winding through the treetops, and interweaving with the cooking smoke from the village. Against the light, the layers of the birch forest are distinct; strolling along the river, you can also see the reflection of the trees on the water. Exploring the village, crossing the bridge to walk through the forest, and then heading to the riverbank for photos is the classic route for visiting Hemu.Burqin · >100 km from downtown

Ahe Highway, connecting Altay City in Xinjiang with Hemu Village in Kanas Scenic Area, is an eco-tourism highway that integrates natural scenery and cultural heritage. Along the way, it connects several scenic spots such as Xiaodonggou National Forest Park, Wushilike Snow Park, and Tolehaitexia Ranch, forming a large tourism and transportation loop of "Altay City-Hemu Village-Burqin County-Altay City". This highway is designed with the concept of "road-scene integration" and has picturesque scenery along the way, and is known as the "Ice and Snow Landscape Avenue". Since its opening to traffic, Ahe Highway has implemented two-way traffic, greatly improving the convenience of tourists' travel. In order to ensure driving safety, several traffic meteorological stations have been newly built along the route to monitor meteorological elements such as temperature, wind speed, and precipitation in real time. In addition, there are several parking lots and service areas along the highway to facilitate tourists to rest and view the scenery. The completion of Ahe Highway has not only promoted the development of tourism in Altay, but also driven the economic growth of towns along the route, becoming a model of the integrated development of "transportation + tourism + culture" in the local area.Burqin · 93.9 km from downtown

Moon Bay

Moon Bay is a river bend on the Kanas River, known along with Fairy Bay and Wolong Bay as the "Three Bays" along the Kanas River. The river channel winds here following the mountain terrain, curving into a crescent moon, hence the name. Influenced by riverbed elevation differences, water volume, and changes in light, the water color presents varying blue-green tones; on sunny days, it is often a transparent emerald green, making it a classic spot for Kanas landscape photography. It is nestled between the eastern and western mountains, with a water surface as calm as a mirror. Inside the upper and lower river bends, there are two small sandbars that look like footprints. On both sides, peaks rise one after another, and dense primeval forests cover the area. The peninsula-like platforms beneath the forest are covered with stretches of green lawn. Standing on the lateral moraine platform to look down, the full view of the river bend is unobstructed, making it a classic spot for sightseeing and photography; you can also take the riverside boardwalk from here to Wolong Bay to descend into the river valley, get closer to see the sandbars, and experience the tranquility of this bend of blue water from a different angle.Burqin · >100 km from downtown

Hemu Viewing Platform

105 reviews
Hemu Viewing Platform is located on the hillside across the Hemu River from Hemu Village and is the highest vantage point for overlooking the panoramic view of this Tuvan village. Starting from the village, cross the wooden bridge over the river, walk through the birch forest, and ascend the wooden boardwalk. The path is lined with trees, and visitors can also choose to ride a horse up the mountain. The platform connects to Hemu Bridge at one end and Yuanjiang Bridge at the other, allowing visitors to take different bridges up and down to form a small loop without backtracking. Standing on the platform, the entire village is in full view. Pointed-roof wooden houses are scattered along both banks of the valley, the Hemu River winds through the village, and the surrounding slopes are covered with birch forests. On clear days, you can even see snow-capped mountains in the distance. Early morning is the golden hour here; morning mist slowly rises from the valley, wisps of cooking smoke curl from the wooden rooftops, and the first rays of sunlight illuminate the snow-capped peaks before spreading inch by inch across the village and the birch forest. After fall arrives, the birch forest turns golden, and the village scenery is painted in layers of color; after snow, it becomes a quiet, silver-white world, with something to see in every season.Burqin · >100 km from downtown

Wolong Bay

Wolong Bay is one of the "Three Bays" formed by the Kanas River after it flows out of Xinjiang Kanas Lake. Along with Fairy Bay and Moon Bay, it is a classic scenic spot in the river valley, and locals call it Kazan Lake. A sandbar has formed here that resembles a coiled dragon. Viewed from above, it looks like a dragon lying quietly in the clear water, frolicking leisurely. When the Kanas River flows here, the river surface suddenly widens and the current slows down. The water in the bay is as calm as a mirror and shimmers on sunny days. However, at the inlet, giant rocks stand in the middle of the stream, causing waves to crash against them and sending water droplets flying. A wooden bridge spans the outlet. Standing on the bridge and looking north, you see the mirror-like bay, while looking south, you see the roaring Kanas River. The contrast between stillness and motion is right before your eyes. The surrounding forests are dense, and the small island in the middle of the river is lush and green. In the fall, the mountain forests turn golden, reflecting on the blue-green water.Burqin · >100 km from downtown

