Reviews: From Quito: Cotopaxi Volcano and Limpiopungo Lagoon Tour

Okay, except that when we got on, one guide was supposed to go ahead and another behind the whole group, and the second one went ahead of the first because they were going to give a girl her engagement ring, and she preferred to be in the photos rather than take care of the group. If I had felt sick, they wouldn't have even noticed. Fortunately, everything was fine. Otherwise, the tour was great!

We were beyond thrilled to discover that Irene would be our guide again for our second tour with the Quito Tour Bus company—this time to hike Cotopaxi! After having such a wonderful experience with her before, we knew we were in for another unforgettable adventure, and she exceeded our expectations once again. Pickup was bright and early, this time with a full bus of eager hikers. As we drove along the Pan-American Highway, Irene kept the atmosphere lively and friendly, encouraging us to get to know each other. We stopped for breakfast and grabbed some extra snacks, as Irene reminded us that Cotopaxi’s high altitude can be challenging and to be mindful of potential altitude sickness. Her care and preparation gave us the confidence to take on the day. The drive itself was breathtaking—through mountains and into the clouds—before stopping at the visitor center. There we learned about the two hiking routes, the fascinating history of Cotopaxi, and even the latest safety updates since it remains an active volcano. Irene then gathered us for some traditional coca tea to help with the altitude, with options of candy or coca leaves for those who don’t drink tea. Before starting the hike, we paused for amazing photos of Cotopaxi in all its glory, with the base camp near the ice cap—our destination—in sight. Some hikers chose the steeper “heartbreaker path,” while most of us, myself included, took the zigzag route. Irene, as always, made sure everyone was safe and supported. When I struggled near the back, she encouraged me every step of the way, literally through high winds and snow. Her patience and positivity kept me going until I proudly reached the top with the group. At the base camp, we celebrated with photos, enjoyed the views, took quick breaks, and even browsed the small gift and snack shop. Some of the fitter hikers (my husband included) pushed a little higher while time allowed, and then we all began our descent—which was easier but still a great workout! Back on the bus, we made a scenic stop at Laguna de Limpiopungo, snapping more photos (and even getting hailed on!) before continuing on. To our delight, we even spotted a wild deer along the way. By the time we arrived at a beautiful restaurant for lunch, many of us had napped from exhaustion. Thanks to Irene’s organization, our pre-ordered meals were ready, and we were able to relax, enjoy the mountain views, and watch the animals on the property—ducks, chickens, llamas, and even a calf. It was the perfect ending before grabbing a few souvenirs and heading back. We did part ways with a few of our fellow hikers here as they connected to additional tours, but the day as a whole was nothing short of magical. Irene once again proved to be the heart of the trip—knowledgeable, attentive, encouraging, and truly invested in making sure everyone had an unforgettable experience. If you’re planning to hike Cotopaxi, do it with the Quito Tour Bus company—and cross your fingers you get Irene as your guide. She is simply the best!
Reviews: From Quito: Full Day Cotopaxi and Quilotoa

This is a great tour for the whole day. It was quite cloudy, so we didn´t get view of the entire Cotopaxi, but the weather cannot be controlled. We could see the rest of the places. We received a lot of information about Ecuador, Quito and the sightseeings.
Reviews: Full-Day Cotopaxi National Park Horseback Ride hike for Beginners

Kathy was likely the best tour guide we have ever encountered. She was a wealth of knowledge of Ecuador and was incredibly kind. She had us laughing and smiling nearly the entire trip. She happily answered countless questions about the culture and history of Ecuador and provided interesting additional information as well. But where she really shined in my opinion was on the hike to base camp at Cotopaxi. She handled my labored breathing in an excellent manor and was very patient. Especially for someone that has summited many of the volcanoes in Ecuador and could do it at ease. She gave the encouragement for me to continue on in a perfect manner giving time for rests. It is my belief she truly does whatever she can to make sure the folks on her tour are genuinely happy. She will go to any length in order to do so. Kathy was such a kind and wonderful person. My favorite activity of the day was the horseback riding led by Johnny at Cotopaxi National Park (arranged by Kathy). He was an amazing guide, good communicator, very friendly, and let us do some fun things with the horses. He seemed to be a true Cowboy and we very much enjoyed his guiding. The scenery on the horseback ride is absolutely breathtaking. I felt so relaxed and at peace during our ride. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I loved every minute of it. We loved our tour with Kathy so much (largely due to her great personality and knowledge, but also due to the activities she had planned) that we intend to return to Ecuador someday and will definitely seek her services again. Kathy, and this tour get our highest recommendation. The sights are top notch and you couldn’t ask for a better guide!

The tour guide was knowledgeable so that was great. However, it was not worth $65. The ticket itself costs $9 roundtrip, and transportation would’ve been $4 each way for Uber. The nice part was that the tour group was small. 3 of us in the tour guide’s personal car.
