Joshua Tree National Park is a national park just a short drive from Los Angeles, approximately 120 miles away—a mere two-hour drive. The park gets its name from the Joshua tree, a large yucca plant found only in the southwestern United States and a signature plant of the Mojave Desert. The park is vast, nearly the size of Rhode Island, but a day trip from LA is plenty if you just want to explore.
