São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress
The São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress, nestled on the northern coast of Santa Catarina Island in southern Brazil, is a remnant of colonial defenses. Construction began in 1740 under the plans of Portuguese officers. It was intended, along with other forts on the island, to form a triangular defense system for the North Bay, protecting it from Spanish and other threats.
