Suzhou University is one of the first universities included in China's "211 Project" and a "Double First-Class" university jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government.
The 985 Project refers to the initiative to build world-class universities and high-level universities (named after the speech given by then-President Jiang Zemin on May 4, 1998, at the centennial celebration of Peking University).
The 211 Project was proposed and launched in 1995. It is a Chinese government initiative to develop approximately 100 higher education institutions and a group of key disciplines as priority projects for the 21st century. 211 universities refer to those selected for inclusion in the national 211 Project.
Currently, there are 39 Project 985 universities and 116 Project 211 universities.
