I can’t believe it actually took me 17 visits to Vilnius before I finally decided to not be lazy and check out the cathedral bell tower in the middle of Vilnius. For the past two decades this tower was where I’d meet my dates because of its prime central location. I was in for a surprise. The 6 euro entry fee is negligible and definitely worth the fee once you climb up to the summit for spectacular views of all four cardinal points of the city proper. The bell ringing every 15 minutes is not necessarily as bad as it sounds as I found it tolerable even as I was mere metres from the bells. I took note of its long historical past and wondered to myself about how if the walls could talk they would tell me about the Teutonic Knights, the Russian Empire followed by the Nazis and then eventually Soviet rule. The bells now toll for a young and free Lithuanian Republic that is full of trendy hipsters. You may not recognize the tower from the outside but it definitely rings a bell.