🌈Northern Xinjiang Grand Loop, Stop 4: Kanas 🌈Beauty: Photos simply aren't enough to capture the breathtaking scenery. It's arguably the most beautiful scenic area in Northern Xinjiang, and perhaps the most representative natural landscape of the entire region. I'm not sure if it's the only one, but I think it is. 🌈Fish Viewing Platform: A must-see. There's a long queue at the visitor center for the shuttle bus; this is the most popular spot. There are 1068 steps to reach the platform, offering a panoramic view of Kanas. The turquoise lake stretches out before you, dotted with azure sky and golden primeval forests—truly stunning. 🌈Kanas Three Bays: The day before, I took a shuttle bus from Jiadengyu to the new village to check in. My mistake was bringing my suitcase. Fortunately, I could transfer my luggage at the visitor center the next day; otherwise, hiking through the Three Bays would have been quite arduous. Retrieving my luggage from the exit of the scenic area to Jiadengyu was also convenient—the design was very reasonable. Also, when hiking through the Three Bays, pay attention to the order. Hiking from the visitor center towards Jiadengyu is easier and involves less climbing. The entire hike was very comfortable, with beautiful scenery along the way. The most iconic attraction, in my opinion, is Moon Bay. It's a popular spot for photos and social media check-ins; it's the view featured on the cover of our Chinese textbooks and is also very popular on Douyin (TikTok). One thing to note: the restrooms near the shuttle bus stop on the third bay back to Jiadengyu are extremely small. Men have to queue, and the queues for women are even longer. It's best to find a place to relieve yourself beforehand, otherwise it can be quite uncomfortable. 🌈Summary: Kanas is absolutely stunning! We all agree that this is the most beautiful spot. There's a unique shade of green called "Kanas Green"—highly recommended!

The village nestled at the foot of the snow-capped mountains, though somewhat commercialized, now boasts hiking trails that take about four hours round trip, offering an immersive experience of Hemu's beauty! With the snow-capped mountains so close, the off-season makes for fewer crowds and stunning scenery! I highly recommend the viewing platform and hiking trails; you absolutely must experience both.

The scenic area is small, not far from Burqin County. It features typical cliff-style Yardang landforms, with rock layers displaying vibrant colors of red, yellow, purple, and green due to varying mineral composition. On the opposite bank are a river valley oasis and poplar forests. At sunset in October, the combination of the sunset and the golden poplar forests on the opposite bank creates an exceptionally high saturation of colors.

The waters of Kanas Lake change colors with the light and shadow, surrounded by pristine taiga forests, possessing both beauty and mystery. The Fish Viewing Platform offers the best panoramic view. The scenic area is quite extensive, and shuttle buses often have long wait times during peak season.

The birch forest in Hemu Village is a forest on a slope. In summer, the birch trees are lush and green. Although they are not as colorful as in autumn, they are also full of vitality. The birch forest can be reached by bus. If you want to walk into the forest, you still need to climb the slope. I hope to have the opportunity to come back in autumn to appreciate it.

Jiadengyu in Altay is a necessary stop on the way to Kanas, Hemu, and Baihaba, attracting many tourists who only stay briefly before leaving. However, they often overlook the unique charm and allure of Jiadengyu itself. - ✅【The Past of Jiadengyu】 The name Jiadengyu comes from a legendary mysterious hunter named Jiadeng. He was a highly skilled hunter with a kind heart, often helping impoverished herders. In a battle with a pack of wolves, he was tragically killed by one of his own tamed male wolves. To express their gratitude and remembrance, people named the mountain valley where he lived "Jiadengyu" 🏔 - ✅【The Present Life of Jiadengyu】 Jiadengyu is the gateway to Kanas ⛩️, a transportation hub to the Kanas Lake scenic area 🚌, and also the main base for tourism reception and management in Kanas 👭. It's a green forest town integrating dining, accommodation, and RV camping facilities. - ✅【Jiadengyu Scenic Spot】 Jiadengyu is also a very important national forest park. Although it's not as stunningly beautiful as Kanas, it fully showcases the classic scenery of northern Xinjiang! In Jiadengyu, you can see lush forests, vast grasslands, rolling mountains, and blue skies, white clouds, forests, and grasslands intertwined. Yurts and Mongolian yurts are scattered throughout, creating a breathtaking picture.

Hemu Viewing Platform, also known as Haden Viewing Platform or Genghis Khan's Command Post, is located in Hemu Village, Burqin County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang. It is the highest point in the village, offering panoramic views. It's an excellent spot for watching the sunrise and morning mist, and also great for astrophotography. From Hemu Bridge, it takes about 20-40 minutes to walk to the top along the boardwalk, or you can choose to ride a horse or a horse-drawn sleigh. Legend has it that Genghis Khan once reviewed his 100,000-strong army here, adding to the historical and cultural significance of the viewing platform.

The small island in the middle resembles a dinosaur 🦖, hence the name Wolong Bay (Sleeping Dragon Bay). In autumn, the scenery of Kanas is breathtaking, with ceilings seemingly endless. It's recommended to hike down to the riverbank for an even better view. Especially towards the moon-shaped path, the scenery is stunning all the way.
